The EVO Plus results are definitely not spectacular on the Write side, I should've purchased the Pro. Can anyone post the AmorphousDiskMark results with their Pro? Here are mines, I hope the Writes are as bad for Pro also.

You should check the EVO Plus FIRMWARE REVISION in "About This Mac / NVME
It SHOULD be 2B2QEXM7.

If you see 1B2QEXM7 then you will probably have problems with the blade in the future.
Boot into Windows and run Samsung Magician ( the blade must be Windows formatted I think )

I don't have the IOCREST card . . but definitely will get one in the future.
My 500gb 970 EVO Plus is in PCIe slot 2 ( I have a 250gb 970 EVO in slot 4 ).

Please have a look at Post #1

The main differences in the Samsung 970 EVO - 970 EVO Plus - 970 Pro range is CACHE and how speed drops as CACHE fills. The blade size is also a factor speed-wise. 250gb blade will read/write slower than for example a 1TB blade.

The 970 PRO is the definite winner, just keeps on going but the 970 EVO Plus comes close as it has been optimised.

IMPORTANT NOTE
For new purchasers of Samsung 970 EVO Plus blades; You should definitely check the NVME Firmware revision BEFORE formatting in Mac OS.
The shop where you bought the blade may have supplied you with an older, first release blade which will have the 1B2QEXM7 revision which was reported to cause kernel panics.

Is a 5,1, what do you mean real.

a 4,1 flashed to 5.1 > SMC 1.39f5

or a real 5.1 > SMC 1.39f11

you can see this in the system profiler

i ask because it occurred to me that in a 4.1
less space above the CPU tray than in a real 5.1

but I still can't see why that is the case

Thanks for the tip, I did not know I can check the NVME firmware there, I believe it even shows into above screenshot. My drive has the manufacturing date of 2019/11/28. I believe the new firmware was released on September 2018, so all new drives should be loaded with it? That is why I did not bother performing the check. I read about it, but I believe the kernel panic is related to several brands, not just Samsung.

I’m interested into 970 EVO Pro write results, can anyone post the stats on a Syba?

Click NVMEexpress to see your 970 EVO Plus firmware / revision.

Although the latest firmware has been released, that doesn't mean that it was installed to the batch of 970 EVO Plus blades in which your blade was shipped to the seller from which you purchased yours.

I bought my " NEW " 970 EVO Plus LAST WEEK ( Jan 16th. 2020 ) . .the firmware was the original problematic release version = 1B2QEXM7.

NOW . . . . it is 2B2QEXM7.

I highly doubt that 970 EVO Plus sellers check the firmware revisions.

You could consider the HighPoint SSD7101A-1; for me it gives better results

. . . . . yes, the Highpoint is very nice indeed . . . and more than double the price of the Syba I/O Crest SI-PEX40129. I think it depends on one's needs.

Alibaba is selling the Syba for around US$150 last time I looked and about US$209 on Amazon.

Latest, I did not have to upgrade it.

I paid mines $162.61 shipped to my door, on Amazon. You can find sometimes decent prices on Amazon, that is why I purchased mines recently along with the 970 EVO Plus. I like that it adds bifurcation support into a non-bifurcation motherboard.

I finally got Samsung Magician working . . . had to install Windows 10.
It's GUI layout is very different to the version I had installed in Win7

In my case, the fans were definitely touching, making a loud raspy noise. The spacer was just the perfect height to clear the fans contact.

FWIW... that foam will not do much for airflow on your video card. it's like blocking the air filter and radiator on your car by 90% while expecting the engine to perform correctly and last to it's expected lifetime.

I’m not using the card intensively, the fans almost never kick in. I was actually checking this, to make sure there are no airflow issues. The little round spacer is 1/2 inch in diameter and thick enough to eliminate contact.

I'm having a real nightmare with my 2TB 970 Evo Plus NVMe.

I have a 2009 4,1 upgraded to 5,1 and have Mojave running on a 2.5" SSD on a Sonnet PCIe card. I'm trying to clone the OS to the new NVMe, but the process keeps crashing the computer.

Originally I formatted the NVMe as Mac OS journaled, but now after some failures to clone to it, it only gives me the APFS options.

I've done a bit of reading and I can see that:
• My Boot ROM version is: 144.0.0.0.0
• Mojave is build 18G3020
• The NVMe revision is 2B2QEXM7

So it would appear I have all the right specs, but it just fails to clone.

In my PCIe slots
• Top slot (slot 4?): An eSATA card as I have a HDD caddy to quickly insert drives like Time Machine.
• Slot 3: Sonnet Tempo Card with two 1TB Samsung 2.5" SSDs on it
• Slot 2: I/O CREST SI-PEX40129
• Slot 1: Sapphire Pulse Radeon RX 580 8G GDDR5

The fans on my GPU DO hit the NVMe caddy above it so I like others have a spacer in there (lollipop stick with insulation tape!).

I really need to use all these slots and it is my work computer.

This NVMe problem is holding up my photography work and I am at my wits end after jumping through numerous hoops yesterday trying to upgrade from El Capitan and all sorts of obstacles presenting themselves to me. I'm hoping this is the final hurdle, but I don't know how to solve this issue.

I would be so appreciative if someone were able to help me figure this problem out. I really need to use the computer for work in the next 24hrs so this is pretty urgent to me.

I assume that you are using Carbon Copy Cloner. True ?

If true, which version ?

( I have a 500gb HFs+ formatted Samsung 970 EVO Plus nad have had no problems cloning FROM an APFS formttd SSD to the HFS+ 970 EVO Plus ) with " CCC's Safety Net " set to OFF. )

NOTE : After this type of CCC cloning CCC gives me a " Cloned but there were errors. . yet .. the error is that ONE file could not be cloned . . BUT .. the cloned drive works perfectly, has been for months.

I was going to use carbon copy cloner, but as I've just updated from El Capitan to Mojave I'd need to buy the newer version so it is compatible. I found out that you can use disk utility instead, so that is what I was using to do the clone.

Carbon Copy Cloner is worth every penny of the purchase price.

Try cloning with CCC to a spare SSD with "Safety Net " set to "OFF".

You should be able to boot from it.

I'd forgotten that you can get the trial of CCC (5.1.15). So I downloaded it and started the clone process with safety net turned off. It got 32GB in and then the computer shut down just like all the other times :-(

Any other suggestions?

I've already had a dispute with the seller of the NVMe stick as the delivery was delayed. They had left the package in their shipping area and it hadn't gone out, so I had waited a month and they gave me a £50 gesture to say sorry. So if I had to return it or swap it it would just complicate things more and add additional waiting around for a new drive. Not really something I want to have to do.

Perhaps you need to re-install Mojave to a spare drive formatted to APFS.

if you have another Mac OS such as High Sierra or El Capitan or on a spare ssd/hdd or a MacBook Pro or MacBook you can use the download link below to download Mojave via the App Store and then

You can download the FULL Mojave 10.14.6 installer here in the App store HERE

Download FULL Mojave from the App store.jpg

Doing this FULL 6.05 gb Mojave 10.14.6 install is the best possible way to install.

Don't do any COMBO installs.

I think you could be right here. I have been cloning from Mac OS Journaled, and am I right in saying that NVMe sticks prefer APFS? Maybe they go wrong if you try and use Mac OS Journaled?

I am already running Mojave with all my programs on a 2.5" SSD in a PCIe slot.

OK so I can't clone, I'd have to do a fresh install to the NVMe stick in APFS and reload my programs one by one, is that what you are suggesting?

1. Mojave can ONLY be initially installed to an APFS formatted volume.

2. Unfortunately, re-installing ALL of your usually used programs is the best way to end up with a
trouble-free installation.

3. Create a folder on a spare SSD/HDD to save the FULL 6.05 gb Mojave 10.14.6 installer.

Mojave FULL 6.05 installation + Security Update
Create an APFS BACKUP drive.

4.
You can download the FULL Mojave 10.14.6 installer here in the App store HERE
https://apps.apple.com/us/app/macos-mojave/id1398502828?mt=12
I would recommend doing the first install to a spare APFS volume ( non-ssd drives can be
formatted to APFS but will be slower that's all

4.1 Then download and install the latest 18G3020 build Security Upgrade Build to this drive -
this drive can be your new Mojave APFS backup.

4.2 Apple Mojave Security Updates can ONLY be installed to an APFS formatted Mojave installation.

5. Install your usual programs to the above drive & test the install.

==========================================

6. Now you can CCC clone this APSF Mojave ( build 10G3020 ) BACKUP drive to your Samsung M.2 blade.
the CLONE can be formatted to either HFS+ or APFS ( I use HFS+ for my 970 EVO Plus - works well. )

Now you should have a working M.2 blade with Mojave, you should use either TIME Mmachine or . .. much better buy Carbon Copy Cloner and set to to back up your Samsung to the above BACKUP drive once a week or whatever suits you.

As it turns out the 2.5" SSD boot drive I have is APFS. I hadn't realised. My other identical 2.5" SSD is just used as a storage drive and that IS Mac OS Journaled.

The 2.5" SSD I am currently booting from already has Mojave and the latest update 18G3020.

So although I think your advice is good, it looks like I have already been down this route and it still isn't working.

Unless you think despite all this, a clean install might work even though the OS version and build is the same.
