Just asking... Can Windows see the TB3 card on a cMP if you start it with VMWare ?
No, Windows is running over a virtual machine and Windows don't have direct access to the hardware. But that gave me an idea, maybe we could run KVM as a host for Windows and macOS, some people here does that… The problem is the complexity, this will be even more complicated to do the initial configuration.

Some things have a 5% hit, others 15%, depends what you are doing. This need to be tested/benchmarked.

5% is ok 15% not so much.

I fly-read over a install guide about 2 months ago, its quite some setup.
If I undestood it right we can run VMs simultaneously.
For a KVM setup a 12 core is probably a better choice.

KVM installs are complex and need fine-tuning, but it's a one time thing.

I got time and patience, as well as experience cracking these kind of nuts.

Yes, but you can't pass-thru the PCIe device directly to more than one VM, my initial idea is that KVM boots Windows and macOS, do the TB initialisation, then you shutdown Windows.

KVM as a hypervisor is useful to boot previous macOS versions too.

Probably.

I got one 5.1 6Core and a 4.1 8core, which is about to being upgraded.

Quick change of topic,

In the mac user group on FB, they warn from upgrading to the last FirmWare, because the firmware is said to corrupt the EFI.

Before firmware was also corrupted, but I think it was you which said its the Windows installer.

Up until which Firmware is no there corruption issue ?

142.0.0.0.0 "bricks" (don't work until you change the Xeon to one that works) with all single CPU Mac Pros that still have the original W3xxx Xeons. Read the first post of MP5,1: BootROM thread | beta 142.0.0.0.0 "bricks" with W3xxx Xeons thread.

Windows EFI really bricked a lot of Macs with MP51.0087.B00 and could brick more in the future. Mac Pro 5,1 is not Windows EFI compatible and you should not install it even that some people got it working. Apple never certified it and Microsoft is doing nasty things with the NVRAM, so you should not use Windows installed via EFI.

Damn i just got a SLBV mounted (W3680 3.33) and a Titan on the way.
Im still using 10.12.6, because compatibility reasons, its just safer to stay there with my software.

I think on both macs is the MP51.0084.B00 FW.

I wont =)

So far i never istalled above W7, so that question never arised.
As far as i got it, its not possible to initialize Titan Ridge with W7,
and really i hope its clear how to choose a non EFI install when installing. Is it the Partition type ?

Thanks a lot for the help =)

You should upgrade to current BootROMs, even if you keep 10.12.6, anything before MP51.0089.B00 is not Spectre/Meltdown safe.

Installs made from DVD when you do not select the EFI icon from the BootPicker are always CSM.

Sorry if its been asked but what about group marketing Gigabyte themselves to produce a MacOS driver for the TITAN RIDGE card. With all the R&D that has already been done by everyone here it may be worth a shot. It would surely increase their sales.

Hi there,

I highly doubt they would venture in delivering driver for mac os for legal issue.

and in a few month we will see what the new macpro is about... if it is still a stupid thing , I would probably launch a kick starter to do an adaptable custom mobo to go in the cheesegratter chassis with the exact hardware that is in the imac pro but with pcie slot.

with respects to the TB/USB-C ports, do they play the same role as any other MacBook Pro 2016+ ??

Do the ports do/act BOTH USB & TB??

Don't inject anything from recent Macs into MP5,1 firmware. I injected the rMBP'18 NVMe EFI module into the BootROM and bricked my MP5,1. Apple is compiling EFI modules with optimizations and instructions that do not work in a MP51. If you want to check, use rEFInd.

Just curious, did you ever recover from your brick? New motherboard or solder on a new ROM chip? I've read on these forums that you do some pretty amazing stuff. I would love to learn how you guys are dumping the firmware and reverting after testing updates. Message me some links to read up on if you get a chance.

That is a genius idea and I'd buy one. Then we could get another nine years of solid use out of it. 4 PCIe slots is a limitation but with multiple TB ports that would allow enough bandwidth for expansion chassis. I really love the cMP design and how easy it is to upgrade and modify. It's a timeless classic and a relic of a time when Apple put out a product that justified the expense.

OK, I've been lurking long enough. Time to join in.

I'm interested in adding Thunderbolt to my 2009 Mac Pro because I've lost my audio interface in my studio because of lack of support from Avid in the latest OS updates. I have to upgrade something, and adding Thunderbolt to the my CheeseGrater would be nice. I think I'm ready to dive in.

We currently use Thunderbolt at work in our Protocol Analyzer. We've hired a contractor to write a streaming Thunderbolt drive for Win10. We actually buy the AKiTiO Node Lite chassis and rip out the TB card for use in our own system. I'm going to start pinging him to see if he has any ideas on how to make Thunderbolt work under MacOS and what might be done.

Thunderbolt works now, my Thunderbolt 3 audio interface runs.
The only thing missing would be two scripts, one in Windows, which at startup, changes the boot volume to Mac and a automator script which sets the boot volume back to Windows.
Then it would be perfect (as long as there is no hack for the titan ridge)
I don't know Windows at all so I have no clue how to make such a script.
I probably can make one for OSX.

The boot disk panel in windows is also working with High Sierra on a NVME.
we have to trick out the installer. My Thunderbolt 3 audio interface runs.

Okay, due to my laziness in the last couple of weeks/months, I finally installed Pixlas Mod Power cable.
I out in my USB stick before I booted up, but now nothing happens. It recognizes the card, but no stick visible. I then tried to charge my iPad Pro 12,9" 2018 and guess what, it is charging. But iTunes does not recognize it. Of course expected, because I still sis not installed windows over bootcamp. Thats now my next step. So far I am happy with the progress my little beast made. ✌

USB sticks working over USB 2.0 won't work. And yes, for the iPad to be recognised by iTunes you'd need the Windows initialisation
