Wow
And that works persistently ?

Really helpful would be ?
1. If you could let us know, how you boot back in to MacOs.
2. Which Ubuntu and which version you used.
3. if you had to install TB3 Drivers or not, and if yes which one(s).
That would be really, really, really, really, helpful ?

Im curious too, and found some info.

Thunderbolt Ubuntu 19.04

How To Install "thunderbolt-tools" Package on Ubuntu

Thunderbolt 3 Software Connection Manager Support Coming In Linux 5.5 For Apple Hardware

PDF guide and patches for making Linux v5.3 kernel to work with Thunderbolt 3 add-in card.

Github/linux/drivers/thunderbolt/

Only thing is, with Linux, if you have to install, it can get tricky if you don't know.
At least it used to be the way some years ago.

Would be cool, but I guess, as TSIAlex stated many times, its not that easy.
Possibly this Link from above Thunderbolt 3 Software Connection Manager Support Coming In Linux 5.5 For Apple Hardware could help to find out more.

Same here.
There is, Refind, Gurb, flag the boot disk in the Urbuntu terminal.
I have no idea which one works.

Interesting will be if it is possible to automate the restart to MacOS in Ubuntu,
don't even need to see anything :)

That's why so many people had a problem !
Most likely I have a "23".
There was only some problem getting bootcamp to work.
Even though I installed in Legacy mode my 5.1 EFIi died. I have found out about several reasons that can happen, Installing: in UEFI mode, by USB Stick in Legacy mode, worn EFI Chip, failed Firmware updates. And I suspect, but do not know at all, if Windows has internet access.

Definitely better to use Ubuntu.

I would, unfortunately I don't have the knowledge.

Cheers
So, is this now working for you foojitsu1?
Works perfectly

Yes. I default "cold boot" (power button) into Ubuntu, restart "warm boot" (with option key) into Catalina.

Really helpful would be ?
1. If you could let us know, how you boot back in to MacOs.
same as above
2. Which Ubuntu and which version you used.
Ubuntu 18.04.4 LTS (ubuntu about.png attached)
3. if you had to install TB3 Drivers or not, and if yes which one(s).
No drivers loaded. showed up automatically, just had to authorize. (ubuntu tb3 info.png attached)
That would be really, really, really, really, helpful ?

I did not load any drivers as my original intention for installing ubuntu was for firmware flashing purposes only. As I stated before, all hardware automatically showed up after first boot. The only problem I've experienced (still an issue) is bluetooth issues with Mac keyboard and trackpad not connecting in ubuntu and disconnecting when I boot back to macOS. I ended up disabling bluetooth connections for both in ubuntu and have a usb mouse I connect to reboot.

@foojitsu1

after i have a Ubuntu USB stick, can i brick something by use the EFI Boot ?
WIN 10 on USB and booting from USB to install WIN 10 do some trash.
I started with usb stick but found out it was in "trial" mode as it wasn't saving any settings or program installs. I ended up installing on dedicated ssd (for now) and figured originally I can just remove if any hw conflicts arise. To be quite honest, I didn't give much thought and not really well versed in how to set up or best method. I'm trying to get y'all up to speed so I can take a break from troubleshooting! haha

NOTE: I will be traveling for work this week [probably the "adult" thing to do :)] so sorry in advance for any delayed responses.

Do you hook onto the blue or the green chip? Blue, no?
BLUE only (sorry already responded earlier)

Perhaps that warning is too harsh. We had one report, but its veracity has been questioned. The OpenCore guide also mentions how the configuration it proposes is safe. Nevertheless, the cMP has a fragile BootROM, and it is important to keep this in mind for everything.

I must admit that didn't expect this type of disquietude from a thread that is on the bleeding edge of cMP updates...
Curious and a bit off topic-
I used dosdude1 patch to install Catalina. is this something different? better?

ups...now works.
But after i do the restart i must hold the alt key.otherwise ubuntu restart and i get a error message
same on my system, I cold boot into ubuntu and have to hold alt/option key on restart or it will default back to ubuntu. I don't receive any error message though, can you send screenshot?

did you NVRAM reset? I had to every time I swapped drives/hardware until everything settled.

With linux there must be options to automate it, and there must be some way to choose osx as boot volume, a script which triggers a terminal command.

dammn....I don't understand why the Thunderbolt driver works for UBUNTU. The Windows driver does too. Only not with our Mac. It must be possible to adapt the Ubuntu Thunderbolt driver to our Mac OS. The programming language is almost identical. Apple wrote something in the driver that only works with full-fledged Thunderbolt computers. It should be feasible to find this entry right?

I'm confident someone will figure it out!! I'm just grateful it works as is (for now)

So just received a knock on the door and low-and-behold...yet another "virgin 23" GC-Titan Ridge!! I went from no cards on Friday to 2-too-many as of this morning!! wtf and lmao!!

I must have ordered another card in one of my "weaker moments" last week! :)
IMG_4076.jpg

EDITED: disregard original post, thought C card was causing slower booting of UAD panel but just checked and performance for all 3 cards match. Takes 25 sec for UAD panel to connect, 5-10 sec UAD Meter & Control Panel (in case anyone's interested)

Yes, this is different, and it comes with many advantages for the cMP: unpatched installations of Catalina, native updates, boot screen (basic boot picker and single-user mode) for standard graphics cards, hardware acceleration (including DRM in Safari), and protection from UEFI Windows.

Very Interesting. Thanks for the details. May have to try in the near future...

To add an update for "43" titan ridge cards in Ubuntu/Linux: It acts the same as Windows without the regedit fix.

That is to say, it recognises the devices through the Thunderbolt manager window (in my case I am using an Elgato Thunderbolt 3 dock and a Blackmagic Ultrastudio 4k). I can authorize them. However, authorizing them doesn't do anything.

It won't mount any drive I connect through the dock. Using the blackmagic desktop video software it won't recognise the ultrastudio, either.

Rebooting into OS X yields the same results.

While awaiting my programmer I will do a few more tests and see if I can do anything interesting.

Somehow I have the feeling that Apple has coded something in the Thunderbolt driver, which detects whether it is a Mac that is authorized to operate Thunderbolt, somehow it recognizes the year the computer was built and allows the driver to be activated. It would be interesting to see what happens if you would know how to touch the operating system that it is a current Mac Pro.
Maybe a patch (like Dosdude) or on the Mac firmware.

MP5,1 firmware don't enumerate Thunderbolt devices, it completely ignores it.

Apple Thunderbolt driver has nothing to with it.

DSM2 is the guy behind this work.

Like I understood he made a custom firmware and flashed it to the Titan Ridge.

No sorry. It may have modified efi boot on MacOS if you installed Ubuntu via EFI vs legacy-bios?

maybe someone else has a better understanding and possible solution?

found this possible solution to delete Ubuntu file within Mac EFI partition. I’d probably wait though to see if someone with better knowledge can confirm?

Safest solution for now would be to fresh install of MacOS. I’d consider keeping Ubuntu handy until you get programming hardware and successfully flash “23”. It’s literally one terminal command using flashrom and your done...
