When you have an injury its not a "underperformed" he was recuperating. not his fault plus van gaal didnt let him play enough minutes so we would never really know if he really underperformed. even Rio Ferdinand talked about Falcao & said that the problem was man u's coaching. man u failed this striker. the problem was a combo of 2 things, bad coaching and he was still in the recoup mode...

I meant it in the sense that Falcao did not produce what we know he was capable of producing. I agree with you that his struggles at Man Utd were largely the result of injuries and the way he was used by the club.

In a different English club, and without the injury problems, Falcao probably could have had a big impact on the league.

WOW. Man Utd played like a billion dollar version of West Brom there, and got a classic Mourinho win: gritty, ultimately effective, but dull, Dull, DULL!!! Hoofing it up to Fellaini over and over. Rashford/Ibra has bailed this team out of trouble so many times in the last year and a half I've lost count.

The guys on the Guardian's Football Weekly were discussing Mourinho recently and one of them (I forget which) made an excellent point about Mou: he is an astute tactician in one sense but thinks only about frustrating and nullifying his opposition. He puts almost zero effort into setting up attacks, relying almost exclusively in the individual quality of his forwards to create goals while he focuses only on stopping the other team.

In that sense, he is almost the exact opposite of a Guardiola or Klopp, who favor a philosophy balancing attack and defense, taking proactive approach to dominating games. That is why Mourinho teams win competitions but are usually dull and almost never blow anyone away in individual matches.

I feel sorry for Anderlecht; they fought until they were dead on their feet and never gave up. Man Utd should have cruised this match but nearly fouled it up.

Because it was talked about the other day: the bombing attack in Dortmund seems to be no terrorist act but was rather carried out by a single guy purely out of greed.
The guy lived in the same hotel the at the same time and bought thousands of shares of BVB immediately before the incident where he would have profited by a decreasing value (banker logic).

Sad times as usual.

Extraordinary story of sheer greed and an individual with an absolutely rotten moral core.

But what was interesting were the considerable lengths that the guy went to, in order to give the impression that this was indeed a terrorist attack.

Despite all that (and fortunately), his execution was amateurish and he was caught very quickly.

Oh, gosh, yes, agreed.

It seems that the police had been informed early on about some strange stock purchases - the broker reported it because he or she suspected that the money used to invest in the stocks may have been laundered - but, initially, the police saw nothing of significance in it as they were pursuing a line of inquiry that presupposed the involvement of radical Islam, or alienated young men, rather than greedy and amoral locals.

Don't know if any of you spotted the appalling remarks made by (the imprisoned) Adam Johnson (captured on a mobile phone video) and reported in a number of news outlets, including yesterday's Guardian.

The evident self-pity, arrogance, entitlement, and lack of remorse - plus the old chestnut of victim-blaming - while sneering at the appearance of his victim - are very ugly, and quite striking.

Elsewhere, in the Premiership, good results for Hull and Swansea - one of them will certainly escape the drop, and they both might yet make it.

Middlesbrough look as doomed as Sunderland. As recently as a few months ago, they had been beaten very few times, had drawn a lot, but failed to score many - well, hardly any - goals. However, they have lost three out of their last five games, and this is a bad time of year to develop a losing habit.

But, an excellent win for Bournemouth.

However, most attention will be on the two semi-finals for the FA Cup.

By all accounts, a stunning semi-final between Spurs and Chelsea, where, despite Spurs playing extremely well, - coming back twice to bring the scores level - Mr Conte showed his class, poise and sheer tactical sophistication, not least in his late substitutions.

As of now, entertaining dreams of achieving the legendary "Double" is not beyond the realms of possibility - let alone imagination - for Chelsea.

By all accounts we had the better chances in our 0-0 draw with Everton. I'd have settled for the draw before the game, but can't help thinking if Carroll had been fit things might have been different.

Well, a draw is at least one point in the bag, one added to the rankings in the table.

In the circumstances, I'd say a 0-0 draw wasn't bad; from what I read, it wasn't pretty but it wasn't bad.

Non cynical appraisal: Conte out-foxes Spurs, and looks to have made his impressive Chelsea side the favorite for a double in his first season in charge.

Cynical appraisal: Yawn, Chelsea wins again - the same plastic, money-gorged behemoth that practically invented the concept of hyper-spending one's way to victory in the modern era and has recently begun taken turns with Man Utd holding English football's competitions hostage for a quarter century. Oh yeah, and Moses dived.

Most impressed with Hull City's miraculous win against Watford (though to be fair the latter club are already on the beach). Hull have a real chance to avoid the drop now.

Yes, agreed. Moses did dive. Cynical, but it was also a stupid tackle - offering that kind of hostage to fortune in such a match - a FA Cup semi-final - means that fortune may claim the hostage, as happened here.

Agreed, Hull did very well, and deserve to be in with a more than fighting chance to avoid the drop.

So, Arsenal do well to come back against Manchester City - with a 2-1 victory having gone a goal behind - to secure a place in Wembley for the FA Cup Final.

Having said that, on yesterday's superb performance, I cannot really see Arsenal threatening Chelsea; Spurs - a considerably better - and more confident - team at the moment, one who played extremely well yesterday, coming back twice, were still not capable of holding Chelsea when the latter are firing on all cylinders.

I'm not sure Zlatan will return.

Neither am I - though, given that he has scored more oasis than the rest of United put together this season, he will be missed.

Now, I am not sure that he will return to Manchester United (although another one year contract is on the table apparently), or, whether his rate of recovery will allow him to return at all.

It would be a tragedy if his career were to end on this brutally unfortunate note, for he is a gifted, inspirational and exceptionally hard working footballer, and was easily by far the best acquisition from last summer's trawl for Manchester United.

Ugh. Liverpool have almost certainly thrown away fourth place against Big Sam's going-solidly-nowhere Crystal Palace. What makes it most painful is that Liverpool's loss is almost certainly Mourinho's gain. Injuries have left the squad threadbare, especially at the back where depth is most needed.

If Man City fail to win the derby this week I'd bet the farm on Man Utd making the top four AND winning the Europa League. :(

El Classico was fantastic!

Both for the match itself and the commentary by Ray Hudson:

"Working harder than a one eyed cat covering three mouse holes..."

"An arousal that lasts more than four minutes.."

"You could drop a tarantula into his shorts.." - Said about Messi.

"Keeping the tempo like a Jamaican steel drum band.." - Said about Marcelo.
