I like the front more on the M7.
I like the rear more on the M8.

Personally, I would love HTC to win it again for best smartphone. But I'm not sure how much different and improved the M8 is from the M7. It generally looks the same from the front with a few minor changes. I do like the M8's back a tad more than the M7 with the steel grey/brushed aluminium look and black strips. The successor to the Moto X would be my dark horse pick to win best smartphone of 2014. But let's not count out the S5, Note 4, LG G3, iPhone 6, and Nexus 6 either.
Lately on my BlinkFeed, the my mobile sources would usually show a pic of the HTC One or its logo on the back. Now it seems pix of the S5's rear with its heart monitor is popping up all over the place. I expect the M8 will be pictured alot with the rear as well. Plus, Samsung is too strong with marketing. Super Bowl, NBA, Academy Awards, Olympics, etc. They could very well recapture best smartphone of the year with the Galaxy S5 or even Note 4 and best manufacturer of the year like they were in 2011 and 2012 when they were back-to-back champions for both categories.
2013 might have been just a fluke year by HTC and LG. Samsung and Apple are going to come back stronger this year.
