yeah does photos look pretty good. So the second camera (sensor) records the depth in order to refocus a picture on a object, is that done on the fly or is it a bunch of settings and clicks you have to go through?

It really is a good looking device, very premium look. I'd be far more interested if it was the size of that Xperia Z1 Compact and had a better camera. I used the M7 long enough to know it didn't meet my needs/expectations.

Wanted to share this nugget from The Guardian's review of the M8. Pretty eye-opening.

The 2013 One was the best selling HTC smartphone ever, but still only sold 6.4m units in 2013 compared to Apple’s 62.9m iPhone 5s and Samsung’s 43.3m Galaxy S4s, according to data from research firm IDC.

People said the same about Macs compared to PCs and one point too.

I was just sharing a fact I read today. Wasn't making any point about anything.

I will say though that if the M7 sold below expectations for HTC I don't believe the M8 is going to be any different.

My M8 just arrived today. I upgraded to the 5S in November, but I'm bored with the OS. I loved the Oppo Find 7 until they showed the software, and I had the Note 3 before the 5S and hated it. Some people have complained about the weight, but I don't see it as an issue. I got an Otterbox Commuter today and it doesn't feel heavy to me at all. The power button on the top instead of the side still gets me, since I'm used to it being on the side when I've used Android phones previously. One thing I'm not fond of is the double tap to turn the screen on. Yes, it can be useful, but I physically carry my phone most of the time, and I'll look down and it will be on. Haven't picked up my 5S all day to do anything yet. I'm gonna let the M8 charge overnight and see how long the battery holds up tomorrow.

Please do share your experience. I am interested to see how the new One compares to the Nexus 5 in terms of easiness of one handed use.

OK, well I went to the at&t store and played with the display model today. It is a very beautiful phone, though some things did bug me.

The black HTC bar looks really big, and it bugged me how when I watched some video on it, it made the video off center. I know a minor gripe, but it would have been much better had the screen been centered between the two speakers.

The phone feels really tall, and if your used to holding a phone from the bottom it makes things a little more difficult to use one handed.

Personal preference, I don't like the brushed metal look, would've preferred and matte finish like last years.

Those were really the flaws I could see, on the plus side even though its tall and slightly wider than my nexus it still felt really good in hand. And if you shimmied your hand up half way it feels as usable as the nexus one handed. It also actually felt faster than my nexus, though that could be because i have over 200 apps installed while the store unit was stock.

The camera was also really fast, probably the fastest I have used on a smartphone. The pictures it took looked nice, granted they were only of the store and I only viewed them on the phone display, but they looked fine. The extra blurry effects were also really cool.

I really liked it, and actually almost bought one there on the spot, if not for the fact they didn't have any in store for another 2 weeks I would've walked out with one. Trying to talk myself from ordering one, I really shouldn't spend the money, my Nexus does a great job, but that build, speakers and performance are really drawing me in. I need help.

wow just shows what marketing can do

Verizon is selling 32gb off contract for $599. Is not that the cost of some flagships at the get go for 16gb or higher if the model's lowest storage is 32gb?

The manager at my local AT&T store had one in this pocket, so he let me play with it for about 15 minutes.

Pros:
The grey one oozes class
I appreciate the increased screen size tremendously.
Also it feels as solid as ever.
Finally added the SD card.
Good front facing camera, but I don't take selfies, so...
Performance seems good. No lag.

Cons:
Hefty. It's much heavier than the old One.
Bezels too large. Side by side with my GS4, it is a great deal taller. There is no excuse for this.
Rear camera is terrible. I snapped some quick pics with it. The second camera is a gimmick. The pictures look like crap on the phone's screen. I don't want to know how they look on my rMBP's screen.
Too slippery. More so than the old one. Not a fan of the brushed metal.

Still haven't seen the GS5. I'm still super confused on where I should go next. The water resistance capabilities on the GS5 are very important to me, especially if I drop it in a puddle, use it in the rain, get beer/etc on it. However, I really like the build of the new One. I'm not sure the build is such a huge deal anymore, especially because I would be using a case anyways.

Let's see...

I find myself wanting to get one of these so bad, particularly because I loved the original One so much. A guy is selling brand new ones on Swappa for $599 shipped (tax free). But then I think about it, and I don't think it's as good of a device as my Note 3...

Shiny shiny... but the camera is poor. You'd be less ripped off & disappointed getting a Moto G.

It comes down to priority in a device but the camera is not POOR so please don't exaggerate. Those who have it as a lower priority could easily make due.

Thanks for your thought provoking posts. You got nothing else better to do obviously which is a shame. :)

When people bore me or talk tripe, I tend not to reply, which is something you seem to have done. I don't need to "provoke thought" - I have no need to have ANY reason to post here; I'm not being rude, I am being happy :)

Have a jolly good day :)

Thanks. Just another moniker I can add to my disregard list. I appreciate being even happier now.that you made my day. :)

Any pic I care about will not be taken with a phone, cameras on a phone are not important to me. If I had to guess most people will just add some stupid filter and upload to Facebook, instagrm etc so almost any recent phone will be more than sufficient

This was my main concern with the new One. The aluminum plus rounded back would be a problem without a case.

Not a fan of slippery phones or tablets.

For sure, cameras on phones are great for women and kids for Facebook and instagram. If you want long lasting quality photos you use a good camera.
Imagine if you only ever took photos of your kids/family growing up with a phone camera? What a waste.

I'm only interested in the phone because of it's LED case accessory. I think it's genius.

I did not find the phone slippery. It is very thin whereby the size of it actually for me makes it easy to handle. Now the iPod touch 5 I had was so thin and small I had to get rid of it.

The camera is a lower priority to me. Performance, comfortability, the screen and audio all come in far ahead.
