The S5 is the unimpressively designed phone, let's be real. If you want to walk around with a device that looks like a bandaid, cool. Samsung always screws up with their S-line, but knocks it out of the park with their Note line. It confuses me.

That cracks me up but it's your opinion. You could always get a color or a case. But, I have to agree with you on the Note series, it's Samsung's new favorite.

I'm in the same boat as you and others in liking it. It's all a matter of personal preferences.

Glad we at least agree on the Note line! I'm upgrading from the Note 3, which has been so great to me for the past 5 or so months.

First off, the Black S5 doesn't look like a Bandaid, the gold one definitely does. The camera is an absolute knock out to me. The M8 may have improved from the M7 but it can't touch the S5's camera. Sorry it just can't.

The black one doesn't look that bad, you're right. The dimple pattern just isn't all that appealing to me, but I'm sure some will like it. And the S5's camera is better, but I seldom need to crop or zoom in on photos so the M8 works perfectly for me. Let us know your impressions of the S5 when you pick one up.

The camera on the S5 is not just better...it is phenomenal! The display screen is the best of any smartphone......I think the battery life will be equally as great. I have the S5 on pre-order. I posted pictures with my M* when i had it....i will post back with the same pictures only taken with the S5....

I wonder if the G2 still gets better battery life than the new One and S5. I still like that phone and may get it now that's cheaper. I don't see much improvement over the G2 in the S5 and new One. Just the camera on the S5 and 4K video recording.

Well, you also have the aluminum construction and BoomSound speakers, but those aren't that important to me. I prefer a smaller device.

Both the S5 and new One are much bigger than the G2.

One thing I hate about the S5 is that the display is Pentile again! Please no! I thought that wasn't that important when I got the S3 but now I can definitely see what they were saying at the time. This is the biggest reason I don't want the S5. Even more after I had the Nexus 5 for a short time. It's IPS display was just stunning.

Held the M8 for the 1st time yesterday- didn't care for it. It's too long, IMO. I'm holding out for the S5.

I was playing with it at best buy and don't really mine the length of the phone. In fact it was much more comfortable to hold than my Xperia Z2. However, the button placement on the M8 makes the camera and the phone overall really feel awkward to use. Might take awhile to get used to it though.

I have had a 5S, note 3 now the one 8 in the last month. This one is the best. Its super fast and feels great in the hand and not cheap like Samsungs. No more home button is refreshing. I don't mind it on my iPad but hated it on my 5S having to touch the thing to check it all day long.

Soon as i picked it up the first time i was sold, Samsung phones have always felt cheap and the S5 looks the same. The Note 3 back is nice but the sides look and feel cheap.

Good stuff, let us know how you get on :)

So far the phone has been great. The device doesn't feel as big I thought it did when I was playing with the model, probably because of the security device. Even though its long, its still comfortable to use, only problem because of the bar and speaker on the bottom, you have to shimmy your hand up to reach the upper quarter of the screen. If they needed that bar and logo, they could've put it above the screen instead of below and it would've helped with usability.

The phone is really fast, and the screen is beautiful. Sense 6 is really great, probably on par with stock on my Nexus 5, I don't even feel temped to put the Google Now launcher on it.

The camera, while not great, is actually pretty good. Its really fast which helps when talking pictures of my son, and the effects are really fun to play with. Low light was pretty good too. Only complaint is because of the low resolution it is lacking some detail, which is noticeable on shots farther away from you. This seems like a good camera if I'm taken close up pictures of my family, but not if I'm in the stands and my son is up to bat in t-ball.

Overall, very positive.

I couldnt imagine relying on a phone for those special pics of kids, family etc with a cell phone. Especially when the kids are small

Do you have kids? If kids, especially little ones, are anything it's unpredictable. They generally aren't accommodating in waiting for you to pull out your dSLR and let you set up the ideal shot. More times than not, you're more likely to have your smartphone close by for spontaneous moments. And there are plenty of times when it's just not convenient or suitable to carry the high quality camera (i.e. amusement park, beach, out riding bikes, etc) so, I personally want a fairly decent camera in my smartphone.

Of course, as with anything, these are just my preferences.

Yep it was the same with the M7. Basically anything beyond immediate focal distance simply suffers because of the lack of pixels in order to capture that detail. So landscape shooting in particular is pretty much too much for the ultrapixel camera to handle. If only they had just dropped it and stuck a 13-16mp shooter in there, they would have created an almost nirvanaseque device. Hey ho.

I am with you there, no phone camera is good enough for lasting memories of kids and family growing up. Just stupid if that's all you use.

Yes ok for the odd shot, but you will regret it if that is all you use!!

Smartphone optics just won't justify 13mp.

Try upscaling "ultrapixel" images to 13mp.

That makes zero sense.... I am not sure you understand the difference between a 4mp sensor and a 13-16-20mp sensor.

You can't upscale a 4mp image and suddenly make it 13mp - its just an over stretched 4mp image with even less detail.

And there is a massive difference in smart phones with proper 13-16mp sensors than the images the HTC's 4mp shooter captures.

There is a noticeable difference in smartphone sensors in my 20mp Lumia 1520 and a 13mp S4 with the Lumia producing clear more detailed pictures, compare that to the 4mp sensor on the M7/M8 and the difference is considerable.

So yes a smartphone DOES benefit from a better sensor, to say otherwise is utter nonsense.

Try comparing your 20mp phone to a 20mp Canon or Nikon? MP mean nothing, camera phones are for social media, anyone who knows anything about photography won't be using any smartphone as a camera. If you buy a smartphone for the camera you are wasting your money.

Don't lecture me on camera optics. I am more than educated enough, if you don't believe me - you and my €20k hassleblad digital back and lenses can enjoy that discussion in your own time...

As for saying HTC are debunking the MP myth, that is just as fallacious as the MP myth in the first instance.

What HTC fail to inform customers is that whilst it is indeed a fallacy that "more mp automatically make a better picture when if the lens itself is not up to scratch it simply won't."

So whilst a better lens will result in better pictures than just MP alone, what is important to state is that a decent lens with 13-20mp will still produce better 'more detailed' photos than a decent lens 4mp.

If you have a good lens, then sorry but MP do matter, and the fact HTC's camera fails to even live up to the promise of capturing more light for better images, when in almost every daylight shot it struggles and over exposes images resulting in a device which not only lack detail, but struggles with what 'strength' it supposedly has.

So yes the higher MP alone is a myth, but the fallacy that HTC has created with the Ultrapixel lens is a greater myth...... and people are still believing it...

If you buy a smartphone for the camera you are wasting your money.

No.. if you buy the HTC one for the camera you are wasting your money....
