I have the dot case, its actually pretty nice. It doesn't add too much bulk, and its a pretty cool feature to check the time or weather quickly without opening the case. I do think it will be better once they add support for viewing other types of notifications via the dot view case. I don't have any regrets buying the case, but I find myself wanting to use the phone naked since it is so well built and feels great in your hand.

Whilst they still don't compare to a digital SLR - for many of us the importance of a decent camera can't be understated.

I begrudgingly gave up my HTC M7 for its weak camera, it pains me that HTC went ahead with the same camera for the M8.

Taken with the Lumia 1520

I think most people have given up on point and shoot cameras and now just have a smart phone and maybe a DSLR. For some people their phone is their only camera. I went to a baby shower this weekend and no-one had a dedicated camera, everyone was using their phones. So for some people camera quality is a high priority.

I have a point and shoot but haven't used it for about 2 years because when we were moving my partner didn't pack the battery charger. I could have gotten a replacement but at that time I got the original galaxy note which had a decent camera. Now I'm trying to decide if I want to buy a new point and shoot camera. My note 3 takes nice enough photos, but I want something better and I've missed taking proper pictures.

I don't want a DSLR because they are too big and cumbersome for me to carry around. I'm wondering if I buy a point and shoot if I will see that much of an improvement (excluding low light) over my phones camera as smartphone cameras are quite good these days.

Saw one in a store today, a really nice looking device, but those BEZELS everywhere, like on a 2010 device are a deal-breaker for me.

I have a 6 month old baby and that the single reason why the HTC M8 isn't a viable option. I need to get good pics from my phone that are PRINTABLE. 4mp simply isn't good enough to print.

Like always, you get something (better camera) and will sacrifice on something else instead. There is no clean cut winner device, so priorities reign.

It would have been, if the 4MP sensor was 3:2 or 4:3.

Last year when the M7 was announced, I was actually excited to see the 4MP spec, thinking it's going to be large, high quality pixels. It was a shocker to me after buying the M7 to see the horrible picture quality, low light pictures aren't that great either. HTC failed miserably to deliver on both counts. I then realize the "4MP" sensor is 16:9, meaning looking at the central part of the picture it's like a 2MP photo. On a 1080p monitor you're looking at nearly 100% view without even zooming in. If you have a 2560x1440 monitor, it won't even fill your screen without blowing it up past 100%.

What a huge disappointing when I learned the M8 kept the same camera, only without OIS :(

Turn your M8 into a GPE M8......for those into flashing roms

Turn your M8 into a Google Play Edition M8 by rooting\flashing a rom...

HTC One (M8) owners can now convert their handsets into the nearly stock Google Play edition simply be following a guide and installing a tweaked Android build.

“Simply,” of course, is relative — this procedure is not recommended for novice users. It will also obviously void your warranty.

M8 owners have a few different choices on how to perform the conversion, and every option obviously requires gaining root access to the handset. All of the options are pretty easy for those familiar with the process of customizing your Android phone.

The full guide can be found by clicking through to the XDA blog post linked below in our source section.

Thanks but it is not going to help those disappointed with the camera. Unfortunately I will have to agree HTC needs to step that up for some more interest with their smartphones.

Check out the Sony DSC-RX100 II, a very nice p&s, excellent low light performance, 20.2MP, 1" sensor, etc. It is a bit pricey at ~$700, but it takes excellent pics and it is still quite easy to carry. Excellent reviews too.

The best I have seen the first one is about $450, and it too is an excellent camera. The II has better low light performance. Both have received outstanding reviews. It has a nice compact size to boot.

Back to topic. I got to play around with the M8 yesterday and I must say it is impressive. I saw no lag at all, superfast and smooth scrolling, the speakerphone was nice and clear, earpiece volume was excellent but I didn't try talking to anyone to see how the voice quality sounded to the other person. This phone has nothing to be embarrassed about. IMO, it is the best Android phone out at the moment.

I looked at it at Verizon and AT&T, and I must say that both of the stores I went to really push Samsung. I asked at Verizon what was the latest and greatest, and he proceeded to tell me that the new Galaxy was coming in less than a week. He didn't even mention the HTC which just came out a few days ago! When I brought this to hiss attention, he said not many people bought HTC. And when I asked about Windows phones, it was even less enthusiasm.

AT&T was slightly better about the HTC, but still mentioned the S5 first and told me that Windows phones didn't sell because they didn't have many apps available. I asked him which popular apps were available for iOS and Android but not Windows. He had no answer. Ditto for the Verizon guy, he said no apps were available for Windows and couldn't tell me which ones people wanted and couldn't get. IMO, HTC and Microsoft are getting the shaft at the carrier company owned stores. They are really pushing Samsung and the iPhone sells itself. People that come in wanting an iPhone won't even consider anything else.

Personally, I hope the HTC M8, Moto G and X, Nexus, Windows phones, etc do well. Samsung and Apple need some competition and I the M8 is every bit as good as the iPhone and clearly better in others.

Got a M8 in Amber Gold a few days ago. Simply love this phone! Best Android experience I've had to date. I got it to tide me over until the iPhone 6 comes out. Sure, the camera isn't as good as my 5s but it's still a hell of a phone.

Which carrier? It is an excellent phone with great build quality.
