Agreed. I can accept it if the camera is service-able. Now on something like the iPhone, I know I am going to get a great camera and I expect that from Apple. But on other devices, as long as the camera is good enough then I'm fine. I've taken a look at these photos taken with the new HTC One, and I'm surprised how good they are considering its only 4MP. The Moto X camera does look better, though.
Now if you're a hardcore camera enthusiast, then no the HTC One camera won't do it for you. But the photos look good enough to be able enjoy using the camera and uploading them online. I wouldn't rule out a phone if I thought the camera quality was acceptable, even if I did wish it were higher quality.
Remember the Nexus 4? Now that was a terrible camera.
Come on now, the camera certainly is not horrible. If every camera must be as good as the current best or nothing then how did people survive with cameras in phones a few generations ago. I guarantee I can go back and see people raving about how incredible the iphone 4(any flagship from years past) camera is and I would wager any of these new flagships are well past that. Just because it isnt the best doesnt mean it is bad by any stretch
It's simply a position of personal opinion of what is 'acceptable'.... And how on a scale of factors/ things you utilise on your smartphone how important a camera is on that scale.
My time with the M7 told me that the camera was not acceptable. Even factoring out the low mega pixel image struggling to capture detail, the fact it nearly always over exposed images in normal daylight conditions just was too much to just ignore or live with...
I don't expect the moon in a stick, but I do believe in a world of flagship phones that if your paying $800-900 (equivalent pricing here) for a device then every element within that new hardware should indeed be an improvement over previous generation hardware.
Whilst Apple haven't increased megapixels every year they have dramatically improved their camera sensor technology, the new HTC M8 if anything is worse than last years model with the removal of OIS.
As much as I love sense, as much as I admire the hardware & build quality, I can not accept such a weak camera, and the truth really is that HTC really didn't have to use this. When even their mid range Desire 816 has a 13mp camera, the decision to utilise the flawed ultrapixel technology after consistent negative feedback (even in their HTC Elevate forums) is utterly ridiculous.
The focusing tricks with the second sensor could have been achieved in software as proven by Nokia and others who already do this albeit with vastly bigger and more detailed images.
I do accept that a camera for social media is ok for some, the fact of the matter is is that a social media snapper should be the low & mid range camera choice, not the 'flagship'.
And at no point should the hardware in a flagship ever be of a lesser quality than the mid range device beneath it.
