What is everybody's problem with 4mp, even my 27 inch iMac has a less resolution than the pictures from my m8. You cannot see a difference until you zoom in all the time!

The problem is more in that the capability to add a better camera stairs them in the face and they choose not to do it. Face it, today, cell phones with cameras have all but replaced P&S Cameras. I rarely ever take one with me any more and I am a photographer.

I'm not sure why they made the decision to limit it's capabilities but overall, it is a deal breaker for me. Instead, I'll stick with my Note 3 where the camera is good, not great, but IMO much better than the M8.

----------

It's more for me when I print. If your printing a picture at decent 300dpi, the 2660x1550 image at 72dpi hasn't really got enough detail to print above 4x6 size.

Basically the 72dpi is a quarter of the 300dpi used for decent printing, meaning you certainly won't be blowing them up beyond a small print. No 10x8, 12x16 or 16x20 prints from those.

I just want to clarifiy that this true for cell phone/small sensor situations, but not all cameras. I shoot professionally and have had sub 4mp DSLR's that have yielded beautiful large prints. The quality of larger prints is less affected by megapixels than the quality of the sensor and lens.

That said, the other side of the argument is that reality is cell phone cameras aren't being used to take 8x10 portraits or wedding photos, thus wouldn't a 4mp image be sufficient. Perhaps it is, but back to my initial point, if technology makes it possible to do better, why not?

Yes the fact that they ignored review feedback and end user feedback even in the exclusive HTC Elevate forums from HTC nuts, regarding the camera performance is annoying.

It's like watching an athlete training over a year, refining their skills and expertise and listening to their trainers feedback, only on race day to decide to wear a pair of concrete sneakers ;) it's an avoidable crazy decision that they did not have to be make ....

Basically what the title says. AMA.

In a tube of smarties, why is it only the orange smarties have a different chocolate taste ?

-------

Oops may have taken the AMA too literally ;)

Real question / suggestion, how about posting a nice review of what you have discovered about the phone, it's good point and it's bad. How you find syncing, how you find day to day operation. What device you came from, are you syncing on a mac and how do you like that etc... Then maybe share some photo samples :) :)

I'm sure then if there are any unanswered questions folks will be able to ask :)

I agree with you, as it have pointed out that whilst on one hand HTC's megapixel myth busting is partially true, a fantastic lens and sensor even with a lower mp will capture better shots than a terrible lens / sensor with high mp count.

The point that is also true and HTC forget to mention is that if we had two devices with great lens/ sensors but one is 20mp and the other is 4mp, the higher MP model will undoubtably capture the more detailed and better shot.

We use a Hasselblad Digital Back and it's lenses in our studio here, so I am aware of shooting at the high end too :)

I don't expect Hasselblad peformance with my smartphone, (neither do most folks) but I do expect more than over exposed images in daylight and images that can capture more detail than just objects in close focal distance. Taking landscape shots on the ultrapixel camera is a poor experience :(

The "Garden" state
I am not the poster who started the "ask me anything" discussion, but I've had my M8 for almost two weeks.

Pros:

-Love the build quality
-Screen is great
-Despite the size, it's easy to hold for long periods, and I have no problem with one-handed use
-Fast!
-Sense UI has become quite subdued and polished
-Battery life is excellent
-Whole package makes it a fast, solid performer

Cons:

-Really wish the power button was on the side-it's just awkward on the top.
-Camera is middling. I am not a great photographer so I don't rely on my phone camera for anything other than social media/quick "lookit the cute thing my kiddo did" shots, so it's fine for my purposes, but if you're looking for a competitor to a high quality shooter you'll be disappointed. It's all about expectations-I don't expect my photos to look great even if you handed me a DSLR. Mrs QF can take amazing shots that look beautiful with the stock camera app on the iPhone 5C. She just has a better eye for it than me, and for my purposes the One's camera is more than satisfactory. Oddly, and this has more to do with how crappy I am at photography I think, Mrs QF has said the pics I have shared from the One looked better than the ones from my Lumia 928 in many cases...so mileage and expectation obviously vary.

I wouldn't turn the One M8 away based on the camera unless camera is your top priority. And if camera on phone is your top priority, then I'd look to a Lumia over anything else right now.

I am an ATT guy, but went to a nearby Verizon store, to see the different colors of the M8 in person. And my God, the Silver blows away the Grey, the silver looks so rich and high end, and I like the matte finish of the silver too, just looks like it was crafted out of a raw piece of aluminum. Where the Grey looks painted on, and way too shiny, Grey doesn't have that wow factor.

Why the heck doesn't ATT carry the silver ?

Oh yeah, the M8 trumps the S5 IMO. The M8 can be rooted, unlocked, S-Offed, custom recovery, and flash stock ROM's, or tweaked Sense ROM's, or GPE ROM's. The Boom speakers are crazy good for YouTube videos, and speaker phone conversations. And all benchmarks show the M8 has even better battery life than the S5, not by much, but still, end of the day the M8 has slightly better battery life.

S5 no root, no custom recovery, no flashing ROM's. Touchwiz is butt ugly, yes it's improved and looks much better on the S5, but still is a hog, and can still lag a little here and there. Ok the S5 is waterproof that is cool.

I'll take the M8 over the S5 any day

The thing is, the camera is important, it may not be the most important feature. So when you take that into account, and how similar the alternatives like a Galaxy S5 or iPhone perform, that's why people will look for an alternative.

I know right? All three colors must be a Verizon exclusive or something. I was kind of upset that T-Mobile only has the Gunmetal one as well. I really wanted the Silver one but oh well. It's still an awesome phone though.

*EDIT*

In my contacts, how would I get facebook to sync up with their pictures? On iOS it's simple and it does from the settings menu when you hit "sync contacts." When I do it here on Android nothing really happens.

For me its a phone first, this phone has the best call quality/clarity and reception of any phone i have had since BB, including 5S and note 3, and the speaker phone with the boom speakers tops it off.

For women and kids that are after a social/ toy phone with a good camera there is iPhone.

From what I have read. HTC signed some kind of deal to have the Ultrapixel camera for 2 phones. I don't think they ignored people. They just made a mistake 2 years ago when making the deal.

If that is true, why use a 13mp in the Desire 816 ? The mid ranger has a better camera. Surely they could have just used the ultrapixel in their other devices and out a higher mp camera on their flagship.

I have no idea what the terms of the deal were. May have been a deal done with just the HTC one. I really have no idea, but it sure does seem weird they went with the same thing people had such complaints about. Also very interesting was that they made the front facing camera with more MP. I don't know this just seems like something were their hands might have been tied.

Yep maybe.. Crazy decision at the end of the day regardless, and one that may hurt HTC long term, as it may put a lot of folks off the M8 if like me they were disappointed with the M7 camera. It seems like a case cutting their nose off to spite their face.

Agreed. I would love to buy the phone, but I am super happy with my iPhone 5s (which does have if not the best. One of the best cameras), and I don't see myself upgrading to anything but the next iPhone. I loved my HTC One M7, but I just have too many Apple products that work together so well. I see no point in switching.

I understand that.

I feel the same about the note line. I have all the notes and they work perfectly together from S note to scrapbooker. I like to have a line full of products instead of one note, ipad or another device. Just as I have my gear 1 too.

Over the last two years I have switched between iOS and android too many times. I am sticking with iOS for a while. Until I switch from an iPad I will keep using iOS.

If I had the money I would get a second line, and get the HTC one M8. Really do miss my old HTC One.

my GF has the HTC one and she loves it. It's a great device. I still have my ipad 2 and my girlfriend uses that now but it's amazing as old as it is...the device still works well and does what it needs for her. internet, youtube and netflix...

Yeah I upgraded this year to the iPad Rmini. Love it, and have my iPad 2 to my brother. Thing is still going strong. iOS 7.1 made it work just fine.

I remember last year they had to delay the M7 because they couldn't get the ultrapixel camera because HTC wasn't a "tier 1" manufacturer anymore. Maybe they had to order a certain amount in order to get the M7 out, and they were stuck with a bunch of extra sensers so they used them here?

Yeah who knows. It was just a bad deal no matter what happened.
