What is everybody's problem with 4mp, even my 27 inch iMac has a less resolution than the pictures from my m8. You cannot see a difference until you zoom in all the time!
The problem is more in that the capability to add a better camera stairs them in the face and they choose not to do it. Face it, today, cell phones with cameras have all but replaced P&S Cameras. I rarely ever take one with me any more and I am a photographer.
I'm not sure why they made the decision to limit it's capabilities but overall, it is a deal breaker for me. Instead, I'll stick with my Note 3 where the camera is good, not great, but IMO much better than the M8.

It's more for me when I print. If your printing a picture at decent 300dpi, the 2660x1550 image at 72dpi hasn't really got enough detail to print above 4x6 size.
Basically the 72dpi is a quarter of the 300dpi used for decent printing, meaning you certainly won't be blowing them up beyond a small print. No 10x8, 12x16 or 16x20 prints from those.
I just want to clarifiy that this true for cell phone/small sensor situations, but not all cameras. I shoot professionally and have had sub 4mp DSLR's that have yielded beautiful large prints. The quality of larger prints is less affected by megapixels than the quality of the sensor and lens.
That said, the other side of the argument is that reality is cell phone cameras aren't being used to take 8x10 portraits or wedding photos, thus wouldn't a 4mp image be sufficient. Perhaps it is, but back to my initial point, if technology makes it possible to do better, why not?
