Why doesn't anyone talk about the audio? Doesn't anyone use their smartphone device as their daily driver for mobile music??? Understandable not for movies for the latter question but at least for that in a pinch I think one would do OK.

The audio is brilliant, i use it for net stream tv, and youtube, great for calls on speaker phone too.

I ended up returning my M8. It's truly a FANTASTIC device...but the camera really just didn't feel up to par (for my needs, lots of landscape shots) and like always, missed the integration of the Apple ecosystem. But anyone looking for a amazingly built phone with excellent performance, speakers, and great features, the M8 will be great. Sad to see it go but couldn't justify the off-contract price for me.

I was able to get mine for $539 from Att with no contract or next. I just asked for a discount. First offer was $50 and I said $100 would be better and they did it. Well worth it!

Ha, you and me both. Though the Pre hasn't been in the rotation for over a year, it's mostly been an alarm clock.

Hey

What's the weather and clock widget you're using in the HTC Ones and the Nexus 5?

Thanks.

Working on it... (but I suspect you may be right) :)

Are you liking it more than the S5 so far?

What's better than the S5 and worst, and the other way around?

That is the Yahoo! Weather clock widget, you have to download the yahoo weather app and it comes with it.

Even if HTC had a better camera in the M8, how many more would it sell? Today's food for thought. :)

The iPhone and Samsung is what is on Joe/Jane's radar blipping endlessly.

I think it would make a sizable difference, honestly. It's the #1 reason didn't pic one up (yet). Put a better camera on it and I'd be all over it.

Yeah personally if I listen to music from my mobile it's usually with headphones, but the M8's audio is lovely. It's not louder than any other mobile, but it is more balanced and has much better overall tonal quality.

One quick thing I must say about the device is ...... boy is it lightning fast, and its memory usage / management is as good as my stock android S4 GPE.

Try listening to some audio on you tube. Do a search for "audiophile music" and just have at anything that interests you.

As far as speed, it makes my HTC Rezound seem like a turtle. :)

It does not matter what HTC does, it isn't on most people's radar. The Rezound when released was one of the better smartphones out there and it didn't even get mentioned much and the camera was pretty good besides. It is bettered easily by the M7 as far as specs and build and still low sales on that one. And the M8 which is better still and we all know what the sales output will be.

Is there a good app to keep the notification light going longer than 5 mins besides light flow?

That app is a major data hog compared to other weather apps.

Is it? I have an unlimited plan so I haven't really looked, but it makes sense because it also downloads all those high res images for the back ground and rotates it. You can disable those images, so that would probably help with the data usage.

And a smaller size for some people like me who don't want phablets (it almost is one).

Why in the world would AT&T sell you the M8 at a discount without any contract. That would mean they are losing money on the device without getting any guaranteed money from you. Calling BS on this one.

If you think the M8 is large, check out the Galaxy S5 or the Note Mini as I call it. After 6 days with the S5, the M8 feels almost as slim as the iPhone. :)

I cannot get any flagship smartphone off contract from AT&T at one of their stores. And I'm in your neck of the woods.

Verizon lets me, not AT&T.

Hmm not BS. Always someone that can't believe it. They take care of their customers. They said since I was a good customer they gave me the credit and sold it to me as proven below. And trust me, they are not losing money. They definitely don't pay that much for the device...they pay even less than they sold it to me for.

Thats not AT&T, that's that stupid stores policy. I would call AT&T's customer service and complain.

I assume someone must have traded in their M8 likely bought as a carrier upgrade .... They didn't want it, but yeah still amazing they offered me it that cheap.

No I didn't trade in my S4, it's still being repaired. €50 for a new sim tray repair....

How are you liking the M8 so far?

How do you compare it to the S5?

Great! You should drop your in the sink and report back to us! :) Do a test for us.... Fill your kitchen sink with water. Set the camera app for a 5 second delay. Then set it down in the sink........and let it take pictures for us. Post them here......

No thanks, i wouldn't do it with a S5 either, from reports here they are more rain proof than water proof. BE careful:)

I've only had a 10-15 minutes hands on with the S5 so I'm not going to go down a route of comparing it directly to that as that wouldn't be fair.... I canceled my own S5 order as I couldn't justify a second 24 month contract in order to get it with the half price gear fit...

re: m8

But so far I'm enjoying it.... Still waiting for my unlock code from O2 Ireland so I haven't been able to use it as a phone just yet as I'm with Vodafone. O2 say it takes 4-14 days to get my code, they don't have the IMEI in their database (despite it being locked to them) so they have to get the code of HTC and then forward it to me....

So yeah until I've actually used it as my daily driver I'm not going to offer my full review for you all as that too would be half arsed to do otherwise.

I can tell you a few snippets, boom sound is great as always, the screen is very nice but I'm not a big fan of onscreen buttons, the fitbit integration is great as I'm a fitbit flex owner and to my great surprise the pedometer is excellent and very accurate (the tally between the dedicated tracker and the app itself with motion sensors is very close indeed). Build quality is much better than the older HTC One.

I'm still to get my dot view case, they are hard enough to get hold of with most online retailers not shipping new stock till May.

I'm happy with the device, the camera is a little better than than last years and that's about as much as I can say on it, when I do my review I'll post photos from my other devices etc..

Sense 6 is very fast, and I mean very fast. Even with 9 main apps open and others in cache, I can go into application/memory management and I rarely go over 1GB memory used with the majority of time usage hovering between 650-800mb.. Very impressive memory management, and the speed that everything opens and the fluidity is likewise impressive.

But yeah .... the M8 is what it is.... A very nice looking phone thats very fast, has great speakers and audio quality in general, nice bright screen, great battery life so far........ and a very average/so-so camera. It's what I was expecting so in that sense I am not disappointed, but neither am I overwhelmed in any way....

A Quickie !!!!!

HTC camera versus Google Camera on the M8

Surprising the difference just software can make.

Google Camera

IMG_20140418_124514.jpg

Less saturation but probably most accurate given the grey conditions outside and focus is probably a fraction better. However smallish red tint in the image.

HTC Camera

IMAG0055.jpg

More saturated image, and focus area is smaller compared to that of the google camera app. However branch detail seems more crisp and detailed.

Which is better, subjective I guess - but interesting the difference changing camera apps can make.

I have had my S5 in water already....no problems there at all. The Galaxy S5 does protect against dust and water to some degree and is IP67 certified. While there might be demonstrations showing that the HTC One M8 can also be dunked in water while operating, but HTC doesn’t advertise this ability or honor warranty claims for water damage. Samsung will honor warranty claims as the Galaxy S5 is IP67 certified.....
So you say your M8 is water proof....so show us!
Here is my S5 underwater.....so lets see yours! :)
