Was intrigued until I saw specs for the CPU and RAM. I don't expect top end (though I don't see why they couldn't come closer to their flagship, as Sony has done) but this is a big step down. Only 1GB of RAM and a nearly 2 year old CPU? The iPhone only has 1GB of RAM, is probably the most optimized smartphone on the market, and it can struggle on occasion due to its memory limitations.

Another new release that makes too many compromises...:(

Ill just say my M8 with 9 open apps uses about 850mb-900mb
With no additional open apps it sits about 650mb (with all background services enabled)

I have only seen it go over 1GB once and thats with all those other apps open and then launching Asphalt 8.

I'd be less concerned about the Mini 2 having 1gb than Samsung's Mini S5 having 1.5gb.

Understood, though I still think it's walking too close to the proverbial edge, so to speak.

Regardless, as much as I like the design/style, I'll stick with the Z1 Compact over this.

I just find myself really irritated by the fact the mini has a 13mp and I'm stuck with this ok 4mp and a depth sensor that has lost all it's novelty 3 seconds after first using it ....

Completely baffles me why they did this ....

Wont be long before they surely announce a Z2 compact too.

Just watched a brief hands-on with the One Mini 2 over at Android Central and near the end of the video they bring up a great point--the new One Mini 2 is basically identical in size to last years One (M7), which has a superior display (resolution and size), CPU, RAM, and has an IR blaster. So at this point the only improvement this 'mini' version has over last year flagship is a potentially better camera, though one with far fewer software options.

These choices by HTC baffle me as well, because I can almost guarantee that the M7 will be cheaper than the new One Mini 2.

Yep ... strange indeed, especially as M7 is getting Sense 6 etc.. too.

Yeah, but M7 has that weird button arrangement (I highly prefer the on screen buttons on the M8 and Mini 2), and also a terrible camera IMO.

Also people complained about not so great battery life last year, so maybe the new Mini 2 might be better.

Three important details to take into consideration.

I don't need a powerful CPU, but I'll admit those 2GB RAM are preferable.

To me the Mini 2 doesn't seen like a big upgrade over my S3: same battery size, same RAM, low end CPU, I already have microSD, still 720P display but smaller, etc.

But I really like the looks, BlinkFeed, etc. But that price...

Button arrangement is unconventional but I got used to it fairly quickly, didn't bother me for the 7 months I used it. The bigger benefit though is you get at least an extra 0.5" of useable display real estate compared to the Mini 2.

Battery life for my M7 was decent--not spectacular as being reported with the M8 but good enough for a day of typical moderate use.

As usual, the camera performance is the big X factor.

I think you've hit the nail on the head with this statement:

To me the Mini 2 doesn't seen like a big upgrade over my S3: same battery size, same RAM, low end CPU, I already have microSD, still 720P display but smaller, etc.

It's capabilities mirror that of a 2 year old device. That's what is unacceptable for me personally.

I'm back to my m8 as my daily driver after a week with my S5 as a daily driver, It's just so much more intuitive to use than my s5.

After 3 weeks with the M8 I returned to my iPhone 5S. The reasons?
  • Display quality is so much better on the iPhone. Color accuracy is bad on the HTC and that is for me a show stopper.
  • The device is a bit too big for me.
  • Android. Yes, it has some great features, but a lot of rough edges. It isn't as polished as iOS and it doesn't integrate as well with OS X as iOS.
  • The iPhone does all basic stuff much better than Android..

Sense 6 is great. I am normally a huge Nexus phone guy, having owned the Nexus-One, Nexus-S 4G, Galaxy Nexus, and Nexus 4.

I LOVE Sense 6, I even tried the GPE ROM on the M8, and ran back to Sense 6. It looks great, very minimalistic design, and cool black white theme, and great Phone Dialer app, as well as many other HTC apps.

I liked the phone dialer app on my S5 better, bigger and more responsive.

Saw the M8 today (although the device was off). WOW. Such a beautiful device!

It's not as big or tall as I thought. Well, yes it is, but it's bearable. And it's really thin and light (not as heavy as many say). It's also not that slippery either.

Shame about the camera. I almost wanted to buy it :D:D

How's it more responsive?

Personally I think whilst it's a slight improvement it still feels like the same dialer from a 2009 device. It does the job but without much finesse, but I can see why brighter bigger buttons could be preferential that the darker theme of Sense 6, but still don't see how it's more responsive ?

One thing that is really good on the S5 over the M8 dialer wise though is when your in an application and you get a call, you get that little window to answer / reject a call rather than dialer screen take the whole screen.

I found on the M8 when you pressed on a no to dial it wasn't as quick to display the no as the S5 is. Seemed like a short pause before it showed. And yes its bigger and brighter, nicer to use.

I just got the iPhone 5S two days ago and will be getting the M8 instead. Reasons?
The display is just way to small
No back button is driving me nuts
No app drawer
Cant change audio levels selectively. For instance I turned down the volume before bed and the alarm was silent. Stupid thing. The ability to change audio levels for media, ringer and alarm is something that I just cant live without.
Poor cross app integration. I couldnt select a picture and simply share it on Google Plus. I was forced to go into the app
I live in Canada and for obvious reason I cant download Pandora, Hulu, etc. I have a custom setup at home and use these services (paid subscriber). With Android, all I have to do is download said APK, and I'm done. First of all, I cant download anything on the browser on the phone. So I downloaded it on my Mac, transferred to iTunes and tried sending it to my phone. The app is there, just says installing and thats it. SO FRUSTRATED.
The list for me goes on. I used to be a huge iPhone lover, and tried out Android years ago. I decided to try out the 5S for fun, and it honestly feel like I'm going back in time. Too many missed features for Apple to stay competitive in the Smartphone market.
The M8 so far is the best Android out there.

I got my M8 at the beginning of April and I love it. I had to have it replaced because the top right corner by the screen was lifting. The day I shipped it back to HTC I noticed the camera lens cover was cracked. I had it in a case from day one, never dropped it, and nothing ever shared a pocket with it ever. Anyway, my new one has been fine, but I've read about this issue on AndroidCentral M8 forums. It seems like a pretty common issue, but I'm wondering how common. Maybe it was a bad batch?

Faults tend to be common on forums because people look for an avenue to collectively report such things and find others with similar issues.
