How's the camera treating you vs the S5?

No one buys the M8 for the camera ;)

The S5 is much superior in that department. However if your just using the image for social networks and not cropping in, the M8 can take some good shots.

Indeed if you reduced the res /size of an S5 picture so that they both were about the same size, then the difference is surprisingly marginal. However viewed both at 100% side by side and clearly the 16mp can capture more info than the 4mp.

......
Also tip ... The HDR mode on the m8 is not working properly. When I shoot in auto I tend to get VASTLY better results in lighting and clarity than in HDR mode - as the HDR mode tends to over expose far more than just standard Auto mode.

If you want to use HDR mode, try Googles own camera software. It produces better HDR shots than sense camera, so clearly there is some software issue there.

_____ unfair I know. 4mp v 34.4mp But yeah here you can see what I mean - cropped to fit this forum window/thread so that they both look same size and either is ok. Click on either and that's where the megapixels kick in. So viewed as a similar sized image to its rivals the M8 produces similar results, but viewed 100% and 4mp can't compete. But if you were sharing on Facebook / instagram / snapchat etc... then the difference between them would be negligable. Heck if you posted it in the tapatalk app on this forum - the difference would be negligible too as that crops and compresses images.

One thing to note here.....while MRU can show a comparison like this.......the rest of us mere mortals do not have the keen eye and skills that he does!
Great pics as always MRU! :)

Looks like the scrapped the HTC One Prime but still have plans for the HTC One M8 Ace....

The rumoured HTC One M8 Ace has finally made an official appearance on the Chinese HTC website, with a launch date of June 3.

Although the Chinese HTC website calls it the HTC One Vogue Edition, it is expected to launch in the UK next week as the One M8 Ace.

At first glance, this plastic bodied HTC One M8 looks a lot like last year’s HTC One M7 but just in a more affordable body. It looks like it is going to come in a range of colours too, with blue, red, black and white shown.

Despite that new plastic body though, the One M8 Ace still packs high-end specs including the same 2.5GHz quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 801 processor.

It has a 13-megapixel rear camera like the HTC One Mini 2, rather than the dual-sensor UltraPixel of the One M8. This is paired with a 5-megapixel front-facing camera for video calling.

The BoomSound stereo speakers are of course there, but there’s no mention of a screen size as yet.

Earlier rumours tip the display to be the same 5-inch 1080p HD panel found in the One M8.

It doesn’t look like the M8 Ace will come with an IR blaster though, if you were particularly hoping for one.

Official pricing for the One M8 Ace has yet to be revealed, but it is expected to be a mid-range affair, thanks to that plastic body.

However, we’ll hopefully find out at the official launch next week on Tuesday June 3.

How is this M8 Ace considered a mid range HTC device ? It seems exactly as good and on par as the current One M8 flagship, just plastic instead of metal, but same internal hardware, same screen, same Sense 6, same dual speakers.

And HTC made the awesome white colored One X two years ago, and to me, that was hands down the best looking polycarbonate ( plastic ) phone ever made. That One X in white looked so sweet two years ago. So I am cool with HTC going back to polycarbonate, it's not a knock off or cheapskate version IMO.

Yeah the white one X was lovely. I actually bought the grey one X and then bought the white housing and turned my grey model into the white...

We're unlikely to see the ACE in Europe and the US however.

Everyone and myself complain about Samsung's crappy plastic builds. Why couldn't they just copy the white One X polycarbonate solid build quality ?

I'd be totally fine if the One M9 next year, was influenced from the One X design again, just slap a 5" 1440p screen on it, keep it tight and compact, and the polycarbonate would make the phone lightweight.

I'm using my verizon phone predominantly overseas and since it's an american phone, I can't seem to access the software update option since it's only available in CDMA mode whereas I'm using Global.

I've read that verizon has pushed out an update recently so how do I go about updating my software in this case?

Here's what it says in recovery if it helps

jamezr, yes the One M8 does own :D

I have had like 13 different Android phones over the last four years. Only a few of those phones really stick out as awesome and amazing for their time. The HTC One M8 is for sure on that list, along with the old Note 2, and original EVO 4G, and of course my first Android phone, the Nexus-One.

I tried a few GPE ROM's, but didn't like a few little things, the dialer / contacts app, etc... Where as Sense 6 has blown me away with it's cool minimalistic theme, and very light on the system, and actually super fast with ZERO lag. The HTC dialer app is the best, the HTC e-mail app is awesome, the HTC web browser is great, and I am running Nova launcher Prime, and customized the look of the phone, can't tell the difference looks wise if this is GPE or Sense :)

I finally wrote up my review of the HTC One M8. Better late than never! Been so busy lately! http://www.thegeeksoffice.com/?p=1749

Bottom Line:

Overall Rating: 4/5

Pros:

  • Excellent overall performance
  • Solid, thin design and excellent build quality
  • Sense 6.0 is the best Android experience outside of stock Android
  • Good sounding stereo speakers
  • Excellent battery life
  • Refined, intuitive software such as the camera’s
  • MicroSD card support

Cons:

  • Can be too slippery to hold without a case
  • Still stuck in the past with 4MP camera
  • Photo quality is inconsistent and photos can be too overexposed
  • No wireless charging, still on USB 2.0

Decided to try out one of the new 4.4.3 GPE ROM's, wow I thought I liked Sense 6, but 4.4.3 is great. Sticking with this for sure. This phone + GPE is the best.

I tried several 4.4.2 GPE ROM's earlier, didn't like them, but 4.4.3 just feels so much better, aand nice tweaks to the Dialer , Contacts, and Messaging app.

Nice to be able to flash roms huh? I wish other phone makers would follow HTC on this....

That was a big deciding factor, for me getting the One M8. Having the option to flash between Sense and GPE ROM's.

The S5 on ATT doesn't even have basic root, let alone GPE.

I believe that is how samsung will be from now on. ATT & Verizon devices will be locked up tight. Buy tmobile devices for use on ATT, you're SOL on Verizon.
