Congrats! Time for a new car :)

This is what heaven looks like

I wish I could splurge on a Cayman but sadly, utility comes first. I've already started my preliminary search for a 435i Gran Coupe or 535i. Love how consumerism works today, clear one debt, take on another! :D

Haha, so true!

I really want a Cayman too. If only there was an AWD Cayman. Come on Porsche!

Seems like a dumb idea, honestly. We really don't know what this car is, when it will actually be available, or whether or not Tesla will be around to make it.

All of this. I bet 75% of the people are just going to try to flip their reservation.

Even if I wanted one after seeing and driving one, I probably won't have one in my hands until like 2020. When the Model S first came out, the waiting period was years.

I'm hoping it's not just a shrunken Model S...

Honestly, i'm not in the car market for at least 5 years, so I'm not super interested, anyway, but I just worry what you have to take out of a Model S to make it cost $35,000.

It's probably going to be like a 3 series. $35k will be pleather, no HID headlights, vinyl seats, no sunroof, tiny battery.

$60-65k will get you the better battery, AWD, LED headlights, full leather, AutoPilot, etc

Reservations started this morning, but it looks like current Tesla owners and high-optioned orders will get first dibs. Like the Model X right now.
That's a terrible business model if you ask me.

Why does a guy with an $80,000 Tesla need a $40,000 Tesla? Wouldn't it be better to expand and give everyone equal priority.?

I agree with you completely, but I guess it breeds brand loyalty. Porsche (and Ferrari) do the same thing. You weren't able to get a 911R unless you are a 918 owner or a repeat Porsche GT car customer. GT3/GT3RS allocations only go to repeat buyers.

According to the Tesla representative at Tesla, the sequence will be filled something like this:
1. West Coast family members and employees
2. West Coast existing Tesla owners
3. West Coast non- Tesla owners
4. Central US Tesla owners
5. Central US non-Tesla owners
6. East Coast Tesla owners
7. East Coast non-Tesla owners

Not a lot of Tesla fans in here it seems?

This is a historic day in automotive and environmental history. When have you ever seen people line up to buy a car that they havent seen, will not get for possibly 2 years, and generate an estimated 50k number of preorders for a vehicle???

Never.

Tesla is revolutionizing the auto industry and this is just another step in the bigger process and it is an impressive feat with what they have accomplished today. Enjoy the ride.

Most people don't have to wait in line for a car, period. Car companies know better. They either have a waitlist or release because, unlike Tesla, they have suitable production to make the cars.

There's nothing historic about today. The electric car is ongoing, the gasoline car is better than it has ever been. The thing doesn't drive itself, and the only reason these preorders exist is to infuse cash for Tesla.

Tesla is revolutionizing the auto industry and this is just another step in the bigger process and it is an impressive feat with what they have accomplished today. Enjoy the ride.
They haven't actually done anything except failed at making a crossover and delayed production on every model. Oh yeah, and they are trudging on towards bankruptcy. There's a really good chance these people are throwing away $1000

lol, as I said not a fan of Tesla which is fine but don't downplay the events that are occurring today that everyone with a mind of their own can appreciate what is unfolding.

They have revolutionized how a car is purchased and not dealing with crooked car companies that force you to their dealerships and needed bailouts from the government to continue their practices and that have a terrible pricing system. Tesla has created 2 cars that have scored off the charts compared to every other car ever created in terms of safety, quality, and customer satisfaction. This has been corroborated by Car and Driver and many other automobile industry companies.

You may not like their cars or what they are as a company but to say what they are accomplishing today isn't impressive is just being a blind hater and arguing for the sake of doing it. Have fun.

In order for a revolution to occur, the model has to work. It hasn't worked yet. They're still going bankrupt.

I could go either way on Tesla, but the company is so much like NeXT right now, it's scary.

It's not that I hate Tesla, it's just the way they're going about this. Just show the damn thing and start making it.

The reservations are just an excuse to get them more cash. The vast majority of buyers don't wait months for a car. They find something on the lot and just buy it.

Tesla is still not making money, so I'm not sure whatever they're doing... is actually working.

I still think they'll be gobbled up by a larger automaker in a few years. Competition is too tough. There's a reason why no major OEM hasn't gone full EV yet. It's not proven technology.

It's not like Tesla has some special engineering expertise. If Audi/BMW/Mercedes/Porsche wanted to go full-EV, it would be a cake-walk for them, but they don't. Because it makes no sense right now. Even the Mission E is years off.

The best thing about Tesla is their over-the-air-update system to add features and the Supercharging network. Other OEMs need to use OTA, instead of wasting time at the dealer.

I am not sure where this is coming from. Everywhere I have read has their likelihood of that being way less than it ever has been before which includes the larger auto companies which have a much higher chance of going bankrupt versus Tesla.

I'd like to read more about this if you have any info on it.

And it looks even dumber now, seeing the price of gas. And it's also not that much cleaner.

Plus, none of them are going to cost $35,000 and most of the people who order today won't qualify for the tax deduction. And the thing won't ship for over two years.
