Agreed. There's no reason for a street car to oversteer on the street.

As far as the A4, I'm just glad it's glued to the road in non-ideal conditions and it's quite nimble.

I mean, not that I would do this, but you can always include a little a throttle oversteer :D

You make a good point. I was thinking about going to an S4 in a couple of years but I'm concerned about understeer and the transmission in the new models.
Typically, I won't touch a new engine or electronics system until it's had a few years to stew. The Germans make it easier since they'll use the same engine across their brand(s) and the electronics systems are more or less the same. I want to say Toyota and Lexus share things, but I'm not completely sure.

Did you option out any of the driver convenience features?

From the days before lawyers were in control...

The "Driver's Handbook" for my MG advises different front/rear tire pressures for understeer, "neutral" and oversteer. I normally keep all four the same, which gives just a bit of understeer. As you increase the rear relative to the front, the car tends toward oversteer.

To be fair, the suspension on that car is-all things considered-quite primitive. The front is decent enough(double A arm) but the live axle on leaf springs in the rear was pretty unsophisticated even by 1960s sports car standards.

I had my Z06 setup really neutral (square wheel/tire, changed front swaybar), hahaha, it was a hoot, you could carry a bunch of extra speed into a turn, steer out of it with the throttle (depending on the turn/track that have included a touch of drift ).

Your first time spinning out is priceless. Bamboozled would easily describe my feelings at the time. Second, and most important, is doing an empty track lap with your driving aids turned off or turned off as much as the system allows you to. It's fun to try it out on various cars and see how they handle. Take a motion sickness drug beforehand.

I've only run HPDEs where you drive your own vehicle, but I've attended a few with buddies where we did a car swap, and a few times a friendly owner of something super interesting (Challenge F-car for example) let me turn a few laps (they of course did a ridealong :D).

Almost done, the revised boot is attached to the mounting ring and it looks like it will have plenty of movement slack once everything is back together (again ...)

Oh yeah, worked great this time around! I also knew to cut the bottom threads at the end to relieve some tension during install (and that tucks away, so no biggie).

I didn't, but i'm not really looking, honestly.

I'm thinking either an A4 Prestige or an S4 with European Delivery as my next car.

Not even the Blind Spot Assist system? I really like that on Audi and Porsche. Their approach to alert a driver is miles ahead of other marques with the tiny light up in the side mirrors. The Panameras we test drove last weekend had it optioned out or they were standard (I didn't go over the order sheet). And you notice the light on the housing one way or another.

You got the Premium Plus, right? The S4 might be a sweet upgrade in the future. Though, if Austin tech gets a huge upswing, you could go for something even better.

GM utilizes the same approach. My Camaro has a light in the side mirrors for the blind zone alert. I also like their lane departure/anti-collision system with the seat vibration instead of beeping and alerts going off that startle you( and passengers).

A light in or a visible light and not a glow from behind the mirror? Yeah, beeping and other alerts will go ignored by most people.

Oh actually looked up Audi's implementation.... Yeah it's the in the mirror type vs Audi's almost side marker like lighting. I notice it all the time in the corner of my eye when ever it turns on.

I'm sure VAG as a whole did research to see which one was more effective. I don't pay much attention to small lights popping up on the mirror's surface but I'd notice a large light on the housing light up. You do make a really good point about the vibration, though. I think Mazda do a vibrating steering wheel that increases in intensity the longer you're in danger. The housing light may pose an issue with certain vehicles, especially if their housing is aerodynamic. Though, I suppose it could go on the interior door in the corner.

My honest opinion? All these safety features should become required standard features within the next five to eight years on new cars.

I won't buy another vehicle without all of them. The GC we're looking at has blind spot detection (lighted indicator in side view, plus an audible with the turn signal), cross traffic, lane departure, forward collision (with active braking), side approach detect, ACC, brake drying, and all the stability/traction systems you'd expect.

The cross traffic detection in my GT has saved me from what might have a been a parking lot fender bender a few times.

I’m 90% sure I’m going to order a S5 next month and ED is not available when I buy in Canada.

Right now I have a W205 C300 and was sure I was going to upgrade to a C43. The S5 is cheaper and rides much better than my car. There is no comparison with the C43 exhaust though.

Right, that's why I'm going Prestige next time around. My wife's car has all the bells and whistles.

Yeah the seat vibration is a nice implementation. Left side vibrates if you're departing your lane to the left, right side vibrates if departing lane to the right( with no blinker), and whole seat vibrates if its the anti-collision alert. Whole seat vibrates too for parking assist.

Not sure if I like the vibrating steering wheel though just because it could cause unintentional steering inputs by the driver.

The first time I drove my dad's MKS, I kept commenting that he needed to take it back to the dealer for service because it really felt like he had a front wheel out of balance.

It turns out that it was the lane departure warning vibrating the steering wheel...

I’m not sure I’d like the vibrating system only because sometimes I’ll have th turn signal on when there is someone in my blind spot (I imagine it vibrates if the blind spot light is on and your turn signal). A warning beep in that case will suffice.

My girlfriend’s Volvo has BLIS (blind spot info system) and it does not give any feedback other than the light illuminating or flashing, which I find annoying. It would be nice to have audible feedback in addition to the flash as well as some other cars have, especially considering the light is somewhat dim, especially if there’s a glare on it. The light is also on the interior of the car’s A-pillar which I don’t think is as ideal as being on the exterior itself.

DT, when you say GC you mean...? I'm thinking BMW Gran Coupe, but I might be wrong here.

If I'm not mistaken, lane departure warning systems can be fine tuned in the settings of the vehicle.

[Jeep] Grand Cherokee, specifically an Overland with the High Altitude package :) See my many posts above about it, my ruminations about the Hemi option, etc :D

Pfft, should have known. I watched the Trackhawk review this morning. How soon I forget. :p

Very pretty! Sorta looks like Scotland countrysides. Didn't you and your wife honeymoon there? I remember someone saying they honeymooned there.

My favorite drive in the state is probably the coastal drive. We don't have really good twisties, which surprises a lot of people. I enjoyed driving in Vermont years ago. I had a decent fast rental and it was neat seeing leaves flying behind the car in the rear view mirror. Some of the middle states have some nice roads. We get a lot of tourists going to Mulholland, which is somewhat amusing in the sense that it's a pretty boring drive once you've driven it a couple thousand times in your life.

I am always tempted to take the Camaro down to the Tail of the Dragon. Haven't driven it yet, but I hear its a blast to drive. But it would be a 4 hour drive.... :(

We didn't. We went to Hawaii.

The problem with Crown Range was I was in a Rav4 rental. lol.

Want to try the twisted sisters in Texas, but I'm not sure I want to drive all the way out there.
