God help me if I go through a third mid-life crisis. Already seen the stuff my two work partners have bought over the years. Or to quote one of them, I complain and yet I have my eyes set on excess myself. I think a wagon is a perfectly fine vehicle and normal to drive.

Family eh? Is that a hint at something? :)
[doublepost=1530666921][/doublepost]That Aston is alright. Front end needs to be slimmer. Rear is nice but I get a strong Porsche vibe from it. Not liking that forged carbon fiber. Looks straight out of a Mansory catalog.

I think you’re reading too far into that comment.

Maybe it’s time for you to pick up an E-Class Wagon.

Im in the market for a new car right now. At the moment I think the XC60 T6 Inscription AWD is at the top of my list if I opt to go with a midsize SUV. It’s a good looking car, lots of available features, beautiful interior, etc. It’s also a nice car without wearing an overly ostentatious badge.

That said, I think I’d rather have a sedan, but my GF has an S60 and we’d like to have an SUV in the family. I’m not a huge Mercedes fan generally but I do really like the E400. In terms of midsize SUVs the F-Pace, Cayenne, and Range Rover Sport are also of interest. The latter two are pretty expensive though. Another part of me however wonders if I should just spend $35,000 or perhaps less on a high end CPO Grand Cherokee or Lexus IS.

My current car is a 2009 535i xDrive that is as a hand-me-down from my dad back in 2013. Now that it’s almost 10 years old and has well over 100k, it’s time to think about replacements. Ever since I threatened to replace it however it’s had virtually no issues. I guess that’s the way it works. At this point I’m kind of hanging on until the next big thing breaks. It’s otherwise in very good condition.
I'm going to get a new SUV by the end of summer but I don't know what. My list right now is the BMW X3 M40i Lexus GX 460 Dodge Durango R/T AWD and the Toyota 4Runner. This weekend I will hit up a few dealers nearby and look at these. My current car is in the shop every 6 months and that's too much especially how often it doesn't get driven

You know if you don't mind it, the new X4 is apparently pretty nice. The M40i version is apparently more brutal sounding than the X3 variant despite using the same modified B58 engine, IIRC. Plus you can strap on a Berger kit onto the X3 or X4...

I'm not a BMW person, and their driving ability has been neutered, but all I can say is that when I test-drove the new 5 series last year, I was amazed at the dynamics. It's not BMW of yesteryear, but it's still a fantastic machine. I don't know what BMW does, but even their new cars inspire more confidence than a MBZ, and I say that as a mild MBZholic.

We’ve been over this. No, the E400 sedan. Thought I did see an E63s sedan parked on the street that was very appealing.
Oh, right, I forgot. Someone else I know is looking into that, though. Appealing, yes, but I can't imagine being able to spread its wings in your region unless you tracked it.

I think these “Coupe” SUVs are terrible... X4, X6, GLE coupe, etc. I think they’re ugly, plus you lose functionality and they charge you a premium for it. Like the base GLC43 coupe costs literally $10k more than the standard GLE43 SUV.

BMWs have gone back to their roots in terms of dynamics. Owning an E60, a car with fantastic handling, I tested the F10 which was a bit disappointing in that regard. I’m happy I didn’t buy one too, they look pretty aged at this point even though the new model has only been out for a year or so.

I find it strange you refer to a Land Cruiser as a “small SUV”. With a few exceptions (ie the early Jeep-like models such as the J40), the Land Cruiser has always been considered a full size/large SUV. Certainly the “comfort-oriented” models- J50, J60, J80, J100, and J200 models would be considered full size SUVs.

Sure, your family’s 1996 J80 might be “smaller” compared to a lot of new SUV’s, cars tend to get bigger with time, but that’s still not a small car by any means. Forgoing the body on frame design tends to free up interior space. How do you classify a 1996 RAV4 or 4Runner if a 7-passenger Land Cruiser is small?

In the modern context, the Land Cruiser is still bigger than the 4Runner, Highlander, Rav4, and CHR...

The only car significantly bigger than a LC is a Suburban, but that’s really just an extended wheelbase Tahoe, which is also considered a full size SUV.

The 1996 Landcruiser is a mid-sized SUV—the only reason being because larger things, such as the Expedition (+ discontinued Excursion) and Suburban, exist.
[doublepost=1530671206][/doublepost]Interesting new Audi. Dashboards have become ultra sleek in recent years, but some of them are beginning to remind me of those of the 1980s. As clean as this looks, I can see it becoming outdated-feeling very quickly. (BTW, this Audi is set for 2020.)

It's the worst of all worlds. Commit, get a functional SUV, get a sedan, but for love of all that's holy, do not support these hideous abominations ...

By the typical metrics, it is a full size SUV.

1990-1997 LC

Wheelbase 112.2"
Length 189.8"

1995-1999 Tahoe

Wheelbase 111.5"
Length 188" or 199"

Yes, it's smaller than "super size" vehicles like the Suburban or Expedition, but it's also a fair bit larger than contemporary insurance-classed "Mid-Sized" SUVs like the Ford Explorer and Nissan Pathfinder.

Some people like it. I was merely suggesting. I haven't driven the F90 M5 yet. Though I suspect they're heavily backordered at this point. The G30 is a fine vehicle. Just wish it sounded better.

Obviously some people like them. I suppose that’s why the make them and people buy them. :p

That said, I feel like the people who buy 3 and 5-series GT’s must have been paid to drive them. Those things are hideous. Seriously why does BMW sell a 5GT in the US but not a 5-Wagon?

I agree. The iPad, for example, is very passe. What dinosaur would use it?!

As I've said in the past, they're not my style of vehicle. If others like it, so be it. I'd still recommend the designers be dragged out back and shot.

I would say for the same reason that Audi isn't bringing back their Avants. Low sales. MBZ only bothers because they have a niche market ready to snap them up.

The Land Cruiser has always been considered a full size SUV. The 4Runner was midsize. The RAV4 was small (a market that barely existed back then compared to today. Back in 1996 any SUV with 7+ passenger seating would have been considered full size. A Tahoe was considered Full Size as well and remember in in those days didn’t even offer a 3rd row.

My neighbor had a fourth of July block party bash yesterday and in his driveway, was his latest purchase of a Tesla model S 85D. Of course, I _had_ to drive it. :D [Photo’s below]

Allow me to pre-face by saying this is the first electric car that I have ever driven and first Tesla that I have ever experienced firsthand:

This vehicle does have a learning curve with all the media controls controlled by an “IPad” like display and Autonomous features, but seemed rather straight forward.

Immediate impressions were this vehicle has neck breaking speed like I have never experienced before, that will throw you back in your seat hard. It’s literally an entirely different spectrum of driving something like this with instant acceleration, given its completely battery powered. He (My Neighbor) initially took me for my first drive before allowing me to drive it, and without even telling me, went full throttle on the highway and it was literally startling how fast this thing is. (This was also without “Ludicrous mode”, which this model is not suited for.)

My first question to him, “Have you ever been legally stopped for speeding yet?” :D

Anyways, what’s really different about this Tesla Model, is when you let off the accelerator, if feels like there is a ‘rubber band effect’, where the vehicle has a lot of resistance like its trying to slow down, which you feel like you don’t need to apply that much brake pressure, its not very easy to describe, but just a *very* unique feeling compared to any other car I have driven.

The autonomous features are excellent. Everything the vehicle does is monitored and drives accordingly.

There are loads of vehicle customization features for the vehicle through the media display, which surprisingly is very intuitive and fluid, and even in the bright sunlight, there really wasn’t any issue with seeing fingerprints and glare. I think it’s the way the display was angled and with the coating. But almost everything is directly controlled through the display, aside from the Gear shifter on the right side of the column.

The interior quality was decent, but I don’t know that I thought it was “$90,000 quality”. The leather in the seats was adequate, the dash materials and doors had its plastic parts, it’s not something that I would remember during this entire experience. What I didn’t like, was in front of the center console, there is this ‘large plastic storage compartment’ where you can put things in, and you have to awkwardly reach down whatever that might be. Just seems very out of place. The seats are semi-comfortable, but again; for the price point of this vehicle, I would expect more personally.

I didn’t see any issues with the fit and finish of this vehicle, everything appeared well constructed (And no, there was no ‘Panel Gaps), there was no rattling or squeaks when driving. Also, it had Excellent sound deadening shielding From The outside ambience.

Is This something that I would consider purchasing in the future given Tesla and where electric is ultimately leaving? I don’t know. For $90,000, it was a very polarizing experience driving this vehicle, given that you do have the “Performance” [I use the quoted term loosely] aspect , mixed with some luxury and the battery charging requirements.

The one direct advantage my neighbor mentioned, was if there’s anything wrong with the vehicle, Tesla has a dispatch team that will come directly to his location to assess or make any necessary repairs.

Overall, criticism(s) aside, this was a really fun experience and I do think Tesla made a very nice car with 85D-S Model. Truthfully, I left driving this vehicle, wanting to come back and test drive it again sometime.

Only made in Germany. Maybe there's no Buick version without the ugly crossover look:

I will look at the X4 while I am at the dealer thanks for the recommendation

My parents have had MBZ for a while and they're great cars. I didn't like the GLC which is why I am looking at the X3

Nice dashboard which Audi is that?

I like wagons and the only one I have even seen lately is the Buick Regal TourX. If BMW sold a 5-Wagon in the US that had AWD I'd get one

I would have to think BMW could sell more wagons than their GT models.

I think there is a decent wagon market. Subaru does well with the Outback and Impreza wagon/hatchback. Volvo with the V60 and XC70/V90, Mercedes with the E-class wagon. Jaguar and Porsche are pushing high end, high price tag wagons themselves. The Golf Alltrack seems to be killing it.

In terms of luxury wagons, it seems to me to be most successful you either have to have a sporty version (like the AMG wagon) or have a sporty, rugged wagon like the Volvo Cross Countries and Audi Allroads. Volvo went through periods of selling non-Cross Country Wagons (sans the jacked up suspension, plastic fender flares, etc), but usually ends up dropping those in the American market as the Cross Countries do better. Back when Saab was in business, they sold some 9-5 wagons, but not a ton. When they came out with the AWD 9-3 wagon though, they sold a bunch.

I think Audi could easily sell an A6 Allroad. BMW might be able to have some success with an rugged 3 or 5 series wagon (xLine inspired?). So basically I think it’s a matter of making the right kind of wagon for the American market.

My mom has owned a number of wagons. I think she likes the car-like attributes but the utility of the wagon design. Her biggest gripe about her 2015 Allroad is that it’s too small- I think she would have bought an A6 Allroad had it been available in the US. She did originally go with the 2015 XC70 but it turned out to be a lemon. The original A6-based Allroad offered a lot of cool features not available in the A4 (V8 option, adjustable air suspension, low range transfer case option, etc). She had the 2.7t version which was a great car aside from its awful reliability.

She now has almost 90k miles on her 2015 Allroad and is apparently looking to replace it relatively soon. It sounds like she’s interested in the NX or RX as my parents seem to have fallen in love with the Lexus reliability and quality.

My girlfriend’s mom as I’ve mentioned has a 2012 or 2013 GX460 with something like 140-150k. They’re apparently buying a new Lexus RX450h hybrid. As of now it sounds like the plan is to keep the GX and replace their 3rd car, their 2001 Land Cruiser. It make sense considering the LC is old and her Dad has a Model S that has range limitations. Frankly I think her dad needs to trade in the Tesla for a Lexus LS hybrid.

If only they were available here so I could get one

We get some of them...

Golf Variant = Golf Sportwagen or Alltrak
3 series Touring
Volvo V60
I forgot the Golf Sportwagen was available here. The 3 series didn't click with me and I will look at the Volvo V60 when I look at the XC60 this weekend
[doublepost=1530720607][/doublepost]
I think you can get the expensive ones (this includes the Golf Variant).
That's how it is with most German manufactures where we can only get the expensive engines and trims and not the lower end variants available in Europe
