Really really wish they’d include a HDMI port as well, even if it’s limited to 4K, for connecting a game console…

I took one for the team and just ordered a Kuycon. $799 including the adjustable stand + $53 shipping. The Russian review above confirmed that it was a high quality LG panel inside, and the HDR mode was pretty good. 1 year warranty, and put it on my AMEX so in case there’s an issue during year 2, I’m sure they’d reimburse me.

Just received mine. See photos above. It’s slick. Lightning fast shipping through DHL from Hong Kong (~4 days, no tax or other issue). I paid extra to upgrade to the version with the holes in the back (similar to 32” XDR) for added ventilation and look. Also got the tilt and height adjustment stand, which looks nearly the same as the Apple version.

Need to set it to DCI-P3 initially or adjust the gamma immediately, or else it looks undersaturated. However, it calibrates well, and there are various adjustments for sharpness, black point, temperature and so on. The bezels are approximately 1cm, or about the height of the bottom bezel of the MacBook Air.

Comes with all cables, including a high quality USB-C 3.1 or 3.2 rated cable, HDMI, and DP cables, as well as VESA mount adapter which looks a lot like the Apple version. Tons of ports in back. Charges my laptop at full power. Comes with a remote control (!) for adjustment although there are buttons at the bottom of the screen.

Assembly quite easy, just one screw. Good finish. High quality display, glossy as I prefer it. No speakers or webcam, but the ASD webcam is potato quality anyway.

For much less than half the price of a similarly configured ASD (and also without tax), I am happy. The Samsung appears to have a thinner bezel, so that would have been my next option but it’s clearly unavailable.

Just added this to the table. Thanks for the information!

With the holes milled into the back, can you confirm that it actually has ventilation through them? (ie, it isn't just a non-functional cosmetic treatment)

On the very first pic of the back -- extreme top right, you can sort of see into the device (? presumably the panel or backlight?), so I presume it is actually a ventilation thing...

Thank you for the review. Can you share how long it takes to wake up the monitor after macOS goes to sleep? From reviews online they say it takes 5-10 seconds, which is much longer than around 1 second for Apple Studio Display.

I have 2 of these (the non-hole back version) and in my experience it depends on the firmware. Mine were on different firmware and one took 6 seconds, the other took 10-11 seconds. I updated both to the latest firmware and they both take 10 seconds to wake now. This is on an 2019 Intel MBP, but it was the same when using my windows desktop

just timed it, 4 seconds. I haven't updated any kind of firmware or anything

Thank you for sharing! very helpful. Kinda strange that the firmware update seems to make the delay longer.

Yeah I thought so as well. It might be possible to get the older firmware from the manufacturer, but I was unsuccessful when I tried. As a side note I’m not sure if @user314159 has the firmware with the menu rotation option, but that one was faster for me

How did you pay extra to upgrade to the version w/ holes in the back? I would like to do that, but don't see any option on clickclack.io. Perhaps you went elsewhere, or the option is gone now? Thanks

I want to see what the reviews and price of the Samsung S9 are, but I really think my future might be the Kuycon. Don't need speakers and I can get a really nice webcam and I really prefer glossy displays (having had iMacs for the past decade).

I'm also curious. I guess they must have ordered directly from Alibaba? If so, what was the shipping cost?

Same, or an LG Ultrafine model. I saw a leaked price that indicated the S9 would be around $1500. My biggest concern with the Kuycon is it not working in a few months after purchase. I saw some reddit thread where a user said it started glitching out after a few months.

The other concern I'd have with the Kuycon is that support is probably not going to be great. While it's a good deal more effort, I think that when factoring that in I'd rather do one of the driver board builds like seen in the other thread, where I at least know what components are being used, can ensure cooling is handled well, etc. A self-build may also be more easily repairable.

I'm not super keen on using an iMac enclosure though, with its bezels and huge chin. It'd be interesting to use a service like SendCutSend to get parts for a custom metal enclosure cut and bent, or alternatively use SendCutSend only for a minimal frame that 3D printed exterior parts can be bolted onto. With a larger resin printer one could do some cool stuff like colored translucent back housing for a classic iMac look.

It's tough, because there just isn't any data. Prior to this week when another member here got one, that Reddit user was literally the *only* user report on the Kuycon other than a few YouTube unboxing videos. So there is a report of a failure, but a sample size of just one? Statistically that's not enough to draw any meaningful conclusions from.

You would have to have at least some kind of thin strip at the bottom to manage the edges, because the iMac glass panel is rounded at the top but square cornered at the bottom...

That's if you use the iMac panel, there's also variants of the panel available for purchase that aren't laminated to glass and are just normal display panels as can be seen in the referenced thread.

I emailed them directly after I ordered, and they created an “invoice” for the upgrade which I then paid. Their customer service is quite responsive.

It took about 1-2 days for them to receive the “holes” version in their HK warehouse, and then they shipped by DHL and I got the monitor in 4 days (two boxes, one for stand one for monitor).

I definitely had to increase the brightness setting and gamma to make everything look correct. I left it on the default color setting rather than switch to DCI-P3, but I need to peruse the manual / details some more. The clickclack site has the manuals on it, and it does come with a USB stick which I haven’t yet explored (I assume with color profiles)

Of note, the USB hub on the back hasn’t worked for me, although I only tried plugging in an ancient PC USB keyboard, and haven’t played around with it.

Can you tell me more about the menu rotation option? What does it enable? My menu is really small and in the bottom right corner.

The actual monitor is relatively easy to rotate to portrait mode (like Pro Display XDR), but there is obviously no “sensing” of the orientation change that is passed along to the OS (so you just have to change it in display settings).

Is the USB hub working for you? I only tried with one (ancient) accessory which didn’t work.

Yeah the menu rotation option was supposed to be used to allow you to have the menu at the bottom of the screen regardless of the monitor’s physical orientation. Apparently it was buggy though so they removed it. One of my monitors came with the firmware with that option and I found that it woke significantly faster than the one that didn’t have it. Also, the USB drive will have a Firmware report that will tell you the firmware date if you are interested in that. As far as the USB hub, both of mine work as expected when connected via USB-C, they are both only USB 2.0 though.

Very surprised that I only heard of Kuycon G27X a moment ago. Because it appears that G27X has been selling for more than a year from my digging. I'm guessing its development perhaps was inspired by user enthusiasm shown in the 5K DIY thread. Smaller factories in China essentially have all the necessary components. Why not copy case design language and put everything together! My primary concerns are component quality & reliability of the whole thing. As usual only time will tell.

I'm sorry, I know the thread talks about 5K, but would you recommend me a good 27" 4K or is there some thread already discussing it?

I currently have an iMac 27" Late 2012 with 2560x1440px resolution and I wanted to see what it would mean for me to switch to Mac mini M2 Pro or Mac Studio 1/2.

Personally, from those who have always had iMacs, a 27" 5K monitor is out of my mind at an economic level. But I speak for myself.

So here I would like to understand what the market offers for 4K, I read a lot of Dell, LG, BenQ, but on a practical level I don't know what a cheap but quality model is.

You would be a good candidate for conversion of your 27” iMac into an external monitor for your new Mac. Plenty of threads on that as well, also on YouTube. It seemed pretty straightforward.

4K is a nonstarter for me (and I think most people here) because text scaling just looking horrible, there is no cleartype equivalent in MacOS.

Amazing to have all the 5k options in one place, well done to OP and thank you for the effort! I'm eagerly awaiting pricing, availability, and reviews of the S9. Fingers crossed.
