I have the 3G on order an am going to be out of town April 25-30. I am worried that it's going to ship right during that period. What are my options? Cancel and buy it when I get back or in the town I go to New Orleans (they have an Apple store near by), or re-route to a friend hoping they will be there? I wish we knew when this was going to drop! Its killin' me! How soon should we hear a ship date - this "late April" is terrible!

So if the prediction is right and the 3G model comes out on 23rd and if I decide to swap my wifi model with it, I'll be iPad-less for a week because I'll have to return it before 14 day return window closes.

Hmmmm. I still don't see the necessity of 3G for my use, but it is nice to have especially I don't have to pay for it until I need it. $130 + $50 restocking fee of 16gb wifi = $180 extra for 3G model. Hmmmm.

I think I'm going to get the 32gb 3G model, it's only $30 more then the 64gb wifi version.

I mainly want it to be able to be away from wifi and still get on the internet and have a dedicated GPS chip.

Return the one you bought from the Apple Store, buy one from Best Buy, return that one when 3G arrives. Problem solved.

I predict the 3G iPad will be available on Friday, April 23!

14 days to go!

(This countdown will be revised when we get a firm date from Apple. Which, hopefully, will be announced TODAY!)

Mark

Unfortunately, no 3G iPad shipping date announcement at today's iPhone OS 4.0 event. I'm sticking with my prediction of April 23.

Mark

I'm hoping that the 3G iPads are gonna be available at launch in the UK, that way I can go and get the experience of buying on (kinda) launch day and a 3G pad. Fingers crossed.

I hate to complain, because I really am genuinely excited about everything involving the iPad, including OS 4.0, which everybody seems to have some issues with. Apple has done a great job of pleasing us as consumers in the long run, and I am sure that in time the majority of people will be satisfied with the availability and function of certain features.

But this 3G waiting game is pretty ridiculous. I'm just not sure what Apple is trying to hide or trying to accomplish. Are they trying to make those of us that are inpatient buy two? It seems that there are a variety of ways to get around the "lack" of the 3G on the wifi version. now I find myself trying to decide whether I actually want to wait for the 3G version or if I should just save my money and wait for an inevitable upgrade. I'll end up keeping the 3G and waiting, but I just don't understand why Apple would make the individuals that paid more wait indefinitely. If I were AT&T I would sure be pissed. Instead of making money on the 3G model right now, folks are going and getting the Sprint Overdrive and foregoing interaction with AT&T all together. It's costing Apple and AT&T money. Just seems pointless. Why not hold off half a month and make a universal release date for both models? Apple already has a number of our dimes, why are they holding us over the coals, giving us blue balls? I know there are a variety of production factors and FCC approval factors that have likely slowed this process slightly. It just makes me feel like 3G integration was a last second thought, after they realized the wifi would inevitably be inferior.

I don't presume that the developers and market analysts that work for Apple are stupid. This release tactic is giving folks incentive to jailbreak their iPhone and go around Apple's money making racquet.

Of course this all stems from my extreme desire to just have my iPad, lol, so don't take my ranting to heart to much. Once I get mine I will retreat quietly to the corner to lick my wounds and try to forget how frustrated I was by this.

I just want a ship date. It doesn't seem like such a hard thing to announce unless you weren't sure you could actually stick to it. Which again begs the question, why wouldn't Apple release the 3G model if it was ready? Maybe it isn't, maybe they will scrap the 3G model til they upgrade and tell us April 30th to just go buy a wifi? I tell you what, heads will roll if that happens!

I just e-mailed Steve. Asked him for a specific date as opposed to the "time-frame" my order acknowledgement shows. We'll see if he responds. I'm not holding my breath.

Steve

Was debating the WiFi-3G thing and decided that the 3G was the way to go (not much of a debate), so I ordered the 64g today, bring it home Steveie!

I will give you a dollar if you e-mail Steve and ask him.

Steve

I E-mail Steve regularly (about once a month) to share my thoughts on hot topics. Steve has never replied personally, but three of my E-mails have generated replies from his subordinates.

Anyway, I already E-mailed Steve this morning to give him thumbs up for iPhone OS 4.0 and to express my disappointment that a date was not given for iPad 3G release. I doubt I'll get a reply but that won't stop me from sharing my thoughts in the future.

Please send the dollar! :)

Mark, thanks for emailing El Jobso. Keep us posted if you hear anything. Count me among those who were disappointed that a ship date was not announced.

Not to upset anyone, but a guy (EDIT: Apple Store employee, not just a random guy) at the Apple Store today said they were expected the 3G iPads in late April/early May. Yes, that's right, early May. He also said Apple would announce the date 3 weeks in advance of when they will ship, meaning April 29 is the earliest they would ship if the date had been announced today. Now, this guy might not have known anything, but I thought I'd share it just for interest's sake. Others should go to the Apple Store and ask about availability and see what they say.

Someone needs a hobby. If you need help and couldn’t get it through Apple’s regular support channels it’s one thing, but to e-mail him on a regular basis is another.

I’m sure you’re on his black list by now. Wow. Then again, I’m sure you’re not alone.

Sorry but I think the store employees get the same mushroom treatment that we're getting....keep us in the dark and feed us ********....or in this case....feed us nothing.:D

I actually e-mailed him this afternoon. Politely asked for a specific release date as opposed to the time range they were currently offering. Don't expect a response.

Since I grew some testicles and e-mailed him myself i don't feel I should have to pay up. But, if you feel you are owed I will send the dollar. Just send me a self addressed and stamped envelope and I will send it your way. :D

I found the gathering of the faithful......

Well, I feel like an addict that found his therapy group and finally feels at home. I just joined the forums about a week ago and do not know how in the world I have not come across this support group. My name is funky and I am an iPad 3G waiting addict........ *paused for group saying "Hi". Anyway, from that fateful day in late January when El Jobso made us all salivate with fondlage of his own iPad and when he announced a 3G version, I was instantly locked in. I locked my sights down and I'm in it to win it with you guys, I have my 64GB 3G on order and just waiting. I am so excited because I primarily use my iPhone 3GS for surfing and movies, etc (like the rest of everyone), so having a still very portable, faster, brighter, much more awesomer portable apple device with me at all times with 3G is the bees knees!!!

Anyway, just glad to know that I'm not alone checking constantly to see if they've announced the launch date. I am very inclined to agree with Mark and the 23rd or maybe even the 24th as they would surely benefit from another Saturday launch for 3G. Not to mention they continue to state that it's gonna be made available to the rest of the world that day. Why would they only release WiFi to the world on the 24th? They wouldn't, they're gonna release both, so then why wouldn't the psychotic pre-ordering faithful have theirs at least by that very date. Ok, I'll hang up and listen for your comments.

Any idea about the 3g plan..

I'd like to get it on my iPhone 3G(I WANT PAYG BAD).

Sorry for derailing, but it's sorta on topic.

If I can't, I may just get the 3g iPad. But I'd rather save the 129 and tether the signal from my always-cariable iPhone, rather than have it on the iPad which I can't ALWAYS carry.

Thanks! :)

I don't understand why they didn't just hold off and release both at the same time. It seems to me like more people would have ponied up the extra $130 for 3G if it were available. Their revenue would have been so much greater.

I'm already reading here and there of people who are trying to figure out how to return their WiFi Only devices w/o a restocking fee. Apple seems to have created a problem for themselves with impending returns.

Then they have the rest of us waiting and bothering Jobs with "When?" questions. That's got to be annoying.

I'd be amazed if they ever repeat this method again.

While I'm waiting for the 3G model, I don't consider myself more fortunate that the wi-fi only customers. GMAB!

I find it faintly amusing that all these hot and bothered people in here think Apple are even remotely bothered by the fact that the people waiting for the 3G are angry or upset or impatient or feel betrayed or let down or treated like second rate customers or anything whatsoever. Apple wanted to get the WiFi out to keep you all quiet, just be grateful for that. Now they're building their 3G models and accumulating stock for an international launch.

Good grief people, stop whatever you're doing and take a moment to look around. Find something more important to raise your blood pressure over than a piece of technology that WILL BE HERE SOON. In 2 months time you'll have had it for over a month and will have completely forgotten about how desperately you wanted it two months ago.

Seriously. Just chill out.

Thank goodness you came along, Owen. Man, what would we have done without you coming along to set us all straight?! Bless your heart.

I’m sure you’re on his black list by now. Wow. Then again, I’m sure you’re not alone.

I'm sure I'm not. My most recent contact from one of his subordinates was less than a month ago.

You all realize that very few of the E-mails ever make it directly to Steve, right? He has a staff that screens them for him.

Mark

Until Apple announces otherwise, I stand by my prediction of an April 23 availability date for the iPad 3G.

13 days to go.
