I definitely am confident it's the one that I want, I was just hesitant about the black strip at first. Now seeing Woz with it it looks actually quite nice, still not sold on it being visible from front, though.

Internet everywhere, such a nice feature. I'd enjoy it much better than if I was just limited to WiFi, but that's just me. I'm sure others will get on fine with WiFi.

I agree that the black stripe looks perfectly fine on the back of the iPad but looks quite out of place extending around to the front to replace part of the stainless steel bezel. But look at the bright side... That stripe of black plastic might not only be necessary for the cellular antenna, it might actually improve the WiFi performance and range. It seems a few of the WiFi-only iPad owners are having a bit of trouble with that.

If you haven't gone out and tested an iPad in person, you should do it. For me, the bezel completely disappears, and I just focus on the content. I'm sure it will be the same way, black strip along the top or no black strip.

+1

I think your focus stays on the content. I would wager that if someone handed you a 3G version that was already on, and you fooled around with it for an hour, and someone asked you which model it was, you would probably have to check to see if the stripe was there.

(Just a humble hypothesis based on my experience with it so far.)

I went to Bestbuy after work and checked one out for about 20 minutes. In complete honesty, I didn't even notice the bezel. Just the screen and the content.

I am now even way more excited for my 3g to come. If my BB hadn't been completely sold out I would have bought one and sold it when my 3g arrived...which is silly.

Even though I knew the dimensions it seemed smaller than I had imagined...this is a good thing. I completely see lugging this around in my messenger bag all the time.

Very cool stuff!

3G Countdown!

I predict the 3G iPad will be available on Friday, April 23. So, let's start the countdown to the 3G iPad:

17 days to go!

(This countdown will be revised when we get a firm date from Apple) :)

i basically bought the wifi version from Best buy. I'm going to return it on the 16th because there is NO RESTOCKING FEE.

I basically got a test run of the ipad. before putting my money down on the 3g

I sometimes find myself wishing I had waited and bought the 3G iPad but then I have to reassure myself that I have the ability to tether my jailbroken iPhone. Not as convenient, but I just don't have the extra cash to splurge on the monthly data fee.

The WiFi antenna is behind the APPLE Logo. It's plastic. It is the same idea on the 27-inch iMac. The Wireless antenna's are behind the plastic logo.

However told you this was misleading you. I spoke to the Apple sales rep and he confirmed it with a Best Buy employee and Manager who was hanging around the iPad display.

"This is considered a computer and therefore falls within the 14-day 15% restocking fee policy" -- BB Store Manager.

Hope you get lucky, unless of course, you never opened it. ;)

I've pre-ordered the 64GB 3G iPad. I will NOT be buying a WiFi-only model, just to sell it or return it when the 3G models arrive. I'm going to patiently wait for my 3G iPad and, by the time it arrives, the WiFi-only folks will have shaken the iPad down, figured out the best apps, decided on the best case(s), and generally saved me a bunch of hassle in getting the most out of my 3G iPad.

Anyone else with me on this plan? :)

Mark

I already have my iPad running on 3G and it will be running on 4G in a few months. I also paid about $300 less than you did, but have fun with that 3G ;)

No, you paid $130 less than I did. THAT's the price difference between the two models. And you didn't get a GPS in your iPad in the process. The GPS alone is worth the $130 as far as I'm concerned.

Ummm...you said you ordered a 64GB 3G model. Those are $829, I paid $499. You paid $329 more than I did. Unless of course you are making it up. How could you not know the price of what you ordered? I couldnt care less about GPS on my iPad. My phone is with me 24/7 and I have GPS on that.

This was quoted from best buy that all apple products from best buy get no restocking fee. Also the manager basically told me to mark it down meaning that if this policy has changed then I wouldn't get burned. I basically asked everyone and their moms

I hope you had them put that in writing, as otherwise don't be surprised to find out you'll have to pay a restocking fee.

just to be safe. I'll ask again tommorrow. The two people who were at the counter who vouched for this were told to put their names in the system for my transaction basically marking down that an employee from that store told me that its fine.

I used to work at Best Buy. Unless they changed their POS system which they've been using for the last several years, there is no way for employees to put information into it "for future reference".

Your best bet would be to get the GM to note something on your receipt, otherwise you're out of luck. Also, you might want to turn over that receipt and read it, since it most likely explains the return policy ;)

Apple can pre-sell as many as they want, even before receiving FCC approval. As long as Apple doesn't ship them before FCC approval, they are covered.

A device with cellular radios in it requires additional FCC testing vs. a device without cellular radios. I stand by my original premise... it takes longer for the 3G version to receive FCC approval.

Mark

Apple received FCC approval for both versions of the iPad weeks ago.

https://fjallfoss.fcc.gov/oetcf/eas...e=N&application_id=751625&fcc_id='BCG-E2328A’

Soon after pre-orders began on the Apple Store.

I too have thought that it can not be sold nor go on pre-sale before approval. It's the same thing with new ham radios. They can put it in the catalog if they want but cannot offer pre-sale.

So if this is true...there is some other reason that the 3G is not shipping? Parts?
Because they already have my money for a 64/3G.

Jobs said at the iPad revealing that the 3G model would take slightly more time to ship because it must go through a certification test with the carriers (thanks again, AT&T).

I just E-mailed Steve to ask why The Woz has his 3G iPad already and we don't! :)

Wozniak doesn’t have a 3G iPad (that we know of). There was an Apple engineer visiting the store that loaned his pre-release iPad 3G to Woz to try out in line.

As for whether or not the iPad 3G model will get better Wi-fi reception, according to the FCC documents, both Wi-fi antennas are in the same place as the Wi-fi only model.

Oh, I see, in a discussion of GPS and 3G, you are conveniently forgetting that your iPad has 16GB and my iPad has 64GB.

The discussion about the advantages of the 3G model has nothing do do with the amount of memory the 3G model has. I could have just as easily ordered a 16GB 3G model for $629. There... $130 difference. Are you happy now?

The only reason I didn't wait is I have a 3G iPhone if I need to check email away from my office. The 32Gig WiFi only iPad I bought is perfect for what I do at home and at work since there is wireless at both places, plus I didn't want to give AT&T any more money. But Mega Gratz to those of you getting the WiFi & 3G models.

I sure hope so. This is worse than waiting for Christmas when I was 6!
