Not even tempted and have no problem waiting for the 3G. For me, it's a no brainer. The problem with my iPhone being used as a back-up for non-wifi area is that, unlike most of you it seems, I use it as a PHONE. There is not a chance I could use it as a GPS, watch a movie, stream music, etc. because I rarely go 15 minutes without a call, text, etc.

I love my iPhone but with the exception of being on a plane, or being in bed late at night, I rarely get long sessions with it without being "reminded" that it is a phone and my main source of communication. The screen is also generally a compromise for reading, watching movies, etc. The iPad will finally allow me to enjoy some of these apps from anywhere with a LARGE screen and no constant phone interruption (big issue now, is people I could call back later, still interrupt the app). Another plus of the 3G model is use of ATT wifi locations, huge plus. Not to mention GPS type apps, and being able to start a streaming app at home on wifi, continue in your car without it stopping and reconnecting to wifi on the other end of your trip.

As for those waiting for Gen 2. We get it but please stop combing forums for the latest news and reviews just so you can post about how you are waiting for us to beta test it for you. You want one, you know, we know it, so accept it. Will the next one be better? You bet. But it's likely 6-12 months away and in 6-12 months I suspect a 64GB 3G version will still be worth at least $600. $1.25 a day for a device most of use will use several hours a day is retarded cheap. I suspect I'm looking at "renting" this thing for about $0.25 an hour until I buy the new an improved version when it comes along.

If you really can't afford it now, wait until the end of May and start refreshing the apple store. Refurbs will start landing at 15-20% off.

ash =o)
Sometimes I just hate the iPhone at night. Just like last night. Someone called me two times at 3 AM! I mean, I'm sleeping come on!

Ontopic:
I'm getting the 3G to be sure I have an internet connection everywhere!
So if I go to the beach for a day, I just get a prepaid sim card and put it in so I can go and browse the web. And of course GPS.

And the black strip just shows that you've got the higher end model! :D

so lonely and cold. so lonely and cold

anyway the black bar looks really good in real life
He's just laughing at us. But is it just me, or does the black strip seems to fit very nice onto the iPad? I thought it would stick out a bit, but it's very smooth...

I just E-mailed Steve to ask why The Woz has his 3G iPad already and we don't! :)

I was glad I passed on 2 times to change my mind! I just got back from BB in Downers Grove, IL and the Apple store in Oakbrook, IL. Both locations still had supplies of all the storage sizes. I was hoping they were sold out so I would not be tempted, but I stood my ground.

I went to BB first. That was the best experience of the two as it was not as mobbed as the Apple store. I got about 15 minutes or a bit more with the iPad and it's everything everyone has said. What a device! I got a chance to check out everything I wanted to on it and it's very fast indeed!

I stopped at the mob scene over at Apple after that. I could not even get inside the store. It was way too hot in there anyways. I stood outside as part of a group getting a demo. I looked around and there 2 other Apple people doing demos right in front of the store. There was a crowd around all of them! People of all ages were viewing the demos.

Both locations had supplies left and this was around 4 to 5pm local time. I was tempted twice but really realized how much cooler it will be to have the internet, Mobile Me, etc. available to me wherever I go. That is why I did not fall victim and pick up one and cancel my 3G order.

I sure think this is going to be a big hit product!

I went to Costco today to pick up a new bluetooth headset (love the flip out motorola ones) and of course how could I not walk a 100 feet over to the BB right next door on ipad launch day.

I played with the 16 GB model at Best Buy Los Feliz CA. Spent a good 20 minutes with it and then walked around the store for 10 minutes trying to talk myself out of buying one now. BB employees were out in force selling the ipads. They were armed with microfiber cloths and Monster screen cleaner and were dutifully wiping down the screens between users. Even the Verizon girl was hovering around trying to sell that 3g wireless gadget to potential ipad buyers. I was surprised to hear they still had 32 and 64 GB in stock. (first BB person told me no 16 GB models but later another BB employee said they do have 16 GBs in stock.)

I came close to buying either a 32 or 64 GB ipad at BB today even though I have a 64 GB 3G on order (ordered first day it was available for pre-order). I really wanted it but somehow managed to walk away empty handed.

To satiate myself I went home and ordered $100 worth of ipad accessories and an additional 3G model as a gift.:D

Waiting for 3G model here too, probably 32GB.

I think Apple released the WiFi model first in order to showcase the excellent battery life of the device. They were both approved by the FCC at the same time.

I walked into the Reston, Va. Apple Store at 2:55p and walked out with a 16GB wifi about 10 minutes later. I still have my 16GB 3G model on pre order as well. I'm such a sucker for Apple. after spending several hours with this device today, I can say the 3G will be even better. I'll probably either give this one to my wife to replace her Kindle, or sell it.

Initially I wanted to hold out for the 3G iPad... but now that the Wifi is out... who really needs 3G anyways.... argh! the pressure!

I was on the fence about the WiFi or the 3G+WiFi until today.

I just read the entire 30+ page thread about everyone receiving theirs and how thrilled & excited they all are and it convinced me that if I only get the WiFi version I will regret it.

I use the internet A LOT and I just know I'll want to take the iPad with me everywhere--and why not???

So tonight I pre-ordered the 3G+WiFi with 64 gigs! :D

"Late April" cannot get here soon enough, but I know that good things come to those who wait. We won't regret it. I promise you all. ;)

Just knowing I have one ordered now makes me feel so much better. I'm glad I waited until today, and I hope that means I don't have to wait longer than the rest of you who pre-ordered weeks ago.

Heck...I may even sell my 3GS and go back to my original and beloved 2G iPhone--no sense carrying around a 3GS and an 3G+WiFi iPad, is there? For the times when I can't take the iPad I'll just "suffer" using the Edge. And how I miss my metal-backed iPhone. I'm glad I kept it!

I wonder how long it will take for the "I should have waited for the 3G+WiFi thread to appear."

I knew from the start that I would wait for the 3G as I don't have an iPhone or any other smartphone. I can't wait to be "connected" everywhere.

Then yesterday happened & I got all caught up in the hoopla and was tempted to go to my Apple Store, which is only 10 minutes away, to get the WiFi iPad. I even posted a thread asking if it would be "dicky" to buy one now and return it in 14 days, paying what would be a 10% "Rental Fee"; $25/week. I got through the temptation to do so.

It's happening again today. Oh Apple... why must you tempt me so?

Those with excessively impulsive disorders might want to talk to their doctors about medication! :D

I have no impulse to go and buy the WiFi-only model. Sure, it's bugging me that so many are getting to play with their new toys while I'm still waiting on mine. But there are VERY good logical reasons I am waiting. So it is entirely illogical that I would buy the inferior product to tide me over. No, it's beyond illogical..... it would be stupid.

Stick with logic and save the emotion of owning the iPad for the day when you can have the one you truly want. The anticipation will be worth it. Consider it 3-4 weeks of foreplay. :)

Wow, that's a lot of foreplay!

My iPhone will substitute as my mini-iPad for now, as it has been for the last 3 years. 3 to 4 more weeks is nothing.

I'm waiting too. Didn't even pre-order since I'm too broke to not use this time to save for it lol. The main reason I want this is for travel so the 3G is a must. I was originally going to get a kindle and tote that around WITH my macbook but the ipad seems like a great solution to free up some room in my carry on. I also want the storage of the 64g so I'm willing to wait and save up for that so I can have a nice entertainment library with me at all times :D.

I've changed the automatic signature line for email on my iPhone to read:

"Sent from Mark's mini iPad"

WAITING STINKS.

I wish they would announce the exact date they'll be shipping. This is so too suspenseful. Typical Apple.

I came real close to going into Apple or Bestbuy today to buy a wifi model. Then I would have gone home and cancelled my 3g preorder.

The only little thing stopping me....the somsabiches aren't open. :-(

I see this as a sign from Steve that I am destined to wait. :)

I'm torn. I played with my pastor's iPad today and it wasn't that bad. Typing in landscape wasn't bad but I don't like hovering my hands...

Anyway, I know I wouldn't like the WiFi only model because while he was telling us how great the battery was and how the speaker worked he said 'I have no music on it though.' So I said to 'pull up youtube' and he goes 'can't, no wifi.' :(

I'm too accustomed to having internet access at all times. WTH good is this thing with no internet? So 3G version here I come..... eventually. ;)

Hang in there fellow 3G iPad devotees! You've all said it very well... What good is an internet device if it doesn't have a constant internet connection?!

Our patience will be rewarded with the Black Racing Stripe version!

My wife and I stopped in at a Best Buy today to play with the iPad. VERY nice! :D The UI is just different enough from the iPhone that it took a little getting used to. Particularly the keyboard, which is just different enough from the iPhone keyboard that it feels "wrong". My brain will adjust, I'm sure.

I was very impressed with how zippy it felt, particularly compared to my iPhone 3GS. Common apps open very quickly and the extra screen real estate is very nice! Apple's apps do a great job of using that extra screen real estate to good advantage.

Two things of note...

1) It felt light when I first picked it up but after 4-5 minutes of use the arthritic thumb joint in my left hand started complaining. By the end of the 20 minutes of playing, it felt downright heavy. But I don't expect to hold it that way for long periods so it shouldn't be an issue in real world use.

2) Movies and photos look absolutely amazing on the iPad's screen! Photos were rich and vibrant! "Stunning" is the best word! I'm a photographer and I'm planning to keep my portfolio on my iPad. I can't wait to use it to show off my work! Every photographer will want to consider an iPad as means of carrying and displaying their photos!

I didn't feel inclined whatsoever to buy one of the WiFi-only models. Ridiculous to even consider it since having a full-time internet connection wherever I go is a must! Plus then there's that GPS too! :)

Keep the faith 3G iPad devotees! Our day will come!

FearlessFreep, the Reston store is my local store as well, and I spend a fair amount of time drinking beer and reading my Kindle at the Uno's right across from it. When I mention taking the iPad out somewhere without wifi and using it for several hours, that's the prime location I have in mind. Though lately, I can sometimes pick up wifi from there. I avoided going into the Apple store because I feared mob scenes. But I did go past after drinking some beer and gaze upon it through the storefront window. Looks nicer than I expected, and I expected it to be very nice.
