I am still officially waiting for delivery of my 64gb, but I went in to bestbuy and decided to pick up one for the wife after touching the store display. This thing is pretty outstanding. FAST.

Who said it is rare to see someone from Lex, KY! I am also here in the Hamburg area. However, I have to wait a few more weeks since I ordered the 3g model. I am on my way to the main best buy store to play with the wifi model! :D

Lexington, represent!

With the included 10-watt USB power adapter, it charges awake or asleep. On high-powered USB ports such as most recent Macs and the iPhone power adapter, it charges as well, though more slowly, according to Apple. On Macs and PCs without high-powered USB ports, the iPad will charge when it's sleeping, but when it's awake it will display that "Not Charging" message in the status bar at the top of the screen.

LOL I never thought i would want one of these things. I thought they were just going to be big lame Ipod touches, but damn all this excitement is making me quite GREEN :D. Maybe i might have to get one in a week or two when i wont be trample in the apple store.

Lucky people :p.

If you want to wait, DO NOT go look at one. Trust me :)

What the hell? How about plugging it via the included charger? Can you use it when you're plugged in?

Yeah I think it's a cross between the lowered powered USB ports and the juice the screen uses.

Which just seems silly that the screen would have to be off but I guess it can soak up that much power.

Yes, you can use it while it's plugged into the wall and it charges. I think Apple sells a longer charger and cord as well.

This is my first post from the iPad. Whoever's been complaining about typing on this keyboard must have giant hot dog fingers, because I'm flying on this thing.

I heart this post. Thanks for your take. Enjoy it...

I just received mine at home, haven't opened the package yet - even the UPS guy was excited about it as he told me smiling that I was one of the first on his route to receive it. Silly stuff, but undeniably fun - even in my 30s. :)

Regarding charging via USB to the computer....

Folks, the iPad will want to suck the FULL 500 milliamps (.5 amp) your computer's USB port can supply.

Mark

Do the math. 10W (the amount from the iPad power adapter) at 5V from USB requires 2 amps (Power / Voltage = Amps). A standard 500mA USB port can only provide 2.5W or one quarter (25%) of that. This is why charging from the PC is so flakey and likely requires the iPad display to be off or to be in "sleep" mode (power button off).

I read somewhere that Apple was building its Macs with "high power" USB ports, but I don't know how much more power/current they can source.

Anyone?

Actually, I think the problem is that it wants more than 500mA. It's got a big display to power. You couldn't power+charge a netbook from a USB plug, makes sense you can't do it with the iPad either.

It's supposed to be a quasi-laptop, right?

Regarding charging via USB to the computer....

Folks, the iPad will want to suck the FULL 500 milliamps (.5 amp) your computer's USB port can supply. Unfortunately, the following USB ports might not be able to supply the necessary current:

• USB Hubs
• USB ports on keyboards
• USB ports on displays or monitors
• USB extension cables over 20' in length

From experience with other high current draw USB devices, even if USB ports on the above devices work one time, it doesn't mean they will work every time.

Your best bet is to always plug the iPad directly into your computer's motherboard.

Oh... BTW... It is also my experience that some inexpensive laptops don't have any USB ports that can supply a consistent 500 milliamps. In those cases, you can sometime achieve success using a POWERED USB Hub. Sometimes.

Instead of buying the expensive in-wall solution to add two USB power ports, I opted for one of these from Belkin:

FANTASTIC for traveling! How many times have you been in a hotel where you could barely find ONE available power outlet? Thanks to the Belkin adapter, I can power THREE 120v devices and TWO USB devices off a single power outlet.

I have one of those . . . very cool too

The perfect bathroom browser :D......seriously, after I got over the fact that it wasn't a "proper" computer or content creation device.....I now appreciate it as a convenient entertainment device.

It DOES want more than 500mA! But that's all your computer's USB port is going to supply! And that's my point.... 500mA will be enough for it to operate and show charging with the display on. Barely. Any USB port delivering less than that will be a problem.

I can haz iPad? UPS showed up @ 10:25AM.:D

Kudos to Big Brown for handling the launch.
