The point is that you can have the iPad charging through the pass through on the keyboard, and use the iPad USB for something like a hard drive, etc.

This 👆🏻

Two ports is better than one and you now have the option to charge from either side too which is nice.

I’d been doing it this way for a day or so, and then I saw someone made a gif of it! (Credit to some thread, maybe this one, on this forum who linked it originally)

Unrelated, but this shortcut linked 3/4 through a Macstories article is useful, widget to take you directly to keyboard brightness settings. Useful for quickly changing brightness. Likely already been posted here and there, but useful if you missed it;

I love that way of opening it actually!! I’m interested to see how most users end up doing it after months and months of using it. So I guess time will tell

And thank you for this article! Added the shortcut to my widgets and now I’ll never look back. Any more ideas for shortcuts that might be useful for Pro users?

You can only change the modifier keys. There is no ”create your own keyboard shortcuts” like there is on the Mac.

It’s not very intuitive (or easy) to open it. If you try to open it like you would a laptop, prepare to be confused. For one, if you have the Pencil attached to your keyboard then it’s right in the way of where you use your thumb, and if the pencil isn’t there then your thumb slides right off or pushes the whole package backward. I place both index fingers on the sides of the iPad and lift.

Such a shame really but hopefully iPadOS 14 has a more improved/refined system for trackpad and keyboard use.

Is anybody finding Excel to be really buggy with the keyboard? I’m having trouble with typing and cursor clicks not being recognised. Only way to fix it is to kill the app and go back in.
That was a problem with Excel for iPad with the folio keyboard as well. I have to bring up the software keyboard in Excel all the time or restart the app. It’s a pain and MS really needs to fix it.

Couple of questions for y'all:

1) is there any way to change it so cmd Tilda is escape instead of cmd period?
2) what's the best way of opening the iPad and case combo?
No. You can change the caps lock, globe, control, option, and cmd keys to something else, but not the tilde key.

Is anyone else experiencing some apps where the keyboard stops working. For me, everyone once in a while in Facebook Messenger app, when I type, nothing will show up. The only way to fix it is to force quit the app, and then it works again. It also happened while typing in some forms on a webpage in safari. The odd thing is that in each instance, the trackpad continues to work, but the typing keys do not.

I'm getting an annoying glitch when I use the keyboard with Apple's Numbers (Excel alternative) app. It happens maybe 25% of the time, but when I type something in a cell, the software keyboard pops up for a sec and drops back down after realizing I have a hardware keyboard attached. Can anyone test this and see if they can duplicate the result?

Excel works just fine but Microsoft hasn't updated their app to be work with new trackpad features.

Mine seems to be getting really grotty already just from the oils on the skin. Particularly the outside, I’ve tried wiping it with a damp microfibre cloth but I can see this thing getting pretty gross quickly. Hopefully someone comes out with a skin for it.
It’s a shame. By all accounts the MK has very good ‘bones’, but the exterior finish and the lack of adequate protection against spills/crumbs/dust (relative to a tight fitting laptop clamshell design) makes the end product feel more disposable than I’d like. That was borderline acceptable for the the price of the SKF, but a tough pill to swallow for $300...

Come on Apple, is absolute perfection really too much to ask? 🙃

The shortcut app widget has been extremely helpful. @eninety made a really nice keyboard brightness Shortcut too!

Plus, you can simply ask Siri to “open hardware keyboard settings.” That brings you to the keyboard brightness slider. Super easy!

My 2013 MBP keyboard, whilst not exactly the same, still works perfectly. I’m not reckless with it, munching biscuits directly over it or something equally idiotic, but I’ve never babied it either. Point is, I don’t think scissor switch keyboards are remotely as sensitive to crumbs etc as the terrible butterfly switches that Apple persisted with for far too long.

I‘ve been using Siri today to do stuff and wish there was a way for it to work in a minimal mode like on macOS where it just overlays the current window at the top right like a notification instead of taking over the whole screen. I know that’s not how iPadOS works with multitasking but think it would be an improvement.

I had this earlier today using FB Messenger app. I both closed the app and turned iPad Pro 11 off/on and neither would resolve the issue and allow me to type via MKB.

I removed iPP from MKB and reseated it and voila! It then worked fine..!

+1. I’m ”hoping” the exterior finish is a bit more durable than the SKF. I’ve only had mine for a day so hard to tell. To me the exterior material ”seems” a bit different...a bit more durable...but time will tell. I’m already seeing the Magic Keyboard 2 with a nice leather or some other premium material...perhaps colors!! They’ve definitely left the door open for that improvement.

I’ve got the 2018 15 inch MBP with the “old” keyboard design. I haven’t seen/used the keyboard on the newer MB’s. Are they more “resistant“ to spills/crumbs/dust than the Magic keyboard case? Perhaps another MKC2 improvement if so!!

Besides these two points...I‘m really liking the Magic Keyboard case. I‘ve already forgotten (literally) how I used to scroll through web pages. Did I actually reach up and touch the screen? The integrated trackpad is the real “game changer” IMHO:)

One thing I appreciate about the old Smart Keyboard folio is the completely covered design which makes it the perfect kitchen companion/cookbook. Since the Magic Keyboard is similar to a traditional laptop keyboard I'm hard pressed to want to use it in the kitchen while gathering ingredients.

Well the membrane keyboard of the older style offers spill and crumb protection. I do find myself napping on the old style vs the new Magic if couch snacking is involved😁
