I came here to ask if Tap to Click is even possible and happy to hear that it is. How is it?

It works just as you’d expect it to on any Mac trackpad which is good.

Sitting in bed this morning doing work with it on my lap and its incredibly stable.

So far I think its a great purchase, my only annoyances are the lack of function keys - hopefully re-mapping keys will be possible in iPadOS 14? And some concern over durability and markings on the case - if I do keep this, I probably will put stickers on the case as that will at least hide any dirt and oily residue from hands.

I've never understood the point of a backlit keypad. Don't get me wrong it looks nice but other than that it serves no practical purpose. You should be looking at the screen when typing not the keyboard.

I have never had a need for a backlit keyboard either, but that’s mainly because I have never had to type in a situation where it was so dark that I couldn’t see the keys in front of me. But many people evidently swear by them, so...

Am I only one that finds drawing/writing with Apple Pencil with the iPad case as far ack as possible works nicely? Just rest my arms on keyboard and palm on screen, doesnt ache for me and works well *shrugs*

It would’ve been nice if they allowed the secondary hinge to fold back further so that you could fold it into a writing position by closing the primary hinge and opening the secondary hinge.

Has anyone with the new MK found that their iPad displays ‘Not charging’ when the keyboard is connected to a power source via the pass-through USB-C port?

Depends what I’ve connected it to. Directly to a wall socket fine. I tried using the usb on my surface dock and it didn’t;t work. I then tried a speaker I would normally use but that didn’t work.

Same here, and I’ve been pointing this out in many threads. Not many seem to be catching on. I have been using my iPad on a metal stand next to my work computer as an accessory digital notebook for a long time now, but this has always been a bit of a pain because it required removing or folding back the keyboard. With this keyboard, I can take notes right on the screen. It’s not perfect, but it’s entirely passable. But I’m perfectly ok, prefer in fact, to take my notes in a more upright position than leaving it flat on the desk.

It would’ve been nice if they allowed the secondary hinge to fold back further so that you could fold it into a writing position by closing the primary hinge and opening the secondary hinge.

I can’t see how they could accommodate that without upsetting the weight balance in the primary typing positions. There is a hard stop at maximum angle because any further back and it would start to tip over.

Received my 12.9" today and after a very short time with it I'm generally impressed. A couple of minor gripes however. The keyboard generally feels a little cramped to work on. I'm not sure whether this is because the width of the keyboard is narrower than an equivalent MacBook one, or whether it's just the smaller handrest and trackpad. Another possible reason it feels this way to me might be because of my other gripe: my fingers bumping against the bottom of my iPad suspended over the keyboard as I type.

I first encountered this with the iPad positioned at an angle where its base juts out most and quickly I realised I could not work at all with it in this position. So I straighten the iPad on its base so its closer to a 90% angle to the keyboard and that does improve the situation, but not totally - my typing figures still occasionally touching the iPad.

So yes, a little cramped.

I am loving everything about the Magic Keyboard, but like others have mentioned the missing function keys are a real annoyance.

I´m miss to control the YouTube-App with „Space“ and „arrow keys“ (only cursor is working)
But Youtube directly with Safari works fine with „Space“ and the arrow keys

@ Google - please!!!

Yea it has to be the app since with the MK I can do that on Amazon Prime Video for example.

Ive been using the 11’’ iPP and MK heavily for day and it’s a mixed bag for me.

Pros:
  1. It’s well built
  2. They keys have a nice click and good travel to them. In fact, they are nicer than the new 2020 MBA
  3. Viewing angles are nice
  4. It’s balanced, doesn’t feel like it will topple over
  5. Trackpad is solid and nice click to it throughout the entire surface.
  6. The magnetic are strong and your iPP will to fall over
  7. The mouse is awesome however I turned off “intertia” bc that didn’t feel natural.
  8. First time using a touch screen + keyboard and Apple is on crack. This needs to be a thing.
Cons

  1. My fingers hit the iPP when it’s fully tilted back While typing. That sucks, as I lose that angle. Might be a 11’’ problem curious to see if any 12.9inchers notice the same.
  2. There is no ESC key....wtf! I went thru this with the 2018 MBP and hated. I used modifier keys to bind caps lock to ESC and its ok but makes it weird when switching between a full keyboard and the MK
  3. Function keys are missed - many times I looked to change volume, change brightness etc.
  4. Expensive, I’d say its worth 200ish - 300 is a bit much for the short comings you get.
  5. Can’t open with one hand- saw the video in the post above, will try that out.
  6. Doesn’t fold all the way back to use in tablet mode - this one didn’t bother me as much. You can flip the iPP and MK upside down/reverse so that the keyboard props up like its the screen and the screen sits as if it’s the keyboard and you can use the AP to draw etc.

Overall, I’m going to probably keep it bc I’m a early adopter junkie but I’d caution those that think this can become your replacement laptop, at least on the 11’’ bc of the cramped typing area. I cannot see myself typing on this keyboard all day while having my fingers hit the iPP screen.

Can any of the 12.9ers confirm that they have more space?

Yeah, I’ve been wondering if this is possible too, although I was imagining it with the back of the iPad (the back of the keyboard) being flat on the table and the keyboard part vertical. I thought that it wouldn’t be at a right angle though. So if the bend in the back of the keyboard could be used and the iPad on more of an angle, like in the above video, then that would help with keeping the keyboard more out of the way than what I was imagining.
One of the video reviews shows the MK upside down for this purpose. Didn't look like the most comfortable position, but in a pinch...

I have the 11” but haven’t noticed my fingers hitting the edge. I suspect it’s going to be a “your mileage may vary” kind of a thing.

Command-period (cmd-.) should function as an escape key alternative in many instances.

About the escape key - you can turn the globe button into the escape key in the settings. You might have to go digging a little, but it is possible and something that I have done.

Yes you can. I ended up binding it to the caps lock key. There are a few others you can modify too

Few more tidbits - people weren’t joking that this thing is heavy. That has its own pros and cons. I wish it was a tad lighter or for the weight it came with a built in battery to add more juice to the iPad.

I keep trying to use my finger for touchID even with FaceID haha. Sure that will just take some time to adjust.

I don’t know if its been answered before, but its Hard to know with videos. Is the iPad more centred in our eyes now? One thing I really don’t like with the Smart Keyboard folio is that I have to look down and its really not confortable after a short While.

Also, is the typing experience similar to a real magic keyboard? I never used a MacBook so I can’t have an idea of how the typing is on this one.
