I think I’m different to most. I don’t get the opportunity to travel often (pre Covid), less so now. The thought of going somewhere and not having my best camera, lenses and filters with me horrifies me. Why would I want to not take my best?
I'm on completely the other end of the spectrum. Most of my trips are on a motorcycle, loaded with camping gear and seeking places off road and in the elements. I bought a pelican case to carry my dslr but it just wasn't worth the trouble. Next I carried my P+S, I attached a lanyard to the tripod mount and kept it around my neck tucked inside my jacket to be able to pull out quickly........In the end I ditched it all for the phone. It was too much to manage keeping everything charged and protected. On those kinds of trips, simplicity is one of the goals. Im already carrying a hardwired gps, a Garmin inreach, and my phone.

Part of the "hobby" is looking at, acquiring, and using new gear and I do miss that side of it, but travel and life in general hasn't made toting around photo specific gear worthwhile for me personally. I am certainly glad some of you folks do however as I peruse the various photo threads and forums.

I haven't traveled in over a year now but when I DO hit the road, depending upon the situation I take at least one camera, but often two. If the primary purpose of the journey is to meet up with friends and attend a concert, I generally take my small compact RX100 M7, as it easily tucks into the larger purse I use for trips, and I have it with me for taking photos when the occasion arises. Some concerts we've been allowed to take photos and the RX100 M7 is much better for that than my iPhone. Other concerts photography isn't permitted at all, and that's fine, too, but I usually can shoot some around the theatre, exterior and interior, and occasionally at the stage door after the concert.

Other trips have been longer in length and offer more opportunities for photography, and in the past I've taken the RX100 M7 and its big sister the RX10 M4. Both are ideal travel cameras, especially when going to places where I'm not sure what the situation will be and if I'll be carrying the gear around with me all day. In fact it was because of one such trip that I discovered and bought the RX10 in the first place, and that turned into gradually easing me back into photography in a way that I hadn't been doing for a while due to burnout.

I haven't yet taken the A7R IV on a trip yet since I bought it in November of 2019 and of course it wasn't all that long afterward that 2020 and with it, COVID-19 arrived, so that camera has been used primarily around home and local environs. Now that things are beginning to open up again I am looking forward to hitting the road at some point with my gear and seeing what all there is out there to shoot.....

If I'm traveling by car , and it's for more than an overnight to visit family , I'll load up with gear , cuz ya never know . If I'm flying , then it's gotta be limited to the contents of either a Bilingham 335 ( somewhat abused eBay score) or a Domke F4AF . Either way , camera w/ standard zoom , a wide zoom , and a tele zoom , plus either a 35/2 or equivalent , or something for night sky photography . Plus a RX100/3 .That's about all I'm willing to haul through an airport.

I still have my Domke bags and still use them -- they work just as well for my digital gear as they did for the heavier, larger SLR bodies. I like them because they don't scream "CAMERA BAG! EXPENSIVE GEAR INSIDE!" to the uninitiated and they don't have a lot of gewgaws and so much padding that there is no room for much of anything. The canvas is soft and flexible and comfortable to carry, too. I love my Domkes!!

I have a Domke too for the E-10 that was just returned, a little dirty, not sure if I can wash it, but will try by hand.

I've washed mine a number of times , just remove the bottom board and inserts , along with anything else detachable , and drop it into the washer . No problems save for the clips and other metal stuff making a lot of noise in the dryer . I'm assuming its not one of the waxed canvas or nylon ones ; don't think nylon or the waxed canvas would do well in the wash , let alone the dryer . Just be advised that the black color canvas can come out looking sorta faded and a bit ratty ( or possessed of 'patina' ) . Don't think I'd use bleach either .

One thing I rather like about my Domke bags is that over the years they have indeed developed that "sorta faded and a bit ratty" looking appearance -- indeed, a lovely patina reflecting their frequent use and the love attached to them! :D

Haven't ever tried tossing any of mine into the washing machine and dryer but, yeah, I can see how when taking out all the bits that would be problematic that this could work well.

I don't care much for the newer nylon or waxed canvas bags -- I love my oldies-but-still-very-much-goodies in the original basic canvas! Over the years I've bought and tried various other bags but I keep going back to my lovely Domkes that have been with me a long time and which have transported and held various cameras and lenses as they accompanied me through those years......

As I alluded to earlier, that somewhat ratty looking appearance definitely is useful when out-and-about, especially in an unfamiliar area, so that onlookers may take a glance at the bag dangling from my shoulder, shrug and think, "yuck, what a crappy looking bag!" and move right along, not realizing that said bag may contain some very cherished and rather expensive gear! I'm not interested in making a fashion statement or carrying a camera bag that looks cute or pretty or whatever. I want my bags to be functional all the way.

Yes, most important to me is the ease with which I can quickly reach into the bag and grab what I need and start shooting, or readily swap lenses in a hurry when the situation arises. That, along with the comfort level and the totally innocuous appearance of these things, is what makes me continue to love and use my Domke bags......

Back years ago when I first got into this, I started with slick, shiny Lowepro bags. Now, I feel like Lowepro stuff is definitely down a notch in quality, and they've discontinued my old favorite designs.

I use to always buy bags new(they were the only thing where I really did) but have come around to used. I REALLY like my Domke F2X, and it's a super roomy bag that like you all said doesn't scream "Camera bag"

Tanagra (not really)
Actually, - to my mind - that is not the takeaway lesson.

From what I can gather, the takeaway lesson is if you ask for help and advice, then don't dismiss the advice (and those who have tendered it), while making it more than abundantly clear that you have no intention whatsoever of taking any of the advice or helpful suggestions offered.
Oh, I know. I've said as much in one of the many previous threads just like this one, but they all seem to go the same way. I might as well be debating digital photography topics with my cat. Instead I just throw a bit of humor in there since logic and facts don't matter.

Some photographers may want to have more options, using digital at times and using film at times; each has a different approach in many ways, and for those who want to print fine art photos, often film is still the method of choice. Both offer opportunities for exploration and creativity and that is much of the value of photography as an art as well as a science.

Exactly. Painters have oils, watercolours, spray paint (ok that one is a stretch) so we can have Film and digital in varying formats and sensor sizes. Variety is the spice of life.
