Oooo, a very good point you make there. I'm don't edit photos but if anything, I use my laptop to record music covers which I do. Thank you very much for the feedback! I appreciate it :)

Sorry to bother you again, but I've been looking through the threads and some MacBook Air users say that they are experiencing WiFi issues. Just wondering whether this is a massive problem that it frequently occurring for users? And are there any personal downfalls to the 2012 MacBook Air model? Thanks again!

Just wanna chip in here. I'm in the same boat. I was originally gonna wait until the new models come out but my macbook died on Xmas day. So I'm just getting the 2012 model. Doesn't really bother me. The 2013 model will (according to rumours on this forum) include the haswell architecture. Basically a performance improvement of ~10-15% on the CPU side and <50% improvement for the gpu. That's between the intel hd4000 (in 2012 models) and the GT3 (2013 models. GT3 is the best out of 3 -GT1/GT2/GT3). Naturally, this also means there will be a boost in battery life of (rumours here) about ~30-60 minutes. To put that into perspective, you can get anywhere between 6.5/9 hrs on the 2012 model depending on usage/settings. So that bit of extra life is great but not essential.

I don't think anyone will notice the CPU improvement unless they are doing intensive processes all the time. In that case I'd suggest a pro model. Now the GPU, that only matters if you want to better performance when playing games or 3D work or something. Personally I don't need that extra power. If I did I'd get a pro computer. I only want an Air to browse the web, watch YouTube (2012 model with IvyBridge has support for 4K playback!), listen to music, watch movies, word processing and light gaming such as minecraft/chess/football manager.

The 2012 air is an amazing machine and I'd definitely recommend it. You can always try it out and if you don't like it return it within 14 days. I wouldn't worry about the 2013 launch. I don't see the need to worry until they put out a retina air with equal or better battery life. My guess for that would be early/mid 2014 since we're probably still ~5 months away from the 2013 model!

-------------

Now for the wifi question. Won't be a huge answer lol. I've never had an issue with wifi on the 2 Airs I used. I'm on my 4th which is being delivered. Only used 2 and the wifi never bothered me. The air is really an amazing little computer. The first one I had ended up with a broken key with just a weeks usage. Don't know how it happened. Genius Bar refused to even acknowledge it was broken so I phoned apple up and got a replacement which arrived with a chipped/scratched casing. The 3rd air arrived with a very loose key which was quite loud when pressed. That's the only problem I've had with them. Hopefully my 4th has nothing wrong with it.

Gee whiz! That was one comprehensive reply. Thank you for spending the time to do so! I have been thinking about the rumored upgrades for the 2013 model and I too think that the changes might not effect me too much. The more I research into the MacBook Air, the more I long to purchase it :p I hope that your 4th Air is all clear of physical issues as well ^^.

I've been researching more about the product and Air users have been talking about their screens, specifically the fact that they prefer the Samsung screen to the LG screen. Seeing as I'll be purchasing my Air through eBay: http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Apple-Ma...s=63&clkid=5006285020450820226#ht_2635wt_1176 OR http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/18101527...X:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1438.l2649#ht_4008wt_1176.

Edit: Drats. Just realised that the OS featured in the eBay item (above) will contain OS X Lion and not OS X Mountain Lion :/ Anyone know how much it costs to upgrade and how big the file size would be???

Edit: Can someone also outline the major differences between OS X Lion and OS X Mountain Lion, if possible, please?

Haha I know! Sorry. I was (and am still) typing on my iPhone! Anyway, yeah, I was the same. The more I researched it the more I wanted it. I've been planning on getting an air since July and like I said I was originally holding out for the 2013 models but luckily I had already decided to buy the 2012 air if my macbook didn't last until the new ones come out. The 2012 air is a nice computer. Apart from those keyboard/case issues it was a perfect computer. Probably was just a bad batch. These machines cost a lot of money so I'm not gonna settle for poor quality.

As far as I'm aware the issues are with the screen and SSD make. LG screen and toshiba SSD are the ones you don't want apparently. You want a Samsung screen and SSD. On both airs I used I ended up with a LG screen and toshiba SSD. At first it took a few days to get used to the screen. Keep in mind I had just been using the same macbook for 4 years so my eyes were so used to that. But after a couple days the screen looked amazing. Really nice colours and contrast. Some people report that the lg screens look washed out and have slow response times. It's just a matter of calibrating the screen if it really bothers you. Give it a few days to get used to it first. I never had a problem with the LG screen at all.

As for the SSD. The toshiba is still really fast but it was noticeably slower than the crucial m4 256gb SSD I had in my old macbook. Reports are that it uses a poor sandy force controller or something (not too knowledgable about this) and that read and/or write speeds are slower than the Samsung SSD. Didn't really bother me too much but know that the SSD is upgradeable. I don't think there are many 3rd party SSD's available for the air though. Hopefully that changes.

Now the OS. Mountain lion costs £13.99 here in the uk. Not sure what that would be in your currency. Mountain lion is a really nice update. Check out the features here: http://www.apple.com/osx/

To me it feels much more faster and stable. It put new life into my 4 year old macbook. Faster and more battery life. I really enjoy the deeper iCloud integration such as messages, power nap (updates everything while the computer sleeps). Also the social network integration with Facebook and twitter. The privacy settings are great so You can restrict Facebook accessing contacts/calendars easily if you don't want them to have it. That's a big problem people have when you mention Facebook integration lol.

I'd say go for it an give it a shot. If your buying it through eBay and want to know its condition or what display/ssd it has then ask the seller. It's easy for them to check. If you buy from apple then you won't have any issues getting a replacement/refund within 14 days if you're not happy with it. Go for it! It's a great computer :)

Gah. I really feel as though the more that I research, the more I find out that issues or desirable improvements intervene with my original state of mind. I'm surprised that Apple doesn't focus on one particular screen brand. Instead, it utilizes both LG and Samsung, leaving customers "flipping" the coin as to which configuration they receive. Regardless, I'm sure that the Air is a wonderful device but I think I have an issue with wanting to be up-to-date with the latest OS and features. My current dilemma still consists of purchasing the Air with OS X Mountain Lion already installed (via. Apple.com.au) or wait out 5 months for the 2013 with the rumored OS X Lynx system. I guess this is an issue that I just have to deal with. Feel free to comment :p

It's obviously up to you to decide but I'd take the current air if you can't wait. I wish they stuck with one make as well but I suppose just one company won't have enough capacity for the amount that apple needs.

I know the air originally came with lion but its still got a long life ahead of it if its anything like my old macbook. It came with 10.5 leopard and was compatible with 10.8 mountain lion. Not sure if it would have run 10.9. I think these airs will last up to 10.10 or 10.11 (if that's what it's called). Anyway, it's possible that the 2013 airs will come with mountain lion on launch. Probably wont see 10.9 till July/August. I wouldn't worry about that. You will be up to date for a long while with these airs. At least that's just my thoughts :)

Is there a massive difference between OS X Lion and Mountain Lion? And I think I might buy a refurbished MacBook Air from the Apple store. Are there any downfalls with purchasing refurbished Airs?

Not a huge update. They could have easily put most of the stuff from it into Lion. Some say Lion was just a beta test for ML. If I were you I'd update to ML instead of Lion. It's more stable, smoother, faster and has more features.

From what I've heard there is nothing wrong with refurbished products. It's just computers that people have return but with new battery/case/ keys and possibly screen. They won't give you any faulty second hand parts. Everything inside is second hand but tested by apple. So essentially you're getting a computer that has been tested by apple twice for performance and quality.

Do you think the new OS will be released with the new Airs in mid 2013? And will the 2013 models be more expensive or cheaper than $1272.70 (the price that I will have to pay for the current 2012 model with a discount). I honestly don't know whether to get it now or wait but I can't wait. Arghhh!

I think it'll just be like it has in the past. New computers released just before a new OS. the current airs came with lion in June then mountain lion came out in July. I can't recall apple releasing both at the same time. Could be wrong though.

If the new airs just have a spec bump then I think it's more likely to see a price reduction than if it were getting a retina display which is gonna put the price up a good couple hundred. Another reason we won't see a retina display for a while. But yeah, probably will have a lower price.

Oookay! Thank you so so much! I know that I've asked way too many questions and bothered you a lot, but I really appreciate the time you took to thoroughly analyse and discuss each of my questions! Good luck for the future and I'll definitely keep you all updated as to whether I bought the 2012 or 2013 model :p

Not a problem! Glad to help out :) if you have any other questions feel free to post them! I'll be checking into this topic anyway to keep up to date with everything air related. thank you and hope you enjoy your 2012 or 2013 Air!

Edit* well it's Wednesday and my air is due for delivery today! Feel nervous. I'm gonna be so upset/annoyed if there is anything wrong with it! I've gone 2 weeks without a computer. Been relying on my iPhone and public computers to get stuff done. If apple offer me a replacement ill have to refuse because the delivery times have been terrible. I placed this order on the 15th. Always had products delivered next day from apple.

Fingers crossed!!

edit 2* got the air delivered and im happy with it! woohoo!!

Random question: What 2012 MacBook Air rumors eventually came true for the 2012 model? Just so I get a rough idea of how likely these 2013 rumors will be. Thank you!

i wasn't keeping up to date with rumours for air back then so I'm afraid i can't answer that for you.

what one you leaning towards? 2012 or 2013?

Hah, I'll keep my fingers crossed for you too! :p

Ahh, no problem! ^^

I think I'm definitely leaning towards the 2012 model. I simply cannot wait 5+ months anymore! Even though I probably should because it'll definitely be better than the 2012, right? :p

Another question, is OpenOffice or NeoOffice reliable products or should I just go with Apple Pages or Microsoft Word?

I don't think we'll get a redesign until at least 2014 so 2012 vs 2013 will probably look the exact same. You'll get 10-15% boost in CPU which will hardly be noticeable unless your doing heavy stuff like video processing/rendering/converting. Again, if you do that then go for a pro. The big boost is in gpu with up to 50% better performance for gaming/rendering. I wouldn't recommend heavy gaming on an air. The current air has loads of gpu power for light gaming. Battery life will be about an extra hour. 8gb and possibly 256gb will be standard for same price as now and if not then we'll prob get a price drop.

I'd say go for the 2012 if you can't wait. It's an amazing machine. It looks beautiful, the screen is really nice, the battery life of 7-8 hours is outstanding, performance is great as it never slows down and you can watch 4k videos/play games without even hearing the fan kicking it. I haven't managed to push it yet but so far it's doing everything I need it to. Ram never goes over 4gb and the CPU usage is always low so it can go really far.

As for the software. I use OpenOffice and it suits me fine. Just try them out and see what suits you. I don't know if neo office is free or not but open office is.

Just got my 2012 MBA tonight! Have a friend that works at an Apple store, so got the F&F discount. Basically worked out the same as the BestBuy deal last weekend, but it's nice having all my receipts and such there, and it's only 10 minutes away. Was all worried about having keyboard issues, etc, but it seems really great so far. I had a 2011 Macbook Pro that went to a good home, and I think this will serve my needs really well. Happy to be a part of the club :)

I guess it's because you can wait and wait and never know when something will be out, or what will be better about it. I figure, this is a very powerful machine, and if they don't update before Haswell, then it'll be quite a wait, and I need to be able to Xcode between now and then. :)

Ahh, that's true. I'm hoping that they update in June as I've decided to postpone my MBA purchase until the new model. Fingers crossed! :p By the way, does your MBA have 4GB or 8GB of RAM? And would 4GB be enough for word processing, surfing the web, watching movies, listening to music, applications and some light/medium gaming? (not all performed at once of course).

This one has 4. I am going to keep a close eye on it until my return period is up, but so far so good. My old MBP had 8 and I was worried, but this processor is pretty wicked and seems to be running great so far.

This one has 4. I am going to keep a close eye on it until my return period is up, but so far so good. My old MBP had 8 and I was worried, but this processor is pretty wicked and seems to be running great so far.

Okies! Thank you :)

Just picked my new 11" MBA 4GB Ram 128 SSD from Best Buy for 949.49 (including tax) hell of a deal for a brand new unit.

I'm jealous of everyone who has a MacBook Air that they are happy with.

I'm on my 4th one since Xmas. I phoned Apple up yesterday to get a refund processed. More keyboard issues. Really loose/noisy keys and some aren't being held in properly. It's as though they aren't being held onto the scissor mechanism tight enough. Took it to the Genius Bar and my only options were to wait a few days while they took the machine apart and put in a new keyboard or I wait another week for a replacement to be sent out. Just had enough with this carry on. Knowing my luck it'd turn up damaged and/or with poor build quality (again).

Also, I'm getting a lot of creaking. It seems to be normal but it wasn't as bad on the other ones I used. Every time I move, type or click the damn thing creaks. Just not happy with it at all.

Once the courier picks it up next week I'll be heading to the Apple store to buy an iMac. Really disappointed. The Air is an amazing little machine but the build quality has been poor for such a premium product.

Aww, man, that's unfortunate news to hear. Perhaps the creaking is because of the bottom lid not being screwed on properly. I read on a few sites where people claim to have a creaking noise as well and some say that the solution is simply unscrewing the bottom, placing the lid in a better position and re-screwing it back on. However, I'm not 100% sure whether this is the case for you. Good luck with your iMac and I hope that you don't have anymore issues. Perhaps this is a sign that you should wait for the 2013 MBA ;)

Yeah, I read up on it and it seems to be normal. I can understand why, it's just pieces of aluminium and it will flex. The creaking was coming from the top case around the track pad so if I rested my palm while typing it would creak, if I was clicking the trackpad it'd creak. Oh well, it's going back anyway. I'm gonna lose my head if anything is wrong with the iMac. I was originally planning to get an iMac as well but ended up going for the Air. Should've just bought the iMac on Xmas instead of the Air!
