Has anyone bought a MBA M1 or MBP M1 from Costco?

I was going to, but then everyone was starting to say buy the 16 GB of ram computer, and Costco didn't have that. Then I started to see the various sales all over the place for the pro and realized the reason why.

I did buy the Air yesterday and it should be here at the beginning of April, according to the Apple website. I'm switching from Windows to Mac (Still keeping the windows computer) and I can't wait to see what it's about. It was the 16 GB of Ram, 512 GB SSD. I think I need to get some accessories for it, but I guess I can do it later.

Does anyone have any advice on some accessories that won't cost me an arm and a leg. I've heard people talk about the keyboard on the Mac and the Touchpad and I'm wondering if I should buy a mouse and keyboard, especially with the 10 key function. I know I need to get a hub for USB A and HDMI so I can attach the monitor. Really hate that there was no USB A or HDMI Port on the new Macs. That seemed like it should have been a given.

Keyboard on the new Airs is great. No complaints at all. From 2015-19 the Mac laptops had a terrible keyboard but it's not a problem any more.

Anyone criticising the Mac trackpad isn't worth listening to. It's the best in the business by an absolute mile. Hate when I have to use any other trackpad these days.

For adding HDMI and USB ports I've got one of these: https://www.anker.com/uk/products/variant/powerexpand-direct-7in2-usbc-pd-media-hub/A83710A1

Suspect others would prefer something that only occupies one of the USB-C ports on the MacBook but I like the small profile and portability of this one. I really only use it at my desk but I like that I have the option of taking it around with me without adding too much bulk.

I was looking at the US version of that site and almost everything they sell is out of stock. That's a bummer. I wonder if there is a site I can go to that is not Amazon.

I ordered something directly from Anker and it came from Amazon anyway. I think that’s the only way to get Anker stuff unfortunately.

So after days of hesitating on hitting the BUY button. I finally settled on this configuration.

13” Macbook air, space gray, 512GB, 8 core cpu/ 8 core gpu, with 8GB ram.

I got it for $1,149.99 with student discount.

I couldn’t get a 16GB ram model for a couple weeks, and I needed one now. plus that would’ve been another $180 bucks.

Anyways, what are you guys thoughts?

This is my first macbook, or mac PC ever!!

You've been on MR for years but it's your first Mac? How often does that happen...

I purchased that exact configuration a few days after they were announced. So far I love this MacBook, it's been super fast and reliable. You will love it!

IMO, the current MBA is a great choice for someone who needs a computer now. The M1 really increases the power, reduces the heat, and increases the battery life. I have a 13" Intel based MBP. It works well but I don't think it has anything on the new MBA. Congrats. Enjoy!

My thoughts are „Congratulations!“ I got my first Mac six years ago (I already had an iPhone for three years then), and I liked it from the beginning. With hindsight, I should have studied the possibilities of macOS earlier and more systematically - it took a while until I discovered Spaces, AppleScript, and other stuff.

For example, this is a good point to start:

there
have fun!
I still use my MacBook air form 2010 and the only advice is to run time machine back ups frequently.
they are easy to install and can be used to retrieve an old file you need in the future.
i still have the original ssd drive running Mountain Lion and the MacBook Air works great!

I have owned Ipads, and I have a iphone 11 pro max 256GB since launch day lol. I have always loved iphones and ipads. But I need more power and freedom
for school work. I am sold on the reliability of owning apple products and their software. So this is my first mac ever!

Macbook air is great so far!

I had a Ipad pro 2018 11” with the 6GB of ram. And I really liked it, but it felt like I couldn’t use it as a real computer. I felt like the IOS limited it’s abilities.

With the mac air, it’s legit full on computer.

You got the same model as me. Its my first mac too. Look up Magnet or BetterSnapTool on the app store. It gives you window snapping similar to that of windows. I own both but I prefer bettersnaptool. Its not perfectly identical to windows but it does a great job

Well after going on adventure through 2 other 2020 MacBooks last year, I just ordered a M1 Air. I'm trading in the 4port MacBook Pro base model (16GB, 512GB) for the M1 MacBook Air with 16GB ram and 1TB. I'll use it primarily for Logic Pro but also as my main computer. I'll using it for a really long time I think 5+ years I think. Future chips will be better, but this'll be at least x3 what I'm used to. Outside of it being smaller/lighter and more ports, there's nothing else I'd want in a laptop.

Since 2016 I used an 11" MacBook Air, but I started to push up to it's limits with Logic and of course wanted a better screen. I bought and returned a 2020 i5 intel Air, I thought the quad core was going to be amazing. But it wasn't. It was faster than the 11" but only marginally so. And the thermals really bugged me, it's top speed was faster but to even get any speed out of it the fan had to ramp up. I know people don't expect a speed monster from a MacBook Air, but this was huge letdown relative to the 11" Air.... adequate at best compared to amazingly capable.

I returned the Air for the 13" MacBook Pro, which did have all the speed I was looking for. I was going to wait for an Air redesign for jumping in... it just seems kind of wasteful to trade in the 13" Pro.

But on the other hand: the M1 Air is really the computer I was looking for from the beginning, new Airs are probably a long way out, Apple might just up the price on the redesign, there's no guarantee they are going back to the small size of the 11" Air or the 12", and I'll never get as good a trade in price for the 13" Pro as I will today. So with those reasons I was able to talk myself into buying a M1 Air... 🙃

All told the Air is costing me $600... mostly because of the upgrades. It was always a gamble buying an Intel Mac with the ARM chips coming out soon... I never expected the M1 to be so good even under emulation though. It's one of those rare times when a low end Mac has amazing performance for money... kinda like the old Airs...

In that case welcome to the party! I think you’ll be happy with the M1. I’m quite happy with my MBP and the kids love their Mini’s.

I just picked up a MBA M1 16gb 1tb. Got $1080 for my 2018 MBP 15'. Battery life, performance, and portability is what sold me. I was going to wait for next gen, but didn't want my trade in value on the MBP to depreciate much more.
