The proud papa of a new 15" i7 MBP! A true PC crossover!

My old Dell D830 bit it yesterday, and I made the move to a new MBP. I purchased Parallels 5 along with it also.

I have to say, this thing is FAST! I installed Parallels, Win 7 Ultimate (to be able to use my old PC apps), no hitches at all.

It does run a bit warm, other than that I cant think of anything else I need, other than maybe a move from 4gb mem to 8gb....

More to come, for sure!

i had a dell before too! this is my 1st mbp too! congrats! welcome to the force of the elite ;) :apple:

Nice! Ill be ordering mine soon. Cant wait!!!

Got a question tho. I just looked up this Parallels thing, I am very interested in getting it.

My question is, to install windows 7 on it, do I need to buy Windows 7?

What did you do, buy or torrent?

Yes you need to buy it in order for it to be legal.

Congrats! You bought the same MBP I did and installed a VM the same way I did :) Just an early warning...keep that VM shut down unless you're using it...it kills battery life.

Definately buy a legal copy of Windows......I am a technet subscriber, so I have no shortage of keys.

Im really liking this MBP, it hasnt coughed yet!

Was that a serious question? Do you even have to ask?

I'm currently abroad in South Korea, so i ordered the 17' antiglare, which arrived yesterday. I am coming from a 2006 1.83 macbook pro, and all i can say is that, wow, the macbook pro has come a long way since then, haha.

First of all, in regards to the anti-glare, i spent about 2 months debating on which display to get. The apple stores here in korea do not carry any anti-glares, so i had to base it off of the in-store glossys and my old model matte. The biggest difference, besides the hi-def display, is the brightness; my goodness this thing is BRIGHT. I have to bring it down 3 notches and it is still brighter than my old macbook pro at its highest setting. Also, the anti-glare screen is absolutely beautiful. These new anti-glare displays are very different from my old one. Everything is crisp and colors pop. I am a photojournalist so photo editing is something i do almost everyday. I don't know about the 15" hi-res antiglare, but this 17" doesn't disappoint.

Battery life is very surprising as well. After calibration, i had the screen set at 3 notches down and am getting 6+ hours doing web browsing and photoshop. Its obviously not the 8-9 hours that is advertised, but it is much better than i had anticipated.

This computer is also SILENT and does not get hot at all. It has been on my lap for about 2 hours now and i will occasionally touch the bottom in disbelief that it hasn't heated up. On my previous macbook pro, i wasn't able to keep it on my lap for more than 5 minutes without having to take a break due to the heat.

One more thing that i am happy with is the weight of the 17". I wasn't sure whether it would be too heavy to carry around, but i took a gamble and am very happy with it. It feels as light, if not lighter, than my old 15".

All in all, i am very pleased with these new models. I hope that new owners will have the same experience.

Cheers.

I received my custom 17" i7 MBP with a rockin 512 GB SSD and 8 GB about two weeks ago and right now have it pretty well fitted out with Windows 7 on Bootcamp (with Office, Photoshop CS5, Sony Vegas, etc.) and Mac Office on the OSX side. While we have an iMac for the family, I have never had a Mac for personal use before.

I have to say, I never go to the Windows partition unless I really have to. I am loving OS X so much compared with Windows 7 that I just stay there and get all my work done.

The funny thing right now is that I am sitting in my office nursing my home-built Windows 7 tower back to life - and have been doing so for three weeks - while I turn to one side and get all my work done with the Mac. My tower has a broken RAID array and a messed up Windows installation on it - but I am not 100% backed up and I am trying to rescue my data before I wipe and re-do the RAID array. How I am doing this? With a second Windows OS on a temporary drive on the parallel bus of the computer (old RAID is SATA), using the DOS command prompt from Windows repair to transfer everything file by file from the fractured Win OS to the good one. Then I offload it to my NAS. I feel like I am carrying my data from a burning building in a tin pail.... This sucks so much...

Once I have my data back, I am thinking of just de-commissioning this PC dinosaur and doing everything with this magnificent machine...

Please let us know how satisfied you are with 4Gb of RAM to run Parallels and Windows. I have been using Windows apps in a VMware Fusion virtual machine for several years on my MBP. When I had only 2Gb of RAM, everything on the Windows side ran slowly and unreliably. I then upgraded my MBP to 6GB of RAM. Since then, I have been running a number of Windows and OS X apps on the OS X desktop simultaneously, thanks to Fusion's Unity mode. Everything has been fast and stable. I don't know, though, whether 4Gb would have worked about as well, so would like to have the benefit of your impressions.

Well, on May 14th, I threw my hat into the ring again and got the top end 15" 2.66ghz i7 MacBook Pro with the high res glossy screen. The last time that I bought a computer direct from apple was on August 24th, 2002 and that was my fabled Powerbook Titanium 800 that still works okay to this day, with some issues. Recently I was using a Dell Inspiron E1505 that I bought on here through the marketplace, but that was stolen from me a few weeks ago, along with books and notes, and my 4th generation iPod as well. I really miss that computer, it made an awesome hackintosh and I had just gotten Snow Leopard working well on it right before it was stolen. Oh well, this new one is about 2.3x as fast so I'm not complaining and I'll just move on. :D Unfortunately, it's still en route and won't get here until the 25th. Admittedly, I am annoyed with this, but it's coming direct from China so I guess it might have just rolled off the assembly line not too long ago.

I was jumping back and forth between glossy and antiglare but the color on the antiglare was too washed out for me compared with the glossy, even after calibration. Plus, I couldn't stand the silver bezel as it just lacked that extra polish. :D I know that this is an unreasonable comparison but I looked at it as Plasma vs. LCD. Yes the glossy would have some reflection, but it also looked better. So I went Glossy High Res as I have also been silently waiting for a mac with 1680x1050 resolution. My E1505 had this resolution and while it might be hard to look at for some, I loved the extra screen real estate and just the way everything looks on it. I CAN'T STAND these 15.6" 1366x768 resolution screens that exist in the PC world! I need VERTICAL RESOLUTION! I also ordered it with the 7200rpm hard drive, Applecare and only 4gb of ram, because I can always upgrade it later. I'll admit I am worried about the freezing issue and hope that it gets resolved soon and/or mine doesn't have the issue. I'll update when this beauty gets here.

I'm back. :D

Edit: Oh heck, what is it doing in Anchorage, Alaska?!

just purchased 2 macbook pros, a 13 and the 15 to communicate with my family from Afghanistan.

the 15 has the 2.66 i7, 500gb sata, 4gb memory, glossy screen

the 13 has the 2.4 Core2 Duo, 250gb sata, 4gb memory, glossy screen

longtime pc user, these are my 1st macs, some teething pains but overall a good experience so far.

I like the glossy screen so far but may need to get an antiglare protective film for the desert before I leave.

looking at protective skins also, the Zaggskins look nice and will need to protect the keyboard when I get out in the elements too.

this looks like the place to get all the info I need to make the transition to mac.:D

Currently in the mail is an i5 2.4Ghz MBP w/ HR-Glossy screen that Apple is providing to replace my recently ever failing Late 2008 Unibody 2.4Ghz, 9600M GT 256MB + 9400M model.

After replacing the battery twice, and then the logic board and 2 other trips to the store prior where they said either nothing was wrong or just reset PRAM/SMC to diagnose a battery issue where it would not hold a charge 4-5 hours during sleep so when I got to class it would be dead..

Then receiving the machine back with what I suspect was a refurbished logic board, which exhibited the 'will not hold a pair of headphones in the jack to save my life' issue, as displayed here:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RTK83kkvdC4&feature=player_embedded#at=65

They then replaced the logic board again after I called in with this issue and they said to go the store to get it diagnosed and maybe get it 'adjusted' the guy at the store said 'no way' then called back up, they set up a repair to have the logic board done again, so it came back 3 days later with the same issue...

Called up immediately after unpacking the machine at observing the same behavior, this woman was apologetic and sorry for what she saw on my history as a huge runaround and unwillingness on Apple's part to correctly diagnose two issues. During all of this I have been patient and calm knowing they'll take care of me even if it's a bit inconvenient, they have in the past.

She offered me a new machine as stated above and the option to do a paid upgrade. I opted for the HR-Glossy display for an extra 100+tax.

I exchanged emails with a replacement-rep and mailed off my MBP, the order for the new one was placed on Monday the 17th, when the rep could see on FedEx end that the new machine was accepted, I had a tracking # on the 19th, it started moving around on FedEx in Shanghai, CN on the 20th, and now it's been sitting in the destination sorting depot/warehouse over the weekend supposedly arriving by 10:30 on Tuesday, hoping since it's already in town it'll come Monday (Today),

I was incredibly surprised to see that Apple used the slowest shipping option they offer to mail off this replacement machine after I've been without and repairing mine for the better part of a month and a half with them.. Oh well, excited for a fresh start, got my 640GB WD Blue ready to be installed and all my installers and updaters and serials and CD's ready to go when it gets here... again, hopefully tomorrow.

I'll say that this is the 3rd machine Apple has 'gifted' me due to warranty repair issues I've experienced in the past, went from Core Duo BlackBook to Penryn C2D BlackBook, to a Late 2008 Unibody MacBook, traded that machine and cash for the Late 2008 Unibody MacBook Pro and this machine is getting replaced with the i5 2.4Ghz machine.

It's been quite a journey all these years, not feeling as if the QA/QC is totally there, especially having replaced my iPhones, all 3 models a number of times also, twice on the 2G, 9 times on the 3G, and twice now on the 3GS.

I'm incredibly happy with the phone support, less happy with the Genius Bar as of late, and incredibly unhappy with the local store especially, they dropped my girlfriends White MacBook and had the balls to return it to us after the repair in that condition, after raising a stink with sjobs email and the retail stores email and my blog, they replaced my GF's and my MacBook with the 2008 Unibody MacBook's as stated above also, they didn't have to replace mine, but since I was the one driving back and forth for the repairs and doing all the phone calls and emails and tracking it, they wanted me on good terms too I guess.

The guys at the store know me by name now, one manager is afraid of me because she was the one who handed me the White MacBook after it had been dropped, I was FUMING with anger at that time, luckily my girlfriend was there that time and told me to calm down and gather my thoughts/options and we ended up with the above resolution with our replacements.

But umm... this thread isn't really about that is it.. kinda just kept typing.. Yay new MBP hopefully today, probably tomorrow! Wish they'd have shipped it faster!

I also ordered a MBP on the 17th. It's due date is the 27th but I will receive it today, as it's in Oakland already. You should also get yours today. There is only one "speed" of shipment for MBP's out of China. So it doesn't matter if one chooses the optional "faster two day" $18 choice when ordering. I've used both "reg free shipping " as well as the upgraded faster choice, on the four different MBP'S I've ordered recently & they all have traveled through the system & arrived in the same amount of time.

Interesting, well it's arrived this morning, unpacked it taking lots of pictures w/ my D90 along the way, about to turn it on but having a bit of breakfast first.

I'm sure they've been mentioned in fact, I know some have, but the power adapter is metallic now on the mag-safe end, of course, but also the 3-prong-US plug is redesigned as well, it's much more curved, has a ridge to the end of it, not like the previous one, I'll take a comparison picture, I suspect it's to combat fraying. The material of the cabling feels much more grippy too, totally different from my Late 2008 models and the BlackBooks before those.

My new 15" MacBook pro just made it to Anchorage. Do the power adapters support the same style plugs as the previous one? I have a set of international adapters I use with my 2006 MBP (they replace the plug directly on the brick).

be happy with your 5 hours at 50% brightness. The advertised 8-9 hours is only accurate if the screen brightness is turned to "off" and absolutly no programs are running.

Every place with the 8-9 hour battery line on the Apple site has this footnote:

13-inch MacBook Pro testing conducted by Apple in March 2010 using preproduction 2.66GHz Intel Core 2 Duo-based MacBook Pro units. 15-inch MacBook Pro testing conducted by Apple in March 2010 using preproduction 2.66GHz Intel Core i7-based MacBook Pro units. 17-inch MacBook Pro testing conducted by Apple in March 2010 using preproduction 2.53GHz Intel Core i5-based MacBook Pro units. Battery life depends on configuration and use. See www.apple.com/batteries for more information. The wireless productivity test measures battery life by wirelessly browsing various websites and editing text in a word processing document with display brightness set to 50%.

So either they are being criminally deceptive, or they are claiming the 8-9 hour battery life is under the conditions they describe. (Browsing websites, editing a text document at 50% brightness).

My computer just made it to Anchorage and is supposed to be delivered tomorrow. I am not disputing anyones real world testing. Apple seems to be pretty clear that their claim is a 8-9hr battery life under light usage at 50%.

Will pick up my new 13" MBP 2.4Ghz, 4GB, 250HDD when I receive the following items, so it's somewhat secured right out of the box ! I love that.

Just purchased the keyboard cover, wristpad & trackpad film, the screen anti-glare and now trying to find an exterior case that could fit with the updated magsafe ... any help would be greatly appreciated ! :apple:

MacBook Pro Core i7 | 2.66GHz | 8GB | 500@7200rpm | Hi-Res 15.4" Anti-Glare

Ordered May 17
Arrived May 24

This is the third one I've ordered, since I was so happy with the first two I gave them to family members.

MBP three runs fast, quiet and cool, as did the first two. Only getting good and warm (not hot) when pushing it with graphics intense proprietary Aerospace Design 3D software.

Now going on five hours straight this machine is proving to be as good as the others. I could not be happier.

I have been following the forums for quite some time. Finally bit the bullet and ordered an Macbook Pro 15.4 inch Hi-Res Antiglare core i5 processor 2.4GHz with 4GB RAM and 320GB HD.

Biggest ever purchase I have made in my life so far lol. I feel broke now.

Now for the hard part waiting.
