Just got my hands on a brand new 13in rMBP 2.4/8gb/256gb, I couldn't wait until WWDC because I got a good deal. This is my first Mac ever and I can't wait to start learning the Mac OS.

Just bought a brand new 13" rMBP yesterday! :)

2.4/8/256.

I upgraded from a 2011 MacBook Air. Super happy! :D

I am in your same exact shoes going from a 2011 MBA 13" 4GB/i5 and was thinking about going to the 13 Retina Pro with 8GB

How are you liking the machine so far?

Is it speedy enough? Any issue with loud fan, image retention, websites not showing up as retina / blurry?

Do you prefer the MBA over the Pro?

Is the screen really that much better?

Hey guys I just became a Mac convert a little over a week ago. I bought a rMBP with 256gb ssd and 8gb ram with the haswell processor. Anyhow the reason I switched after being a Windows user since the 90's was because of windows 8. I just absolutely can't stand it. So I was able to borrow a mid 2012 MBP with the superdrive and liked it so much I took the leap and couldn't be happier. It is so streamlined inside and out I just love it over a PC. I am a college student and was worried about compatibility until I noticed how many of my instructors are using Mac's themselves. So hi everybody.

Beautiful new 15" rmbp arrived today!!! I am absolutely loving it! It is quite a step-up from my 2010 13" macbook pro.

Also, this week seemed like it took forever!

Woo hoo! Glad to hear it. I bet that 15" screen is the bomb. I had to keep the cost somewhat under control or would have did the 15". Congrats! :)

End it up getting refub 13.3" i5, 4GB, 128 SSD from apple. Saw a deal (brand new sealed) yesterday for it on ebay for 1099..... but i dont know the warranty from ebay. Purchased my dad ipad air from ebay and the warranty was there, but dont know about macbook.

Sounds good. The apple refurb is a great option. Enjoy your new machine! :)

Just ordered an 8/256 13" rMBP from Best Buy. With their Memorial Day Sale and the $150 Educational Discount it was $1274 + tax. It's $5 more than the refurb from Apple which has been gone for more than week now, but it's well within the return window in the event that something comes out of left field for WWDC. I doubt that will happen though.

Looking forward to it, and moving my 13" Late 2011 MBP to the house and trashing our garbage-from-day-1 17" Dell laptop that's been our home computer for a long time now!

Going to pick it up in a few minutes!

Well I didnt go for the RMBP I went for the late 2012 mbp, main reason I went for this is because i can upgrade my ram and hard drive at a later date, an I got a steal on it! only paid £499!! So saved myself a big wedge!

Pick it up friday afternoon :D

I've now used my rMBP for a couple of weeks, and as I still had my MBA around for a while before selling it, I was able to compare the two back to back as well.

Here's the thing: The screen really is THAT MUCH better. Nothing else I've used can compare. Everything is crystal clear, making it a joy to use for reading, writing, watching/editing photos, movies et.c. The MBA feels quite bad in comparison. However, you must know that this comes at a price.

The MBA was smoother for browsing the internet, smoother for scrolling documents, texts, and so on. When you scroll through pages, there is a tiny bit of lag on the rMBP, and this computer has way better specs than my old 2011 MBA. Some internet-pages are worse than others. MacRumors works well, but pages with plenty of flash or ads do lag, and it hurts to say it. There is lag even in the "Best for display"-resolution, but even more so when you use scaled resolutions. Sure, the rMBP will definitely have more power than the MBA, but if you just use it for daily tasks, such as web-browsing, Office, email, music, movies et.c., I think the MBA will feel faster. However, the latest OS X update, 10.9.3 did reduce the lag to an extent, but it's still present. Sure, the rMBP is definitely speedy enough, leaving my 2011 iMac in dust - but the MBA felt a bit snappier in day-to-day use.

To be honest, I was SICK of the MBA-screen. The problem was not only the resolution, it was something else which I can't really put my finger on, but I got really annoyed after reading on it for a while. Heck, even my old 2007 1280*800 MacBook was more comfortable to read on. The rMBP took care of that problem. Moreover, I get even better battery life out of the rMBP than my old MBA. The rMBP is as cool as the MBA, and whereas the fans used to kick in at times with the old MBA - I've never even heard them spin up on this new rMBP - it's dead silent. The rMBP also feels like a much more high-quality device.

Here's the thing. I'm always interested in adapting new tech, and I've been interested in the rMBP since it was released. I do feel like a bit of an early-adopter with this rMBP, as I think the experience is not perfectly mature yet.
For me, it was worth the upgrade as I was out of warranty and got a great price for my old MBA, while also buying this rMBP at 10 % off. I was not going to replace my old MBA with a 2013/2014 MBA as it's more or less the same thing, except for improved battery life, so the rMBP was the logical choice. Last but not least, the rMBP feels a lot more high-quality than the old MBA.

I'm sure most of the lag-issues will be worked out when Apple releases 10.10, or when all web-pages are retina-ready. Other than that I'm perfectly happy with it. No image-retention, no loud fans, et.c.

TL;DR: The question you need to ask yourself is how much you care about that amazing retina screen? The MBA is cheaper, snappier (for now) and has better battery-life. However you should know that the MBA also feels a lot cheaper than the rMBP. You should also know that for more intensive work, the rMBP definitely is a faster computer, which will start to show with time, as more software/webpages are getting optimized for it.

Edit: I'm sure I'm cursing in the church by posting this here of all places, but this is my experience of the transition from the MBA to the rMBP. While it's an amazing computer, it isn't without faults.

Made me smile to see your post goatgotmac, I'm expecting a little bundle of joy early next month too!
A two thousand dollar ++ bundle of joy.
My darling old MacBook is over seven years old and is developing some memory issues but it's been a completely faithful machine.
If you're interested, it's the 13 inch MacBook Pro with retina display..
2.6GHz Dual-core Intel Core i5, Turbo Boost up to 3.1GHz
16GB 1600MHz DDR3L SDRAM
128GB PCIe-based Flash Storage

Just purchased the macbook pro retina 8/256 gig for $1216 out the door from best buy last monday. Did I do well?

Still haven't opened it, I guess depending on what happens this week I'll either return it or keep it.

I was thinking about this when I got my 2013 macbook pro (a week ago). I think its just a cpu bump like the air. Not worth retail price imho vs 2013 (sale from bestbuy)

It was normally discounted for $75, there is a student discount coupon if you have a .edu address for $150 off, and the USPS movers coupon for 10% which can only be applied in stores and not every store will let you stack the coupons.

Thank you I'll look into it. I think bb has a law enforcement discount of 10% so if I can get them to do that that would be great. The .edu is only for college students right?
Im buying the computer for my daughter but she's in middle school.

Yesterday, I ordered a refurbished late 2013 15.4" rmbp, this morning received the box...so fast...let me go home at night and slowly experience the machine.:D:D

Just got a brand new 15" 2.3/16GB/512GB from Best Buy for $2259 out the door, WITH CA sales tax. Currently was on sale for $2469, and then used a $150 Student Discount, and the 10% off movers coupon. I handed them the Student Discount first, and then the 10% movers coupon and it went in without issue, although the sales rep did comment on how good of a deal it was. Was originally just going to do the 2.0/8GB/256GB, but this got the price low enough not to argue. Although you could get that for about $1700 out the door with this deal which is crazy good in itself. I know myself well enough to know if the highest end was within my price range I needed to go for it though :)

I'm coming from the 13" 2.6/8GB/512GB and am a happy camper so far. In-between the additional screen real estate, and better speakers, I find the UI is a bit more snappy, especially in resolutions beyond best for Retina. Having the ability to power along with the 750m if I am plugged into battery power is nice, especially with the ability to then go back to just the Iris Pro if I am on the run. I actually find it a bit more comfortable on my lap on the couch, or laying in bed which was a welcome surprise. It seems to have the weight distributed a bit better than the 13" in that regards. It's WAY more laptop than I could ever actually need, but I am hoping I will at least have some sort of reasonable chance of staying content now, and I am pretty future proofed I would like to think as well. Not sure when I will be acquiring a 4k display, but knowing it's a bit easier to power with the discrete graphics was the last little nudge to make the decision to go with the higher end model.

Thank you for your help. I was gonna buy directly from the apple store but thanks to all the discounts you recommended I ended up paying $975 for the 13" MacBook Pro 4gb/500gb saved me almost $200 if I bought from the apple store.

After a few years away from the mac i decided i needed to cheer myself up and went out to pick up a new mac air, however i was able to get some good discount and ended up purchasing a new rmbp 13 8gb / 128gb from PCworld.

I just love this thing and couldnt believe how slim and light it was when i took it out of the box compared to my old 13 mbp.

I was just sick of windows 8.1 stupidity and was glad to get back into osx, tweaking it to the way i like its gonna be a keeper, well for a year at least:D

Just typing on my new rMBP 13 8GB/512GB. Took the risk to get one under the refurb and the Mac is a Late 2013 model. Not a scratch on it. £250 off and dead happy! I just couldn't be content with a 256GB model. Especially when the upgrade path is not as easy as it once was with normal 2.5" drives.

My 4 year old MBP with a 512GB Samsung 840 Evo SSD will go on eBay eventually to make up some of the money I've spent :D. Only thing I've needed to fix is the SATA cable that went faulty. Glad it wasn't the SSD which I thought it was!

The screen is just amazing on this thing. So glad I didn't go for the MBA.
