After several years, I'm posting to this thread again. Back in July 2012 I waited patiently for my new 15" rMBP. It's still my workhorse for working on the road and at client sites (I'm a consultant). It replaced an old 2008 MBP which was relegated to the kitchen table for checking email, reading the news, and watching an occasional video when eating breakfast. I didn't want to take a chance on spilling coffee on my work computer, and this old MBP still worked OK. Until recently. I'm just tired of waiting for the spinning lollipop to disappear whenever a web page loads up, and it has trouble finding my WiFi router. So, today I pulled the trigger on a late 2011 17" MBP with the 750GB HDD and 8GB RAM. I've always wanted one, and now that they're getting older, prices have dropped considerably. This one, in particular, I was able to get on Ebay for $725 plus shipping. In the fullness of time I'll probably swap out a new battery and install a 1 TB SDD and 16GB RAM, but for now I'm looking forward to reading the news over my cereal on a pretty 17" screen.

I know all about 'radeongate', but if that becomes a problem before next February, when the replacement campaign ends, it'll get a properly soldered GPU. Other than that, I'm ready to tear it apart and swap components as required to keep it running.

Buy a sleeve for when you are storing/moving it
any good one that you suggest?

I had a bad experience with a case chipping my MBP. 50 dollars to do more harm than good was not a good idea.

That's what i see a lot of people are complaining about that.

What you guys think about palmuguard of moshi does that do harm to the retina screen ? any idea about it? Should i use it or not?

Just got the 2015 13 inch 2.9 512gb! It's a keeper!

It arrived this afternoon.Wow - what a beauty. It's in great shape. The date of manufacture is May 2012, just a few months before my 15 first-model rMPB was. The battery is at 90%, which is not bad. The screen is bright, the keys are good, and everything works. In fact, the keys on my rMBP are much more worn out from all the typing I've done in 3 years.

I installed Yosemite, then migrated from my rMBP. How sweet it is.

Of course, I'm spoiled by SSDs, so I'll have to move the 750GB 5400 RPM HDD it came with into the optical bay and get a 500GB SSD. I think I can live with 1.25 TB on the road! Upgrading the RAM to its 16GB capacity will cost about $90, so that's a given. Finally, for under than $15 I can get a Gmyle USB3
express card. I have lots of USB3 flash drives that I need with this machine. I'll probably have to tinker with drivers to get the Gmyle to work under 10.10.4, but it's an interesting challenge worthy of my time. ;-)

Got a 128gb 13" rMBP and want to protect it the best. So I should get a laptop case and keyboard cover? What else should I get? Which case is the best too?

I have the opportunity to purchase an open box retina MacBook Pro 15" for $1695 from a local retailer. It's the lower end 2015 model with force touch track pad and 256GB SSD and 16GB RAM. My current model is the 2012 MBP retina 15 when they first came out, also the lower end model. I love this machine, just getting the itch for a new one. Do you think that's a good price and upgrade? They retail for $1999. I can probably sell my 2012 model for $1000 on Craigslist.

Nope, open box devices tend to be hassles. You have a decent machine. No need to upgrade after 3 years.

Can you wait six months to "scratch" your "itch"? Likely a redesigned 15" rMBP with Skylake processors will be available then.

That's your opinion. Don't be throwing around this nonsense because no one knows what the future holds.

I was not claiming to "know what the future holds", which is why I used the word "likely". Perhaps you should become familiar with its definition.

After the fiasco with the radeongate, I needed a computer fast (still in service). I know I need 15" Macbook Pro, the only option is either Iris Pro 5200 or AMD.
I vowed never want to deal with discrete card again but I just couldn't get myself over buying a 2 year old graphic card technology with todays money. So yeah I bite my tongue
and purchased the Macbook Pro Retina with AMD R9, I'm truly happy with how silent and fast this thing is. And connect it to external display the temperature is very low, so far so good !!

I am pretty nervous. I ordered a base model Macbook Pro last Thursday with education discount. The order status said that it would ship in 2 - 4 business days, and deliver on Aug 11 - Aug 13 by way of next day shipping. Tomorrow is the 13th and the order is still processing! Anybody ever experience this?

It was crunch time for me today - after months of mulling over what to get, I ended up deciding to let my little brother decide for me. I was split between the retina MacBook and the 13" MBP. So today after work I went the department store right next to work and picked up a 13" MBP, 256gb SSD. I'm loving my brother's decision - this thing is, as osnola ibex wrote above, a thing of beauty.

Thanks, b!

I struggled for almost a half year with getting a new rMBP.
Yesterday came that day. I've walked into the Premium Reseller 20 minutes before closing. After 25 minutes I've walked out with brand new (not RFB) mid'14 rMBP 15". Switching from mid'09 White MB it's like… I don't know… Switching from Toyota Yaris '09 to last years BMW M5.

Best decision ever.

hi everyone,
just ordered a macbook pro 128GB with ram upgrade to 16GB
can wait for it to arrive.....

Hi all,

I purchased a mid-15' rMBP w/AMD R9 m370x a few months back and have been loving it. Coming back over after years of dealing with laptops running Microcrap OS's, I immediately fell in love with the OS X. Currently running El Capitan PB 4, and just updated to Bootcamp 6 last night. My main complaint with the laptop was the heavy throttling during games such as GTA V, but El Capitan fixed that issue and I was able to play for hours without it throttling, well, let me rephrase that, in PB 1, will stay at 800mhz in GTA V no matter what. Since then, Apple has been playing around with the mhz, so it'll throttle down a little once in a while but never all the way down to 400mhz which caused stuttering in games. Anyway, I could have gotten a rMBP w/750m much cheaper but I have a Lenovo Y500 w/ GT650m SLI so I wanted to check out AMD again. Opened up the laptop and replaced the thermal paste because I have to open everything I own to see how it ticks for myself. But I recommend just leaving it alone, Apple did a pretty good job with the thermal paste, at least with my machine.

-Cheers
