Hi!
After lurking for well over a year, I've finally signed up, and now I can contribute to this very interesting thread.
I've been longing to replace my Sony Vaio Windows 10 laptop for quite some time now. It runs Windows 10, but I never liked the screen, the hardware and also the software. I had so many issues with Windows 8 that Windows 10 partially resolved. It wasn't particularly smooth either! To be fair, my love-hate relationship with Windows has mostly leant towards hate.
Anyway, I couldn't justify buying a a brand new Apple Macbook Pro, especially at the new prices, so I decided to scour eBay for many months looking for a good deal.
I came across an Apple refurb Mid 2014 Macbook Pro 15 Retina, i7 2.5 GHz, 16Gb RAM, 512Gb SSD with Nvidia GT750 GPU. It cost me £1399 in November 2016.
The US keyboard wasn't an issue for me. The battery cycle count was 3, and the battery was manufactured in February 2015, just a month before the Macbook Pro itself was manufactured. The batteries apparently have a lifespan of around 3 years, so I'll have to keep an eye on it from 2018, just in case things deteriorate, but I've budgeted to replace it just in case.
Everything seems to be working fine and I'm very happy with it! I am mainly learning XCode/Swift on it, using Firefox, and various other things, and it hasn't missed a beat.
Being rather OCD, I've added a various protectors and covers to it, just to keep it safe and free from damage. I'd like to keep this for at least 4-5 years before upgrading again.
I would highly recommend an Apple refurb for those on a tight budget, don't be afraid of going for an older model like I did, it still does most tasks perfectly fine, but of course YMMV.
I have up to a year to take up Apple Care, which I'm likely to do as many seem to recommend it here.
Great to join the forum, and I look forward to joining in more discussions!
