I've managed to get top spec'd models at Apple Stores in Australia too. I think they carry limited quantities of higher configurations for each model. They're aware some people need more storage.

It makes sense for them if someone walks in wanting a particular configuration that they can offer them something very close and send them away with a sale, rather than telling them they have to order online and wait a week.

Ok thank you, I've seen that they are also available for order online and pick up in store, my only issue with that is being able to order one and then pick up on a specific date, because the nearest Apple Store is Birmingham for me, it's a few miles away from where I live, and I go Birmingham shopping a few times a year.

It would be great to just be able to walk in the store and buy one there and then, I think I'm going to wait until later this year anyway, mainly due to spec updates like Kaby Lake and there have been rumour of price drops also. Plus I'm still deciding between the 13" and the 15"

A few miles? Hehe. UK isn't that big anyway! :p

But if you don't drive I guess it can be a hassle, like all the Apple shops in Melbourne are in the outer suburbs and aren't immediately next to public transport, unlike the Sydney ones.

I picked up a late 2016 MacBook Pro (i7 2.9Ghz Radeon Pro 460 1TB). I wanted to test drive how I felt about the keyboard and dongle situation and I wasn't too disappointed. I don't really like the keyboard but the weight saved its nice.

So far so good. Time to put my old 2015 15" rMBP 1TB m390x on Craigslist...

I got a very good price for mine. Especially if you have AppleCare, a lot of people still want that older model and Apple themselves still charges a pretty penny for it. Technically they're selling a lesser version than what you have too.

How are you finding the steroidal trackpad? Any issues with clicking and palm rejection?

Hehe yea a few miles away and I don't drive so it's a matter of using the train. That's why I want to guarantee they will have the configuration I want in stock.

Hey mate,

I am looking at this exact model as well from Australia.

Just wondering the model is holding up? Any comments? Do you love it?

It's a hefty discount from a. Rand new with same specs...would be cool if it was a 512gb!

Thank you for your thoughts and advise!

Well this is my first refurb purchase and I honestly cannot tell the difference between refurbished and brand new. The savings are significant, that's for sure and the laptop itself is a joy to work with.

Here's a little run down of the product itself as well as the refurb experience.

Force Touch Trackpad - not game changing, but turned me from a tapper to a clicker. The fact that I can click anywhere on the trackpad is great and it feels so damn nice.
Retina Display - I was coming from a 2010 15" Macbook Pro, which looked pretty good in isolation. Once I booted up the 2560 x 1600 display on this machine, I felt like I had a new set of eyes. The clarity. The brightness. The colours. Beautiful!
Flash Storage - Read and write speeds are incredibly fast!
Refurbished Product - I've always been the type of person to purchase my technology brand new. I didn't want someone else's grubby hands on it, smashing the Spacebar too hard or mistreating the battery. But with ~$400 saving we get from the refurb store, this was too hard to resist. The condition it came in was brand new. Not a scratch, dent, mark or fingerprint anywhere on the device. The battery had 6 cycles and the screen is pixel perfect.

If you'd like to know anything else, I'd be happy to answer.

Thanks for all the information!

I have tried the 2016 macbook pro for the past 10 days and unfortunately had pretty poor experiences! Which is why I am now considering the 2015 one.

In my experience with the 2016 one, I thought the keyboard was very underwhelming and loud (in uni lectures I feel this could be embarrassing lol), not to mention the abnormal sounds from various keys. I also would prefer a full set of ports.

- In your original post you mention that you deliberated a lot the two models (2015 and 2016), would you be able to clarify why you did in fact choose the 2015 one...which is what I am heavily leaning towards now?
- The refurbished one says it has PCIe flash storage but the brand new one says it has SSD, is the the same?
- What was the manufacturing date of the battery and macbook (coconut battery can show you this I think)?
- Would the older generation 2015 5th gen 2.7GHz processor be any slower the the 2016 6th gen 2.0GHz processor?

The same specced brand new macbook is actually 2319, I the 1779 almost feels ludicrously wrong lol...discount of almost 600 dollars!!!!

Thanks again and congrats on a great purchase by the sounds of things!! :)

- Ports. I know that USB-C is the way of the future, but for right now all I have is devices and cables that are USB-A and I wasn't prepared to spend $2,200AUD on a laptop then hundreds on adaptors and cables.

- I'm pretty sure there is no difference between the two. The read and write speeds on the 2016 SSD are slightly faster though. Something we wouldn't really notice in every day use for the regular person.

- Mine was 29/06/16, so its only 7 months old and had 6 cycles, which is pretty damn good!

- I'm no expert on how much of a difference this can make, but the multi-core Geekbench score for the 2016 model is 7302 to the 2015's 5856 and their single core is almost identical. Again, I don't see it as that much of a difference, especially for the price.

Hope that helps! :)

It really does help! Thanks so much!

Looking forward to getting the great bargain for a great machine :)

Upgrading from a Mid 2009 15" MBP to a 13" 3.3/16gb/256ssd. After a quick trial at a local Apple Store I was convinced but still skeptical about the TB and trackpad. Contemplated this purchase for the last few weeks and I am now playing the waiting game. The old one served me well after upgrading the RAM to 8gb and the HDD to a SSD, it lasted quite awhile. I am hoping this ouch awe will do the same.

After shuffling between the old MBP, a 2013 iMac, wife's MBA, and iPad Air 2, I figured it was time.

My only concern is the TB and how much I'll be able to sell myself that this was worth it.

On a side note, at the Apple Store one of the sales rep was debating with me that Apple will never sell a touchscreen MacBook. I just thought how narrow minded some of them have become and in foresight of their current lineup such as the iPad Pro and iPhones I wouldn't be surprised if this is something Apple will consider sooner than later.

Yep - I put the 13" TB-MBP back in the box, drove down to my local Apple Store and returned it. Purchased a non-tb variant and brought it home. Then I realized I am not the one for early adoption and being a dongle master. Took a deep look at my needs and went online and placed an order for a 2015 15" MBP for $1,399.00; the same price I paid for the non-tb variant of this 13". I am now happy as a clam. Mic Drop.

Once the 2015 comes in, this one is going back to the store. That is if I don't have some epiphany and change my mind again.

After saying I wasn't going to get one of the new MBPros as I have an iMac as my main machine, a surface book for "power on the road", and an rMB as a portable mac, I caved in and bought one! In my defence, my rMB has been passed to my daughter to use at Uni and I'm going to be away a lot this year so needed something more powerful than it anyway.

Added to that the fact my surface book was becoming annoying (it's been a bit of a problem child from the start with blue screens and sleep issues and now has issues with controlling its CPU speed) and I decided a new MacBook Pro was in my future :)

I went for the 13" TB with 1GB SSD, 16GB ram and the middle processor in the end as the 15" is too big for me as a portable machine and it was delivered today.

The first impressions are good - build quality is excellent and it looks really sleek.

I'm still migrating my data at the moment so haven't really had much of a play as yet but it seems pretty fast out of the box

I'm hoping this will provide enough power to replace both my rMB and Surface Book and allow me to reduce my total number of computers

Hehe, welcome to the club. I was adamant I wasn't buying one this year..... Yeah, that went well  can't wait til Friday when it finally arrives. Funny how 10 days feels like months when you're waiting to get your mitts on a new shiny :D

Pulled the trigger tonight on a 13'' MBP w/ Touch Bar, 256GB SSD, 16GB Ram & maxed processor. It took me forever to decide on screen size, but came to the conclusion that for portability, the 15'' would just be overkill for my needs. I'm coming from a mid 2014 base model MacBook Pro which is still in phenomenal condition with a near new battery life. I just couldn't help myself lol! My wife is going to take my 2014 model so it will still serve her well for hopefully years to come. I'm definitely excited as can be for it to arrive on Monday. Picked it up off of B&H electronics and saved almost $400 from not having to pay sales tax. With so many mixed reviews on the 2016 machines, I am excited as hell and nervous at the same time lol. Hoping I made the right decision instead of opting for a 2015 model, which I considered for quite a while. I'll post some thoughts and feedback on it Monday once I get it up & running.

How did you save almost $400?? I've been watching for sales and haven't seen anything over $200 the 13inch with tb.

What the heck is your sales tax? Mine would have been 130 @ 8 percent. Your sales tax is 25 percent? Doesn't make sense :/

Well, my sales tax here in Ohio is 7.25%. On my order completion page it had a little note that I saved $351. My total cost was $2,229. That was for the 13'' max processor, touch bar, 16Gb ram, & 256GB SSD.

Fair enough lol sounds good! I debated for quite some time between the 12'' or a 15'' 2015 model, from all the mixed feedback on the 2016 models.. Here's to hoping I made the right decision lol. Monday can't come soon enough lol

I have no reservations about going with the new model. I'm coming from Windows but I think I'll get a lot of use out of the touchbar, and I like the idea of having the latest tech. I know next year will have Kaby, but I'm okay with the specs on this one.

I'm coming from a mid 2014 base model MacBook Pro. I do agree with you on the touch bar usage. I think I'll find myself getting a good deal of usage out of it. Especially once Microsoft updates their office apps with TB support. I love the idea of being able to customize it to suit your usage. I'm not to concerned about the Kaby Lake upgrade or the potential 32GB ram support either. I have a Windows PC that I built last summer with 32GB Ram, GTX 1070, Z170 Fatal1ty Motherboard and a 4.4GHZ Skylake for all of the heavy lifting and gaming I can throw at it. Oddly enough, I still find myself using my MBP more, on the go and home.

Do you like the 13"? My fear was that it would be too small, but I'll end up getting an external monitor. I really wanted the portability.

Honestly, I love the 13''.. This time around I considered going with the 15'' but in the end I just couldn't break myself away from the awesome portability.. At home, I'll normally AirPlay through my  TV to my big screen if I need the larger viewing area. The 12'' to me did seem to small, and I was worried the 15'' would be to much for me to lug around. In the end the 13'' still seemed like the sweet spot to me

I think I'll be happy with it. I've been using my girlfriends Nobillis and it was actually an impressive machine. I hope the battery life on this thing doesn't disappoint.
