WAiting on New 15" 2.53GHz: Question about Education Discount on AppleCare Protection

Hello all,
Just ordered the 15" thru Edu discount with ipod touch...
I just noticed that the Applie care protection was on discount too, but i did not buy when i ordered.
I know I have a year to buy this plan, however, was this discount only offered if you purchase with the product? I have tried to log in after and when i add apple care it shows it as full price.
My item has not yet shipped, so if need be i can cancel the order and re-add apple care at the discounted price...
Any thoughts?
By the way, I'm from Canada, in case anyone knows if the rules may be different.

Hey guys,

I've ordered a macbook pro 2.8 from the UK refurb store. Got an even bigger disocunt on it thanks to my companies corporate discount! Was delivered on Tuesday and Wednesday but both times I was at work so couldn't sign for it.

Word of warning - In the UK Apple uses UPS. UPS seem to be the only courier who don't have a local depot so it means I have to drive 30 miles to their nearest depot, glad I got that extra discount now!

It'll really annoying that they won't ship to store. I want to order the LED display but the delivery thing is putting me off.

My Macbook pro arrived on Thursday... today its going back! Started making strange noises over the weekend. As its a refurb Apple won't replace it. Only refund. Now I have to order another one and wait.

Hey everyone, I just got my new 15" MBP, 2.53ghz -- as a college freshman this fall, I'm going to need some backup storage, does anyone recommend Time Capsule or another external hard drive (WD mybook)? or both? Thanks!

haha! My sentiments exactly!

I believe Fedex headquarters are in Memphis...

But I don't see why my package has to go to headquarters before going to the final destination...

If I were running Fedex, it would have gone from Shanghai China directly to Los Angeles, if possible. At the very least, from Alaska to Los Angeles.

But hey...at least my computer will be well-traveled by the time it reaches me. Let's just hope it also has a sense of humor and ambitions too...

Oh gawd sorry for all the typos! :D I was sleepy but had to say that haha.

I wish macbook pro was well traveled like yours :( now when it comes it's gonna nag me and say " NovemberWhiskey's MBP got travel from Alaska! Why can't I?!" and then I'll say," Why can't you just be a happy Macbook! " and that will slowly turn into the abyss of our relationship until I see a new model in which it will get jealous and we'll seperate. Wait what were we talking about?

There are always student discounts on Apple Care, no matter when you buy the machine. Call Apple or try logging into your selecting your school at the online Apple Store.

Just FYI, Fedex is based in Memphis, so almost all packages get routed through there. That's why some West Coast people are having their computer go across the country and back.

woo hoo new 15" MBP 2.8/256ssd just arrived !!

Got here about 20 minutes ago, LOVE IT ... I knew I would :)

this notebook will take a lot of the stress and workload away from my MBA and my MBA can now go back to being the untethered netbook I meant it to be.

What to buy next as my desktop machine?? An iMac, MacPro or another MBP connected to a 24" ACD used primarily as a desktop.

Screen and Keyboard sure is incredible on the MBP's... here's to hoping you all like your new arrivals as much as I like mine !!!

I had my 15" MBP for a day then the video card died, I'm currently waiting for my replacement

That sucks. I was really hoping Apple would at least try and make it up to me or something. Itunes gift card perhaps. Maybe I am silly to think they should apologize for the brand new 2000 dollar machine that only worked a week. Or maybe I am just crazy that way. :)

I just asked for free AppleCare, but they wouldn't do it because I was already getting the education discount. No big deal, but it was worth asking. So if anyone has to return their MacBook ask, you never can know what kind of mood the service rep is in.

Damn it! I was at home, looking out the door. No FedEx truck arrived at the scheduled time and 20 minutes later the tracker updated saying that noone was home and there was a delivery exemption! Ridiculous

Hmm, seems like orders usually go from Shanghai to Anchorage, but mine went from Shanghai to Guangzhou and hasn't updated tracking info in about 28 hours. Should this be anything to worry about, or has anyone else's package taken this route? I live in New York, for reference.

I wouldn't worry, mine didn't update until about 12 hours before I got it. You have to remember it's nightime in Shanghai right now. Also, my replacement MBP is awaiting shipment.

Looks like ours may be in the same shipment. Mine left GUANGZHOU CN at Jun 29, 2009 12:13 AM. I'm in LA waiting for the shipment...

Got my 13" 2.53 Ghz 128SSD Today!

Got mine today. Actually I ordered it and it shipped to me last week but it sadly had a nasty dent on the bottom of it. Called Apple and they replaced it and I got it today at 10:20 am. Beautiful, no dead or stuck pixels, no scratches, no dents or dirt behind the glass. :)

Enjoy the SSD :)

I just got my 17" anti-glare (normal HD). After 2 months of using a 1st-gen macbook air, this feels so much mightier in every way. :)

Impressions on my first Mac

Just got my 15" UMBP. The June 2009 standard 2.53 model. This after twenty-plus years of DOS/Windows, which I still make my living with at work.

It *is* a beautiful machine. Thin, tight hinge, no loose spots. Clearly you get a well built machine for your money.

The screen looks great. I haven't really used it in a bright environment yet (I will, my house is very open to the sun) but so far no problem with glare. Colors are very vibrant and clear. Setup was easy.

Noise hasn't been a problem at all. This thing is whisper quiet; I can't even tell when the disk is spinning. No fan noise either. It does get a bit hot when it is working very hard (like importing my photo library in Lightroom) but for casual use it is no hotter than my Lenovo.

Ergonomically it is a wash. I have been using Lenovo Thinkpads for years and I'm well adapted to the trackpoint. Selecting/clicking without taking your hands off of the keyboard is a real plus that I'm going to miss. This is especially true since the upper portion of the trackpad on the Mac is so resistant to clicking. I find myself reaching for the lower third of the trackpad, which is sometimes awkward. However, the multi-touch gestures on the trackpad do help make up for this; once your fingers are on the pad you can do more before taking them away again.

The keyboard is just okay. The Lenovo keyboards are better in my opinion. It is easier to know where your fingers are, and know that you've pressed a key (just once). I find myself making more mistakes (I'm a touch typist) and looking at my fingers more often.

Oh, one weird thing: When I log on or start the machine it makes a very kazoo-like sound for a few seconds. I assume this is some sort of default greeting sound, but it sure sounds bizarre.

Just got my 15" MBP. I went with the 2.8GHz model, with the standard 4GB of RAM and upgraded 500GB HDD @ 7200 RPM. This thing is a beast. I'm totally stoked.

Hi,

I am expecting a new 17" MBP soon!! I just wanted a bigger screen - anything I should know or do - am upgrading from an older 15" Intel 2.2ghz MBP running on Tiger. I really hope I did the right thing! Apple have kept the express card slot on these for some reason when they got rid of them on everything else??I have heard the screens on these new ones are pretty amazing so I am really looking forward to seeing it in action!

I am wondering if I should get Fusions/Parallels and if so, how I should set up the 500GB hard drive - I certainly want to keep my mac safe from viruses and malware - what do most people do - partition the hard drive and have one for windows and one or OS X? What sort of amount should be allocated to each partition?

I have a programme called "Crossover" from Codeweavers that lets one get to Windows from OS X but I still can't understand how it works and apparently it will only work with IE-7? What I am worried about is that as I would be accessing windows via OSX with Crossover, would I be making my entire system vulnerable to malware & hacking? I am not sure! If this "Crossover" app is actually quite good and safe, would I be better just forgetting about Fusions/Parallels and partitioning my hard drive?

Thanks,

Bazzy!

WOW, never heard the startup chime described as a Kazoo, but to each their own. If you have seen Wall-E it should be the same exact sound Wall-E makes when he boots up. Gratz on the switch.

Being a part-time Geeksquad Tech I get to touch a lot of PC's, and I have the exact opposite opinion on Keyboard layout and touch pad. I don't think you can get any better than a good Mac. The multi-touch makes it all worth while, and I often find myself getting extremely annoyed at the fact that I can do what I want when I am working on a PC laptop with the pointer.

Ordered my 15" last tuesday, 3.06 with SSD, had it friday! I couldn't believe it. It showed in the shipping status as being in China yet and wouldn't be showing up until yesterday. But nope. Gotta love Apple. I love the speed of the SSD, everything just POPS right open. Boot time of 12 seconds from complete power down. LOVE IT! Runs cooler than my wife's early 2009 17"

Shouldn't sound like a kazoo, that could be a problem. When you start up it should make a low noise, hard to describe, but much lower pitch then a kazoo. If you are worried, record the sound and post it here. Should be easy to determine.

EDIT- Here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=By1Jb13QYb8 Should sound like the last one on that video, otherwise, you have a problem.

17"

I don't think it is the startup chime. That runs fine. All other audio runs fine. More like a 'log in' sound, but as I'm learning Macs don't have such a thing.

I'm beginning to fear that there is some odd complication with the sound 'card'.

Thank you. No, it doesn't sound remotely like any of those sounds. Is this something I can address by taking the machine to one of the Mac stores, or do I need to go some other support route?
