I have now had my 15" MBP 2.8 GHz for ten days and absolutely love it. I upgraded from a mid 2005 iBook G4 1.42 Ghz and the difference in performance is amazing. I generally think that the slickness of OS X means that even old hardware works well, but as I wanted to start editing video (incl. HD) and do more advanced photoshop work, the old G4 just was too slow.

I'm now preparing the G4 to sell on to hopefully a Mac newbie.

The things I love are;
- The battery!!
- The display - I'm sitting on the fence as far as anti-glare goes. The iBook as anti-glare and I found it had a softening effect on the display. From what I have seen on a 17" MBP with anti-glare, the higher resolution of display is harder hit. I also generally use the MBP in areas where glare isn't really a problem.
- The SD slot. Great for uploading pictures at lightning speed. Although I suspect an express card slot SD reader would be just as quick. Would have preferred Apple to have kept the expresscard slot, but bundled a SD reader.
- The slick design. It's pure eye-candy.
- The speed of the machine.
- The dual graphics cards. I only use the 9600 occasionally, but do intend to play more games on this, as my old PC gaming machine has died and I have no intention of buying another windows machine.
- It's all so quiet!! Even when the fans need to kick in, it is very quiet and hardly noticable.
- Backlit keyboard and auto-dim function that dims the keyboard and display. (although I think it can be over-sensitive and adjust a little too much!!).
- The trackpad. I did start out by using it more or less the same as the old trackpad and button, but then got used to using the whole pad for scrolling and pressing (incl. two fingers for alt).

What I don't like;
- It's so nice that my girlfriend always wants to be using it!!
- Dirt - For some reason, I am finding that the alluminium case attracts a lot of dirt. I'm currently giving it a good wipedown once a week.
- For some reason, my MBP goes into hiberation mode (not sleep) once the battery is drained. If I'm using the 9600 when this happens, coming out of hiberation sometimes brings the screen back with corrupt graphics for about 2 mins.
- In the UK, pricing of MBP is still high compared to US pricing at current exchange rates. I effectively got a £1:$1.35 exchange rate at the time when the actual rate was £1:$1.56. Luckily I get 8% discount on Apple products through my employer, so it wasn't as painful!

I am very much looking forward to Snow Leopard and OpenCL and GCD. Does anyone yet know for sure whether the GPU not currently being used, can be addressed by OpenCL? If so, I can imagine this becoming a dream games machine as you could be using the 9600 for game graphics and the dual core CPU and 9400 for all other processing. The only downside to this is that it would consume a large amount of power, leading to very short battery times!!

My 17" MBP got shipped early Thursday morning from the Shanghai factory and during those 4 days it has travelled as far as.... Shanghai Airport. :D
I say 4 days as I'm sure it won't move an inch before monday at the earliest. :(

So I am about to become MacBook Pro-less. Mine shipped with faulty RAM and possibly the HD, so it's DOA. Their sending me a brand new one with the faster shipping. This one has to go back. Luckily I was able to use CCC to make a bootable clone so I won't have to spend 7 hours again moving all my files.

This is EXACTLY why I decided not to go with a BTO. In my case, all I was updating was the HD to the 7200 option. Seems like the new 7200s have issues anyway. I made them change my replacement to a standard config so I can walk into an Apple Store and exchange it if anything goes wrong.

Good luck on your new machine. I'd be pissed if it happened to me.

I am sort of pissed off, my 5 year old eMac and 4 year old iBook have never had this many problems. I considered downgrading the configuration, but I got such a good deal with the education discount that I wanted to keep the upgrades. Plus, it was most likely the RAM not the HD.
I am just glad this didn't happen the first week of college. Hopefully my new one will get here by Thursday or Friday, and it will work. I love this computer, it's a great machine, but I'll love it more when it actually works.

I thought about demanding a 256GB SSD upgrade for the inconvenience, but I decided to keep the screen cloth and Apple stickers instead. (Yay, that's me sticking it to Apple.)

Wait, what was your problem? The 7200 RPM HDD?

And they only offered you a cleaning cloth and stickers?

The problem was the RAM and possibly the HD, but they couldn't be sure. Finder was freezing up, beach ball of death, dock stuck magnified, upper right icons appearing/disappearing, Safari closing, mail staying open, startup sequence looping and not booting, etc.

I said I was considering demanding a HD upgrade (just because an SSD would be nice), but settled for keeping the stickers and cleaning cloth (by not sending those back with the laptop.)

If the new one gives me any problems what so ever I'll probably try and get free AppleCare, but I'll let it slide for now. So my order has gone through and I should get a tracking number in the next day.

Just ordered a 13" Macbook Pro! Can't wait for it to get here, says up to eight days for shipping, hopefully it comes sooner.

I was going to order the 2.26ghz model with 4gb of ram but didn't want to wait around for shipping. Went straight to the Apple store and got the 2.53ghz today. Couldn't be happier. :D

I guess my MBP is still stuck in AK.

It was released from Int'l shipment at 6PM Ak time on Friday, and it said it was "In Transit Ak".

Didn't say "departed"

Just got my 15" Unibody MBP, 2.8ghz, 500gb @ 7200rpm. LOVE IT. Sooo much nicer in every way to my about 3-4 year old Intel MBP. Even though I wasn't excited about glossy, the colors are TO DIE FOR!

Just ordered my 2.4 15.4" Macbook Pro refurb from Apple :D ittl be here Tuesday! Upgrading from a 13" unibody Macbook.

We have progress!

The carrier's updated to UK Distribution Center and there's a tracking number (albeit a non-working one). Something tells me that I should have a courier name and a working tracking number at some point tomorrow hopefully, and it should get to me by Tuesday. :)

At least I know it's in the same country now, and Blighty's small enough for me to drive and fetch it relatively easily if needs be.

I just got my 13" Pro, 2.26GHz.

I got Best Buy to PM it. LOL I didn't get the $100 CAN off the Pro but I got my 16GB Green nano included for free, no need to wait for rebates.

Ive had my first ever apple laptop, the 13 inch Macbook Pro for a week now and i love it.

Never going back to PC's ever again!

Upgrade Madness

I purchased a refurb 13" 2.4/4GB UMB a few months ago. When I saw the new screens at the Apple Store I was sold. Then the SATA speed issue was revealed, and since I use an Intel X25-M SSD, I sat and waited for a resolution.

When the firmware upgrade was announced I put my MacBook on Craig's list last Monday night. The next morning I had two offers. I bought the 2.26 and upgraded the RAM myself to 4GB. Don't think I'm going to miss that .14 GHz. ;) In the end it cost me $300 to switch MacBooks. Totally worth it. My MBP came with the LP133WX3-TLA1 (9C9F)(LG-Phillips) screen. Calibration with a GretagMacbeth Eye-One made it even nicer. It's so much better than the screen in my UMB, with had an AUO B133EW04 V0.

The keyboard feels a little better, more solid, on the MBP. Firewire is nice to have back, the SD card slot is handy and you can't quibble with a battery that offers more charges over the lisespan and longer battery life.

Had to do an archive and restore since simply using the SSD from the old UMB resulted in a lost sound device. Others have reported firewire not being available also when using the OS from a UMB.

Sweet little machine. The SSD really makes it fly.

I yesterday ordered my new MBP 15", 3.06 Ghz, 500GB 7200, 4GB RAM.
:)

Together with an mStand, G-Tech Q drive 1TB and some other stuff.
Now I have to find a good monitor for all this.

LOL. This package is headed to southern CA, and they went from Alaska to Memphis.

Way to go efficiency!

haha! My sentiments exactly!

I believe Fedex headquarters are in Memphis...

But I don't see why my package has to go to headquarters before going to the final destination...

If I were running Fedex, it would have gone from Shanghai China directly to Los Angeles, if possible. At the very least, from Alaska to Los Angeles.

But hey...at least my computer will be well-traveled by the time it reaches me. Let's just hope it also has a sense of humor and ambitions too...
