I was browsing on Apples refurbished Macs and found a few units I like. Can you experts on here help me out?

Choice #1:
16-inch MacBook Pro 2.3GHz 8-core Intel Core i9
16GB of 2666MHz DDR4 onboard memory
2TB SSD1
720p FaceTime HD camera
AMD Radeon Pro 5500M with 8GB of GDDR6 memory

Choice #2:
16-inch MacBook Pro 2.3GHz 8-core Intel Core i9
32GB of 2666MHz DDR4 onboard memory
1TB SSD1
720p FaceTime HD camera
AMD Radeon Pro 5500M with 8GB of GDDR6 memory

***Both of the laptops are priced at $3479 (Canadian)

Which one would be practical for me to keep for the next 8-9 years. I don't game. Very light LightRoom if at all. Mostly do streaming and browsing along with Word processing. Is the 8GB video card is something I would like to have but would it make a big difference when watching movies and what not?

Thanks

I’m in no way an expert at all but I’d of thought 1TB sufficient enough and the 32GB would be nice so I’d go with that one.

For your use you could save quite a bit of money.

If you don't need 1TB of storage, get this one - https://www.apple.com/ca/shop/produ...2e48080bb9b3c2030c9de1c479585f41d0c6ca6dc2a50

Or if you do need more storage get this https://www.apple.com/ca/shop/produ...2e48080bb9b3c2030c9de1c479585f41d0c6ca6dc2a50

Could save between 500-1000 CAD.

Can I ask why?

You said you don't game, and use word + streaming. Neither of these tasks require a Discreet Graphics Card never mind 8gb?

I just want to future proof my purchase. Now I am thinking that 4gb will do.

Greetings everyone! My new 16" order finally went to "preparing to ship" status today and just wanted to share my excitement. I'm still operating on a very broken 2011 15" macbook pro that has been plagued with issues. I can barely run my image processing applications for my research. I vacillated over what new machine to get, but knew I wanted the bigger screen. I kept it modest and went with the i7 6-core, but did up the ram to 32GB (and a 1TB drive). With the Education discount, it kept things reasonable and I know based on my needs, it will be more than enough for at least 5 years. I'll need to keep the old beast around for a little while to use Photoshop 6 (not supported on catalina), but can't wait for the new machine. I'm a little nervous about all of these kernel panics I've been reading about lately, so hopefuly I don't end up with any of those issues.

At any rate, thanks for many of the useful comments and suggestions everyone. It helped inform my decision.

For some history....here's a little info about my current macbook....

---------------------------------------
So here's what I currently have:
Late 2011, 15” MacBook Pro (8,2)

Primary Use: I’m an Academic/Researcher. I do a lot of sample image processing, Matlab, python, R, coding/compiling, lectures, presentations, photoshop, illustrator, and all other day-to-day regular stuff. This is my primary workstation for work, home, and travel. I don’t use a desktop. Some applications I use are x86 dependent and/or proprietary. I should note that I do also work with some 3D imagery/rendering, as well as a a little FinalCut movie creation/editing.

What it originally came with:
  • 2.2 Ghz Intel Core i7 (Quad Core)
  • 4 GB 1333 MHz DDR3 Ram
  • Integrated Graphics - Intel HD 3000 512 MB
  • Dedicated GPU - AMD Radeon HD 6750M - 512 MB
  • Disk 750 GB 5400-rpm Drive
  • MacOS - Snow Leopard?
What I've upgraded over the years:
  • 16 GB 1333 MHz DDR3 Ram (OWC)
  • 1 TB Solid State Hard Drive (OWC)
  • MacOS (Currently Sierra)
What I’ve replaced:
  • 78 Watt-Hour Replacement Battery (OWC)
  • New Mag-safe power adapter (Ebay)
  • Wifi Bluetooth Flex Cable
  • 2015 - GPU Failed (known Radeon defect) - motherboard replaced under Apple replacement plan
  • 2019 - GPU Failed again (same defect) - Currently using ‘MacBook Pro dGPU Disabler’ and force-running on Intel graphics only.
What is failing:
  • Because of broken dGPU, I cannot connect to an external display without a special USB video dongle/contraption (this stinks for lecturing)
  • Because of broken dGPU, I cannot do heavy image processing/rendering right now. It slows the computer to a halt and spikes thermals.
  • Keyboard - multiple minor issues (some keys don’t respond well or stick, etc)
  • Screen - Some bad pixels
  • Wifi - sometimes drops
  • New Battery - already failing again (holds charge for maybe 2 hrs max)
  • Track pad sometimes doesn’t click fully
  • I cannot upgrade macOS right now because it will break my dGPU disabler and render my laptop a 'brick'
What I love and/or will miss:
  • I LOVE the anti-glare screen and will miss this terribly. I have a 2019 iPad Air that is so glossy to me, I had to buy the ‘Paperlike’ brand screen protector for it to make it more matte (which I highly recommend btw)
  • All of the ports! (and yes, even the DVD player). Not looking forward to dongle hell. I use the ethernet port at work. I'll probably get a thunderbolt mini-hub of some kind.
  • The little battery life indicator button on the side (I know...it's silly)
  • MagSafe power cord!
  • Most of all though, the ability to upgrade it and/or work on it myself.
  • Yes this laptop has had its share of issues, but I always know I can take it apart and tinker with it. Had it not been for the damn Radeon issue, this machine would have done really well over its almost 10 years.

Well it seems apple might be having some manufacturing delays. Originally ordered my high-end MBP16 on July 1st with an estimated arrival date of 13th or 14th. Was looking a bit odd that it was still in processing at this stage (9th). Woke up this morning to the dreaded ... 'it's delayed' email. Has been pushed back to the 23rd / 24th. First time I've ever had apple fail on a delivers by commitment.

Don't be confused in thinking you get AppleCare+. It's just the standard one-year warranty

That's not true, Applecare+ is available and it provides extra benefits
  • Three years (total) limited hardware warranty
  • Three years (total) technical support
  • Coverage for two incidents of accidental damage (subject to a service fee of $99 for screen damage or $299 for other damage
The last one being the important one.

Yes it can be added, but it’s not “included”, which is what I thought the previous message implied. It would make refurbs a much better deal if they did!

I remember when AppleCare used to be included with the student discount. :(

Well, I bit the bullet last night. My 2012, while still functioning, is 8 years old and I decided it was time to upgrade. I do some gaming, and use a Windows install to do it so I wanted Intel. Even though I get a discount on NEW Apple devices through work, it doesn't match the refurb store price, even on a higher spec model from the refurb store.

I grabbed one of the 16" 2.3 8-core i9 machines with the 1TB SSD, Space Grey. I'll have it within a week, then to migrate my stuff and re-build my Windows setup. I also took advantage of the Barclaycard 0% financing, might as well make a few pennies on the money in my savings account while I pay it off.

Been debating on doing this. I have a MBP late 2013 that's still functional, but I can't backup my phone onto this without getting the "don't have enough room on the hard drive" error.

Thing is, my phone has the same amount of memory as this old machine and I'd like to NOT lose the information on my phone. I'm also planning on keeping the current MBP 2013 on Mojave and having the new machine run Catalina/Big Sur.

I plan on keeping the new/refurbished one at least 4 years.

Since I do some gaming on it I've been hoping for 1TB (really don't want to run out of storage) - (I'm not a hardcore gamer by ANY stretch of the imagination)

Edit- Figured out a solution to the backup problem.

Anyone who has ordered a custom spec MBP 16" ... how was your delivery tracking initially? the reason I ask, mine was dispatched from CN on sturday at 17:XX hours ... it shows as picked up on DHL tracking but no further tracking events (it's monday now). I know it's a weekend, but normally i'd expect to see movement even during non work hours.

I ordered a custom spec (Silver 2.4, 64GB, 5600, 1TB) on the 6th. Tracking was progressing well for a couple of days but then hit a delay due to bad weather (Singapore) and no further updates over the weekend. Should get another update today I guess.

Did you get anything beyond 'picked up' ? That's the only message I have since saturday evening. And this is DHL, so not sure how they handle it.

Thats a legit build! I was pumped to pick up a i9, 16gb, 1tb, 5500m 8gb model today, but that build is pretty awesome! Loving mine so far as well. How have your temps been? That was my only concern with not waiting for the refresh.
