Coming from a 2.5ghz i7 16GB 15” mid-2014 MacBook Pro… wonder if I’ll notice a difference! 🤔

I preordered a 16" M2 Max 12/38 32GB/1TB in space gray. I was (and still am) wondering if I will regret my decision as far as the RAM goes, but it's already so expensive...

I'm coming from a 2010 Mac Pro that was aftermarket upgraded with two 6-core 3.33GHz processors and an unflashed nVidia GTX 970. I'm sure the new MBP will blow away the Mac Pro's CPU, but I'm not sure that it will be a big jump with the GPU, unfortunately. I'll have to test it out once I get it. I'd like to use it to run Stable Diffusion locally (and the newly teased IF model by the DeepFloyd group once it is released). I also got tired of having to stay on High Sierra due to the (lack of) GPU drivers and the various rigmarole I had to deal with in order to boot on secondary drives, update the OS, come back to MacOS after booting into Boot Camp, or do any recovery operations.

Ordered a refurbished Macbook Pro 14 M1 Pro base model (16Gb / 512Gb) yesterday. Arriving 23rd Jan. I'm coming from a mid-2015 Macbook Pro 15" 16Gb / 512Gb which I've updated to a 2Tb SSD with an adapter.

It's my first Apple Silicon Macbook so I'm interested to see how fast it is in comparison. First time getting a refurbished unit from Apple as well, hopefully I don't regret that decision.

That's awesome! This is probably the config I'm going to order if I do. Still deciding if I should upgrade my current MBP to another or step down a little for weight and portability and get an MBA instead.

Thanks :D

Which MBP do you currently have?

I sold my 2015 15" MBP recently and had a 14" M1 Pro before I returned it today. Both were Apple Refurbished units.

Let me tell you, it is going to blow your 2015 out of the water performance wise. That's not the most amazing part. It will do it while lasting literally all day on battery. Probably last twice as long as your current one.

I usually do all my Apple devices refurbished (my iPad and Watch were too). You can't tell the difference between new except for the plain white box. If it wasn't for needing WiFi 6E and the 120Hz HDMI I would have kept the 14" M1 Pro.

The 14" MBP is pretty similar dimension wise to your 13" MBP. Go to an Apple Store to tell for sure, but I didn't notice a huge difference between the 3.5 lbs MBP and 2.7 lbs MBA.

If performance isn't the main concern the big difference between the MBP and MBA is the displays and connections. The MBP with the XDR screen and 120hz display looks vastly better.

Also if you use dual monitors you have to go with the MBP. Apple still gimps the MBA with single monitor output. The HDMI and SD Card ports on the MBP come in pretty handy if you need those outputs frequently.

Just pulled the trigger on a refurbished base 14" from Apple.

Tried so hard to wait for the release this Spring but half the screen on my 16" is practically unusable after being dropped. If the update ends up being substantial I can just wait till it hits the refurbished store this fall. Otherwise I'm looking forward to an OLED model in 2024.

Took the one above back to the Apple Store today since they announced the M2 generation on day 11 of my return period. Got pretty lucky on the timing, guess I waited just long enough haha!

Couldn't pass up WiFi 6E, 120Hz HDMI and an extra hour of battery life. Especially since it seems like the OLED models might not debut until 2025 or later now. Back to using a 16" with only half a screen working over the weekend though.

Using a 2021 16" purchased from the refurbished store, which replaced a 2014 13" MBP also from the refurbished store, and using an iPhone 11 Pro from the refurbished store. All 10/10 experiences in relation to buying new in my experience

Yea, you make some very valid points. I think the thing for me is that I've always had an MBP and so it's natural for me to pick up an M2 MBP 14" but realistically a lot of the bells and whistles are really just "nice to have" for me. The better screen, processor, etc. are, however, definitely interesting. I will follow your advice and go check them out at the Apple Store.

$1799? How did you do that? :)

My Refurb M1 Max 16" just arrived and i was looking for reasons to return it. But it's very pristine, as per my usual experience with Apple refurbs.

Also been offered £595 for my 2018 MBP, which helps offset the cost even further. So i'm looking at around £1900 for the specs below with 32GB RAM and 1TB SSD. I'm sold. The M2 equivalent would cost me an extra £890.

So it seems its finally goodbye to Intel/Touchbar/loud fans for me.

I’d check out a base 14” M1 Pro from the Apple Refurbished store. That makes it cheaper than a M2 MBA with the 16GB RAM and 512GB SSD upgrade. So you kinda get everything else for “free”.

The main reason I’d go with the MBA is battery. The display on the MBP is pretty but is also the reason it can’t match the MBA in battery life. Not to say that the 14” M1 Pro is a slouch, either will last wayyy longer than your Intel 13” MBP.

Oh, and the $1799 is through the veteran & military store. Like the education store Apple gives a 10% discount to any veteran/active duty military and their immediate family.

If I didn’t have that discount on the new 14” M2 Pro I would have kept the 14” M1 Pro. It becomes harder to justify the upgrade at $1999.

Just ordered a refurb 14inch M1 Pro, 10/16 core, 16GB/1TB, to replace my 2009 MacBook (2GHz C2D, 4GB, 500GB HD, its third battery is on its last legs). It's only about thirty times faster on GB scores, think I'll notice that! £500+ saving over the M2 equivalent, for my needs and wants definitely the better deal. I could have got an MBA instead, but I thought this was the sweet spot. Looking forward to it.
Got it Thursday. Most impressed, I'm now using it as my daily driver. Encoded a 1080p movie in Handbrake. The Mac Pro was doing 100fps; the M1 Pro was, with the same settings, doing 250.

Received the Macbook Pro 14 this afternoon, went through it with a fine tooth comb. New charging brick, new Magsafe cable. Not a scratch, no marks anywhere. Keyboard clean, no oily finger marks. No scratch marks around any of the ports. Screen is amazing, battery showing 2 cycles!

Came with Monterey, currently loading up Ventura.

Still to load up all the apps onto it but I am very pleased with it!

My M2 Pro 16” MBP has shipped!

99BA6C53-C344-4CE4-B0D6-132D88B055AC.jpeg

Unfortunately its delivery date has slipped - before it was Thu, Jan 26 and now Apple.com is estimating a Fri, Jan 27 delivery. More worryingly though, the UPS tracking number is currently giving me an estimated delivery date of Tue, Jan 31 - which seems like a pretty large discrepancy?

Hoping the Friday date is right, but if not I’m sure it’ll be worth the wait whenever it gets here.
