After sleeping on it, I decided to go with the 12/18 M3 Pro 14 instead. I want to play more with VMs and the Game Porting Toolkit so the extra GPU power and 1 TB SSD will be beneficial.

Does anyone know a way to actually do a down payment when doing the apple card financing on a MBP? I want to get a M3 Max, but I also have $2k I'd like to put down on one to lower that payment on my card and to also fit it under the limit of the card. I didn't see a way to do this online and prefer to do it online.

There isn't a way, you have to have the amount available on the card and then you can pay on it. If you have 2k, how much is the MacBook cost you're trying to buy?

Ended up going with a base Refurb 14" M2 Pro in Silver. Prices in Canadian:

- Refurb base 14" M2 Pro is $2180
- 14" M3 with 16GB RAM is $2350
- Base 14" M3 Pro is $2700

My thinking was the M3 just doesn't make sense at its price long as M2 Pro Refurbs are in stock and the base M3 Pro isn't $520 better than the base M2 Pro. Should be here Tuesday, ready to put this Intel MBP to rest!

Went for a 16” M3 Pro 18Gb 512Gb Silver, delivering on the 7th. I don’t really need any sort of power that the M3 Max provides and since I use iCloud for everything, the base model suits me just fine.
I was on the fence between Silver and Space Black but as I like my laptop to look nice and clean I figured the Silver would be the better option for me BUT I’ll keep a close eye on the reviews for the fingerprints on the Space Black, for future iterations.

Has anyone flipped to "preparing to ship" yet?

I am still at processing and my credit card does not show a charge (though I ordered the Max so my ship date is listed for end of next week).

I ordered a 16" M3 Max in black fully loaded right at launch and got a Nov 7th delivery date. Last night it flipped to "Preparing to Ship."

What sucks, Apple will have their Black Friday deals late November where we’d get a $250 gift card for buying these MacBooks.

Apple historically does not give gift cards for computers that are less than 4 months old for Black Friday. The gift card will most likely only be for the m2 generation.

Placed my order on Halloween. Has not shipped yet. I'm upgrading from an m1 MacBook Air. This is going to be quite the leap. My poor MBA served me well but couldn't handle my workload anymore.

16-inch MacBook Pro - Space Black

Hardware:

  • 36GB unified memory
  • 1TB SSD storage
  • Apple M3 Max chip with 14‑core CPU, 30‑core GPU and 16‑core Neural Engine

returns are extended until january probably because of holidays
Extended return window for holiday sales usually begins ~ somewhere between 11/4-11/8 ish..I don’t think it has been announced yet

update: Started this year on 11/3/23, with items “delivered, received” not necessarily ordered. so, take that for what it is worth

Upgrading from 14" M1 Pro 16GB/1TB unbinned to 14" M3 Pro 18GB/1TB unbinned.

I was going to look at the Max but I don't really do any video editing or anything that would demand that much power. The most taxing thing I do is play BG3. If this is to be believed, it looks like a pretty decent upgrade from M1 Pro:

Apple M3 Pro vs M1 Pro: performance comparison

Pretty much in-line with what Apple stated in their presentation.

I like the 14" for the portability and I have read the battery life of the Max versions of the M series in the 14" form factor can have lower battery life and thermal issues due to running all the extra cores so that plus cost are also reasons for going with the M3 Pro instead of Max (for me). I can save the money I'd use for upgrading to Max to put, along with a trade-in, a newer model in 3 or so years.

Also, I noticed on Apple's website the 14" battery results for the M3 Pro/Max used the M3 Pro. I wonder if they expect the M3 Pro to have the better battery life than the Max.

makes sense as one cannot burn through their return window while waiting for the machine to arrive.

Makes sense, but we HAVE had order date be a factor in triggering the holiday window.. like IF one ordered BEFORE the date, but didn’t receive till AFTER the date - or sometimes announcement, then it was NOT in the holiday return window.
