Bingo. This happens with literally every Apple release. Folks who couldn't bear the thought of showing up to their local Starbucks without the latest Apple device in hand, now desperately seeking co-signs/reassurance from strangers to justify their poor decisions.

A lot of issues (weight, dimensions, pill size) being discussed in here were quite literally public knowledge prior to the phone's release. A simple trip to the Apple store PRIOR to buying the device would've alleviated most of the other things. You could've held the display model for 5 minutes & realized you didn't like the weight, or that the Island extends like 1 or 2mm farther down the screen than the notch did, or that the camera bump is what it is.

At the end of the day, this thread is essentially A.A. for Oniomaniacs, who probably need a lock placed on their credit cards.
And I did do exactly as you say. Don't paint a broad brush.

UPDATE: so last night I bought the iPhone 14 Pro Max. I went into the Apple Store to pick a few things up and decided to grab one to run it hard for the next week to give it more time: to give it its due and proper. I've been using it since last evening (all evening) and all morning. It's the 1 TB Silver model. I ordered the iPhone 11 Pro Max which I pick up tomorrow, and which I may settle on given that is a better design in my opinion and still a good phone.

So far, my experience with the 14 PM is exactly like my testing, and I don't like it any more than I did. It's basically the modern Gordon Gecko phone. It's heavy has hell, thick and chunky, and the camera bump is annoying as I keep having my fingers and hands slide over it (sharp and big protrusion). I also did start to get some finger fatigue last night holding it up. Wasn't terrible but noticeable.

I decided to pull out my iPhone X, and charged it up and updated it to iOS 16. I notice very little difference in the performance of the phones which is hilarious. Sure, the animations are snappier on the 14 PM, but when I'm using the iPhone X I just don't notice it.

Haven't taken too many pictures or much video but that isn't as important to me. The dynamic island is nice. It's not essential though, and I haven't really paid much attention to it other than the pixelated space above the pill is weird. Battery life is good so far. I walked last night with the flash light on the whole time and used the phone the whole time I was walking (1 hour) and the battery didn't drain much.

Durability: the phone dropped last night off my nightstand as it was resting on the wireless charger puck and it just decided to slide off and fall to the hardwood floor. No damage. This was pretty unbelievable to me, so durability wise, pretty impressive.

See, I have a balanced and objective view. But do I like the phone? No, it's the design that is the real challenge. This thing is a brick and it's pretty absurd. Sure, I could opt for the iPhone Plus and perhaps that's an option I should consider, but given that the iPhone 11 PM is a better design and the iPhone Plus isn't really much of an upgrade from the iPhone 11 PM, the 11 PM might be the phone for me.
I love it for the very same reasons that you don’t.

Do you think it would be cost effective to build a home out of iPhone 14 Pro Maxes? So get a bunch of them and stack them together like bricks and build a home that way. I'm sure the home would be one of the most Hurricane proof homes on the planet. And could use some basic glue to lay them like bricks. The only challenge I can see is having to deal with the camera bumps because the phones will not lay flat upon one another. Perhaps put some hay and mud in there and pack it tight to level off each phone.

I'm coming from an iPhone 8 (don't laugh, it has served me really well all these years). To finally upgrade, I pre-odered the 14 pro. Got it in hand and while the 120Hz screen is wonderful, the device is just too damn big and heavy. I have small - medium sized hands. The longer I've had it, the more I think it's the weight that's the problem for me, a bit more than the size.

Additionally, I think that square sides actually do a disservice to the larger phones. I've held an 11 Pro extensively and while it felt larger than the 8, it felt quite a bit smaller than the 14 Pro. This is especially true with cases on - on the iPhone 8 with the rounded edges, the case just rounded over the corner and wasn't as obtrusive like the square ones.

With my 14 Pro disappointment, I then bought a 13 Mini. I love it without a case, but with a case, the square edges still get to me and make the screen feel really small (because your finger can't glide over the edge). I am now going back and forth between whether I should keep that, or get a regular 13/14. As mush as I like the features of the 14 Pro, I don't think it's for me.

13 Mini - small and light. Case with raised, hard edges makes the phone / screen feel a bit too small.
13 / 14 - larger, but still lighter. With case, same problem as the 14 Pro, but still lighter.

Two words. Lost Plot 🤣

This is fascinating... I am wondering what everyone who is returning their phone plans to do in the future....? Switch to Android? So, I went from a regular iPhone 11 to a 14 pro max. I initially didn't buy the X (from my 8 plus) because I didn't like the notch. But then a year later, I realized, the notch is here to stay (for now) and I am not going to buy an Android so I bought the 11. I got used to the notch and didn't mind it at all.

I was excited though, this year, to see the notch transform to something else so I upgraded this year. And now I am thinking that the notch might have been better. The floating pill is definitely more noticeable than the notch but I can live with it and I am sure it will eventually disappear (in my head) as I get more used to it. But I am not going to return the phone because this new design is IT for probably the next 4-5+ years and again, I am not going to switch to an Android so ...? I either accept it, buy an Android, or walk around with my 3-year-old phone for at least 4-5 more years at which time it will be really outdated and eventually won't be supported by Apple. And what if I don't like the next redesign?

Same thing with the weight of the phone. My new pro max is definitely heavier than my regular 11. But it's not a huge difference and I can certainly get used to it and I do love the screen size. It's not like the 15 will be lighter... or the camera bump will be smaller.... so the way I see it, I either decide I want an Apple phone and buy what they offer - realizing there may be a few things I don't like as much - or switch to Android.... yes?
I get the impression that for some people who refuse to buy a particular iPhone it’s a method of protesting. Maybe they believe that if enough people refuse the latest iPhone that Apple will figure out why those people didn’t buy it and change the iPhone more to their liking.

For me, there’s so much more to love than the few things I’d change if I could.

I think it's more simple than that: people just won't spend money on something that they don't like.

The "Pro" phones are 15-20% heavier than the "not-pro" alternative. If you like to use the phone with one hand, perhaps supported entirely by your pinkie, you will probably have a better time with the "not-pro" phone.

You absolutely can use the "Pro" phone with one hand, but there really should be no argument that a phone that is 20% lighter would be more comfortable to hold.

And 15 minutes spent holding the phone in an Apple Store will never be representative of real world usage. Apple is confident enough in their products to offer a 14 day, no-questions-asked return policy, why should people feel bad for taking them up on this if they are unhappy with the device? The "64" poll respondents that returned their phone are not why the popular models are out of stock worldwide.

Completely agree! Just to add to what you said, I think for some they can brag with their head held high that the latest iPhone was not good enough for them so they returned it rather than just saying they are skipping this year. I would hope the iPhone is no longer a status symbol in the US but I have no idea. Everyone I know has one so who cares anymore.

As someone holding their 14 Pro with one hand as I type this, I’m just flabbergasted. 😅

Also, how do people use their phones in bed? I’m always on my side, so I don’t feel the weight there either.

Phone in my pocket and case, and I can barely feel it at times that I have to check that it’s there.

Sorry, isn’t that what you just did? You didn’t like the new iPhone so much that you started this thread. Then you actually buy the iPhone and write:
So far, my experience with the 14 PM is exactly like my testing, and I don't like it any more than I did.

Personally, I don’t understand the conundrum. What do you learn after buying it that you can’t learn by researching the iPhone online or testing the iPhone in the store as you did?

There are a lot of people who know they really want the new iPhone but they have to wait on one because of all the buying/returning people.

There are many people out there who need to find others to support whatever decision they have made or will make.

You don't have the Max.

Let me back up so people understand why I'm buying a phone. Is my iPhone 12 perfectly good? Yes. I have one big problem with it: I can't reliably type on it. When Apple put the stupid emoji and microphone buttons on the bottom of the keyboard thereby raising the keyboard up along with making the space button smaller and other changes... it totally screwed me up. I'm not alone in this but it appears I'm part of a subgroup who just can't get accustomed to the keyboard layout and position.

So the bigger screen... in my testing... I could type a lot better because the screen is bigger and the keys are bigger. So that is one main reason why I'm buying a phone. I've had the 12 for the past 2 years and have at times wanted to throw the phone because I can't reliably type on it. The Max is much better. Still not perfect, but a big improvement for me.

This has been a struggle for me... and given that the modern Max iPhone design is something I dislike, it's kinda sent me into a tailspin. I hate Android and am bought into Apple so here I am. I have the 11 PM on order and also have the iPhone X but the 11 PM is a better phone and will give me a better typing experience. So likely I will end up with an 11 PM.

Exactly ever since installment plans why would it be a status symbol. Maybe the original or the last ones you have to cough up a few hundred on a contract...

Apple products in general are still viewed as status symbols by many superficial types. iPhones especially, are treated like jewelry, purchased primarily to be flaunted or shown off. Many nowadays, seem to be more concerned with simply being seen with the latest devices, rather than for actual use.

I totally agree! I guess some feel they must love every single thing about it and a couple of not-so-great things (out of a zillion great features) makes it not worth having. I actually used to be that way years ago, but have since evolved to realize that there really are very few things that I consider 100% perfect so if I love most things about it, I am fine settling with a few minor things that I wish could be different.

Fair points. But all subjective. Sorry.
