Hey everyone, quick question about RAM. Since they're charging around £150 in the UK for another 2x2GB to get the 8GB config, I figured I could get that cheaper elsewhere (say, half the price). As long as it's 1333Mhz DDR3 SDRAM, it should work right? Is there any risk to mixing brands?

No, it's fine as long as you use good quality. I recommend Crucial. About £76 (take another 7% off with Quidco) for the upgrade. I added 2x4gb sticks from crucial to the 2x2gb Apple supplied in my iMac 27" and it runs beautifully.

How big is the upgrade from core 2 duo to the i3 on the 27 inch? Also is the i5 worth the upgrade because the i5 is only a dual core?

Yes. Even 1066MHz works but then the stock RAM will be underclocked to run at 1066MHz as well so buy 1333MHz

Now the question is, do I wait until the possible iLife update in a couple weeks? Wouldn't want to have to pay for a brand new iLife a couple weeks after buying an iMac.

There will likely be up-to-date program which gets you iLife '11 for ~10 bucks

I have just last week purchased the entry level 27inch iMac with Core 2 Duo processor following the death of my old 24 inch.

I see we now have an upgraded i3 Processor and better graphics card available on the models released today.

I am obviously within the 14 day no questions asked return period. Instinct says I should pack it up and go and get an upgrade....

Is it safe to say the enhancements are going to be worth the trouble?

Yes, go for it. It will at least add resale value and new is always new

You might as well, just to get rid of the core2duo.

Perfect, thanks for the info!

hellhammer, what do you think about ati radeon 5750, its the mobile version right? isnt that crap?

allthough its has 1gb of vram

An article a while back hinted at apple eating up a mass stock of 5750s with 800 shader cores, which would indicate that they are desktop 5750s. However, apple could have also put mobility 5850s in the iMacs and called them 5750s. No one knows for sure. Going from mobility 4850 to mobility 5750 would be a big downgrade.

Can't be mobility because it would be a huge downgrade in performance. It's "Juniper" based chip. The name likely refers to the desktop chip but I'm guessing it's underclocked and is likely little faster than mobility 5850 is.

Yes, good point, hopefully someone can adress this when they get their imacs

Anyways what do you all think about the new imacs?

I think the 21.5 inch models got a nice upgrade. The high end models? We're gonna have to wait to see what those ati 5670 and ati 5750 REALLY are.

I waitied out for these hoping for USB 3.0, so I am a little dissappointed as it was rumoured! But I take the plunge and get one anyway! :)

I was also waiting for USB 3.0; however, I am going to wait for the WWDC / Summer 2011 update which will hopefully bring: HDMI, USB 3.0, faster firewire, Sandy Bridge, Light peak and (hopefully) blu ray.

im kinda undecided on what model to get, im also not experinced with that gpu, so im waiting for user to post reviews and vids on youtube to decide what the gpu can handle. if its poor then its mac pro for me.

these are my option

im going for dual core i5 3.6 ghz BTO
or quad core i5 2.8 ghz

both with 5750

what do you guys think, high end dual core 3,6ghz or i5 quad core

Desktop 5750 has 720. I guess TMraven just made a typo, it's so busy here. We will know what it really is when someone gets one. Mobility 5850 and 5870 have 800 cores while desktop 5750 has 720

hopefully i'll be able to get my hands on one soon! i've got an interview at the apple store today and if i get the job my self congratulations gift will be the top end standard channel config. if i don't get hired (iGod forbid) then it's back to saving $$$ for me.

I bought my iMac last month I was worried about USB 3.0 and new design facelift but as i guessed quiet update now I can sleep the video card may have been bumped but within 3 years from today hopefully I can get an iMac with lightpeak, blu ray as apple cannot escape it for Ever unless they make the iMac driveless and a video card of 2gbs.

However I'am placing bets on design facelift at next years WWDC.

back to school sale

I've been waiting a few months for the imac to update. I've been planning on buying my girlfriend one and im ready to make the move now.

the problem is i want to utilize the back to school sale for the free ipod touch. i graduated 2 years ago and no longer have a valid letter of enrollment or valid .edu address.

she is going to grad school this fall is it possible to still get the benefits of the sale by using her current enrollment letter or .edu email address and still be able to finance it in my name on my own card through best buy for example? any help would be greatly appreciated.

In the UK they do not care I have ordered Macs in my name by remoting into a computer on my university campus and i graduated 3 years ago!

So you should be fine paying! :) They dont care they still make a sale! :)
