Looks like I was right on the 5750 gpu instead of mobility 5850/5870, now the only thing to ask is if that 5750 is an underclocked desktop/ stock desktop or mobility. Mobility would make no sense tho, as mobility 5750 is downgrade from mobility 4850.

They actually used the 3.6ghz clarkdale, that's pretty baller. Also looks like they found out they could put 1333mz ram in the iMacs like many of us have found out earlier.

If it's mobility, it's a HUGE downgrade in performance. Desktop 5750 is same as mobility 58xx so Apple just decided to save some $

I'm a bit dissapointed with the fact that the standard cpu for almost all models is i3.. Am i the only one?

Question?

How much better is the i7 2.93 going to be versus the i5 2.8 as far as overall speed goes? I know that everyday apps they are going to be essentially the same but yes, I am going to be running a lot of FCP and Cinema 4D. Photoshop and I am pretty sure will run the same speed on either chip as well as Dreamweaver and the like.

Is it worth me getting the i7 for Final Cut Pro work? It is so hard to find benchmarks for programs using FCP and that is really all I care about here. Is it worth an extra $200 or can I just be happy with a standard top 27in $1999 model? What do you guys think?

:confused::confused::confused::apple::rolleyes:

Yeah, that's my mindbreaker right now.. Is the i5 worth it over the i3 in terms of general performance / gaming?

Only an underclocked 5750 is same as mobility 58**. It'd be interesting to know if apple did in fact underclock it!

I'll be waiting on some people's experiences with the new high end 27 inch before I decide to complain about my iMac's screen. :p

Also, clarkdales aren't that much of an upgrade over core2duos as some might think.

I'm also wondering since apple officially supports SSDs in iMacs, if it'd be possible to go to an apple store and get one of their guys to put an your own SSD in an iMac without voiding the warranty, hm..

Nothing compared to the advantage of an i3 over a Core 2 Duo. i3 is one serious speed upgrade over yesterday's machine :)

So, in short, a base spec vanilla iMac is all I need to order for a good few years of Pro Tools related fun?

Ouch. Apple have brought up the UK store all messed up. The links to the new iMac and Magic Trackpad pages are there but the links behind them are partially missing

Definitely. I run Logic on my 2.0GHz C2D and a more than 3GHz i3 is going to blow that away in terms of performance. The only decision to make is whether you want the better storage space on your internal drive IMO.

Quick question for you guys with more experience in these issues. How soon will the authorized resellers (amazon, best buy, bhphoto) start getting these in stock and up on their websites.

BestBuy or Amazon would preferably work better for me (best buy close to home, but no apple store for a couple of hours.) Just wondering...looking to make a purchase next week when I get paid again!

Mobility 5870 is faster than desktop 5750. 5850 is slower due lower clock speed but before we know the clocks of 5750, it's hard to say how much. Anyway, it's a nice upgrade as it has more VRAM

Okay - you guys are smarter than me. I've read this forum daily (hourly) for months, and TODAY decided to get an account to ask this question:

I want an iMac for my recording studio.

I want the best one I can get. I assumed 27inch i7 is fastest, but what does the lower ghz mean in terms of speed?

Thanks!

so whats upgraded on the 27" I don't understand high tech specs

Well the previous lower end 27 inch was stuck with core2 duo and 4670. The new lower end 27inch features dual core clarkdales that can go up to 3.6ghz, as well as (desktop?) graphics card from ati's 5k series. I can't believe they got that desktop card to fit in the 21.5 inch. Makes you wonder if apple's calling it 5670 when it's really something else? Higher end 27 inch features a bit higher clocked lynnfields of the same product line, with desktop 5750 gpu. Now all iMacs have option for SSD as either main drive or as maybe their cd drive.

There is a hug price increase.

What about i3 3,20 Ghz vs Core 2 Duo 3,06 Ghz?

And 4670 256 vs 5670 512?

But it's desktop part. Anyway, there is 5670 in iMac so it has to be desktop!!!

VERY good news!!!! And 1GB GDDR5!!!

I don't think the 5670 is anything to get very excited about to be honest. The processor upgrades are modest. I would have been far more excited by faster firewire and USB 3 support.

SSD as an option is very nice. But it will add a huge amount to the price of an i5 or i7 model.
