According to some rumours iOS 10 could change drastically the iOS user experience. This is due to a widespread criticism about the iOS interface, which is accused of being too old fashioned. Do you agree?
I for one, would love to see a major redesign for iOS 10 that improves the appearance and functionality of the devices it will run on. It will give Apple a chance the right the UI wrongs they made starting in iOS 7. Speaking of which, it would definitely be a wise move for Apple to change up the look of iOS to avoid becoming stale again.

I really don't care what it looks like - I care what it does and how. Smart Phones aren't art they are computers.

I use this feature all the time already. Go to Settings > General > Accessibility > then turn Speak Selection on. Now whenever you select some text you will get an option to have spoken too you. Its very very helpful to me and how I read all news articles many long post here on MacRumors.

Thanks for the tip!

Perhaps a better way to handle memory. This seems to be the biggest concern of iPhone owners. "I'm out of memory I can't take any photos!". I know they've implemented iCloud for this reason but Apple should explain it better for the general population on how they can use this without using device storage.

Maybe Apple should just freaking discontinue the 16GB model already!

  • 2 different night modes : one that makes all white apps black, and one that removes the blue shades off of every pixel in the screen (blue, according to studies, counters our natural sleep cycle)
  • Interface - New visuals - Never been a fan of the flat interface in iOS, they got OS X right though
  • Springboard - Completely revamped, Integrated widgets and modulable icon sizes and whatnot
  • Under-the-hood - Fix all your broken APIs (SpriteKit...), make it faster and more flexible for future development - In other words, all apps coded in Swift 2.1 or 3.0 and low-level code fixes.
  • Maps - New interface (Never liked it) and Transit in Montreal and the surroundings
  • Mail - Give us more power user features, more sorting options, mass delete, a more convenient way to search through joined files and pictures and whatnot.
  • Stock apps deletion - Possibility to delete stock apps or "Switch" them - Apple has a challenge here because many things are tightly integrated through stock apps - Please define what's necessary and qualify some apps that meet the requirements and allow us to delete the stock app and switch to another one
  • HomeKit - Unification (I don't want to be flooded with 3rd-party apps for each of my IoT devices). Tighter integration with IFTTT.
  • Camera - Possibility to take square videos
  • Notes - Export to PDF
  • Keyboard - Radically improved auto-correct (not just orthography plz) AND allow a full-size landscape keyboard on the 6 and 6s even if I didn't select the option to make everything on the screen bigger
  • App Store - Just fix this broken thing already. It has never loaded fine on any of my iOS devices in the last 2-3 years.
  • Less aggressive Alert sounds - Because right now, when Siri wakes me up as I wanted, I wanna throw my iPhone out the window
  • Siri - Open it up to 3rd-party apps. Second thing, I can't use it in French (my mother tongue) because I use it more often than not for the Music app, and all my bands have English names... Make it possible to combine languages when I make a query to for specific songs and bands.
  • Preview.app - You have it on the Mac, bring it in iOS. I wanna be able to edit PDF files, annotate PDF and pictures, etc. Probably something similar to Skitch, but with an interface that actually makes sense.
  • More iCloud storage - At this point, follow your competitors and triple or quadruple our free storage.
  • Grapher - Has always been cool on the Mac, never really been updated though, would be nice in iOS.
  • 3rd-party Keyboards - I don't know what's wrong, but they all suck. Are the APIs problematic maybe ? Are Apple's standards for acceptation on the App Store too low ?

Great list! The only thing I would add to it is a redesign of the music app that resembles and functions more like the previous stock music apps on iOS. Also, split the radio and streaming functionalities into separate apps.

I'm personally quite content with iOS 9.2 on a 6S. Outside the usual speed and battery improvements there's only one MASSIVE gaping request.

Ability in settings to allow videos to rotate to landscape WHILE still in rotation lock!

You have no idea how badly I want this. Seriously surprised we haven't seen it yet. Literally the only thing I find wrong with iOS.

Edit:

Sorry there is one thing I despise about iOS 9 and that's the music app. It's utterly s*** compared to the older versions - hey Apple, I don't want to 'connect' with artists or pay for Apple Music, just let me listen to my collection.

And reading through the list there's some good ideas. Like getting rid of some stock apps - an Apple Watch app? Really? C'mon Apple. Also a contacts app when I have the phone app is just annoying, something I've wanted rid of.

I completely agree with you, the music app is god awful now, there's literally no point in using an iPhone (or iPad) as an iPod anymore. It's a terribly designed and laid-out app that sidelines your personal local collection in favor of Apple shoving their streaming service down everyone's throats.

As for the stock apps, certain ones such as Find My iPhone, Find My Friends, Podcasts, iBooks, etc. were once optional downloads found in the App Store before Apple decided to bake them into the OS so if they wanna start giving their customers the option to delete those 1st party apps, there's literally no excuse for them not to. As for pre-loaded apps such as Tips and the Apple Watch, they're either unnecessary or essentially an advertisement for a product not every single iPhone user is rushing out to buy.

When it comes to the quality of Apple's software, the most obvious flaws are in the UI and the overall performance of the OS. But one overlooked aspect is the fact that under Tim Cook, we've seen a lot more bloatware from Apple's latest software releases which Steve Jobs would be furious over.

When they do stuff like this, I really do feel like Apple is starting to become a bit more like Microsoft.

I want the speed and stability that was promised in iOS 9. GET RID OF THE JITTER and LAG!

Beyond that, why can't we airplay to multiple speakers?
I'd also like to be able to download files to iCloud Drive. iOS really needs a better file management system. The current one is so simple that it becomes annoying to work with. Customisable control centre would be great. Also fix the music App. I want my artists, songs and albums across the bottom. Why can I not have that, I've got no interest in Apple music.

Both of these. Particularly the preview App, right now if I want to annotate a PDF without a third party App, I have to markup in mail then screenshot it, which is super annoying.

I agree with you. Been using iOS daily since I first got an iPhone 3GS. While I think it's a great OS and I'm really happy with it the bloat ware is getting ridiculous now.

I would really love to see something that probably no one in Cupertino or the US would really understand. Make SIRI multilingual! At the moment language for Siri is a setting. As long as this is the case SIRI acts and reacts as if there is only one language. This may be fine in the US, but in Europe this makes SIRI useless. I can never use it: CarPlay doesn't work as it is baked in deeply, Siri doesn't understand German names as it is set in English, even if I use the horrible bastardised Siri pronunciation it doesn't recognise it. It can only recognise English name in my address book, or read English messages etc. It even keeps wanting to search in the US as it automatically assumes that English must mean US!! So much for location awareness. If I change the setting to German (which I am not) it's just the other way around.
The same with keyboards, I am so fed up reading gibberish after typing because the keyboard is always NOT in the language you want to type in and there is no way to easily recognise it
So pretty please Apple show us cultural diversity means something.....

I wonder if Apple will make iOS 10 more like the watchOS style with circular icons in an infinite grid which you pan and zoom through. I'm not sure it would work on the phone but I'm not ruling out it could somehow too.

It would ditch the homepage folders and pages and have just one massive grid sprawling from the centre. Panning and zooming would increase or decrease the size (Pinch to zoom would replace what the crown does on the watch) and icons could have a motion effect on them similar to the Apple TV icons.

The grid could automatically organise itself based on last usage, so most used apps are in the centre. A new Siri button in the middle would merge with Spotlight and allow text input in addition to voice for commands, queries and searches.

They could either go all out with this or have a mix which retains a dock and folders but has the infinite springboard.

And then iOS can be unusable as the Apple Watch.

I'd like to see the following:
-Deeper app linking so apps can share stuff to one another much easier
-Default apps
-FIX THE DAMN THIRD PARTY KEYBOARDS!!!!!!!!!!
-Give widgets on home screens if we want
-Allow us to put homescreen icons anywhere we want to put them
-Dark mode
-Support for using PS or Xbox controllers over an OTG cable
-Extreme battery saver mode
-Customisable control center
-Support mice/trackpads (More so for the iPad Pro than anything else)

Good suggestions. I'd add two more:

1. Make all iPads location aware. Build GPS into new non-cellular models. Allow location sharing with iPhones on older models.

2. Radically improve the Hunspell checker used by OS X and iOS. The current vocabulary is pitiful, basically that of a college sophomore. The lookup for misspelled words is dreadful. Set as a goal being as good as Google's 'did you mean' suggestions.

"widespread criticism about the iOS interface, which is accused of being too old fashioned"?

The biggest issue of the iOS interface is not necessarily how it's laid out but how it looks. It's way too flat, dull and cartoonish looking.

I think future iOS updates should take a few notes from the current OS X UI: bring some of the depth and shadowing back, more detailed and consistent icons, actual buttons and much less white!

I agree about that, but that's somewhat different than the stated "widespread criticism" of iOS because "it's too old fashioned".

  • Better keyboard support:
    • Universal ESC shortcut (many keyboards seem to be missing this but there is 3rd party software support). Ex: CTRL+[, CTRL+` or something.
    • The keyboard navigation in general goes 90% or less. For instance, you can search in spotligh, safari and other places, but you can't use arrow keys to highlight the result you want and hit RETURN to select!?
  • Better sidebar view navigation including all of these:
    • more than 1 giant icon across (customisable option)
    • list view
    • scroll-down to search for specific app.
How about 9.2 or 9.3 instead of waiting for 10? These are just unbaked iOS9 features really.

My current wish is for the the music app to have a shuffle album mode, much like the iPod classics. This would play an album through in the correct track order then pick another album at random. Many have wanted this 'feature' since the first iPhone yet Apple doesn't add it, how much could this take? On long trips this how I prefer to listen to my library. Evidently a jailbroken iPhone can do this by editing a plist file, but as far as I know you can't jailbreak 9.2.
