I've done some more research, and I definitely will not recommend Spirit2Pwn. Spirit2Pwn includes copyrighted Apple code, a big problem that threatens the legitimacy of the jailbreak community. And it is falsely credited to GoJonnyBoi and msft -- who have disavowed it.

Ah, I never thought about that. How does one create a custom code that does the exact thing as the original code?

You have to design the tool in such a way that it takes any Apple code it needs to modify either from the device itself (like blackra1n/Spirit) or from a legitimately-downloaded firmware file supplied by the end user (like redsn0w/PwnageTool). It is not illegal to distribute a tool to modify copyrighted code, only to distribute that code itself.

I have an iPhone 3gs 3.1.3 from the UK.
Since 3 Months i am trying to unlock and jailbreak it coz its stuck to the emergency screen. I dont have 3.1.2 shsh and it was never jailbroken so far ... I am lost and i really wanna use my iphone... Please help me i am so desperate

I tried sn0wbreeze and i get error 1600 blackra1n doesnt work ...
Should i buy some kinda software ?!:(:(:(:(:(:(:(:(

The only jailbreak available for your firmware version is Spirit, which, sadly, for technical reasons, cannot hacktivate the phone. You still need to obtain an official carrier SIM to use just to activate your phone. Once that's done, you can jailbreak with Spirit and unlock with ultrasn0w.

after you downgrade to 3.1.2 then you run blackra1n, you CANNOT run blackra1n on 3.1.3 you should have known that by now if you did ANY research!!!!

once you got blackra1n on 3.1.3 then follow this thread from there. judging by your current issue I dont suggest you try this because it doesnt seem as though you know what your doing, and probably will mess up your phone

I cannot downgrade it coz i cannot get the 3.1.2 SHSH Umbrella says that it is too late.... What can i possibly do now ?!

Its from the UK with the o2 carrier, will any o2 sim do ?!

he is correct, the only way to activate your phone is through an official carrier SIM... that I know of...

i didnt read the portion where it was stuck on activation screen... so hmmmm
 
3.1.2 4.0 JB - unknown error 29/1600

I have a jailbroken 3GS with old iboot/3.1.2/05.11.07 that I've been trying to upgrade to JB iOS4.0 with PwnageTool 4.0.1 and am having trouble.

iTunes 9.2 gives me unknown error (29) at the very end of the restore when trying to restore in recovery mode, and immediately gives me unknown error (1600) when trying to restore in DFU mode. I tried on both in OS X 10.6.4 and Windows 7.

I'm able to get back to where I was by restoring the original, genuine 3.1.2 firmware (using Saurik's server for my shsh blob), then applying a custom 3.1.2 firmware made with PwnageTool 3.1.5. However, I can't seem to get tethering to show up in settings again (it was before), despite following the 3.1.2 directions here and patching CommCenter.

Any suggestions for upgrading OR getting tethering back?

I am not familiar with pwnagetool that well so I will not give advice(knowing it will probably be wrong)
My question is why you want tethering to show up? There is a alternative called MyWi you can sue that is 10$ and works with unlimited.

PwnageTool upgrades require 1) that your phone already be pwned, i.e., jailbroken with a method other than Spirit, and 2) that your phone be in recovery (not normal or DFU) mode. Please make sure that both of these conditions are met and then try your custom restore again. If you still get error 29, let us know so we can help you troubleshoot. Unfortunately, error 29 is usually a hardware problem.

just tried again....

-restored to stock apple 3.1.2 from DFU mode (saurik server)
-used redsn0w 0.9.4 to jb
-entered recovery mode (screen w/ usb cord & itunes icon)
-alt+clicked restore and selected the custom firmware from pwnagetool 4.0.1
-at end of restore got unknown error 29

Yes, I'm able to restore to stock 3.1.2 in DFU no problem, first try. I see that 29 is usually hardware related, but since I have no trouble with 3.1.2 stock, I'm not sure it really is hardware...

I'll look into those troubleshooting tips
 
3GS with 3.1.2 new BR, never jailbroken

hey guys,
I know it was possible to use pwnage tool to create a custom jailbroken 4.0 and restore to it, but i'm not sure if this is possible since a restore through iTunes would have to be for 4.0.1 right now?

Also, loved using the flow chart that was in the OP, but seems like link for it is broken.

So, I was able to get it working with iRecovery. The page here suggested that replacing hardware compontents such as the battery (which I did) could cause error 29. I followed the directions here, which consisted of starting an iRecovery shell (iRecovery -s) and entering these commands:

setenv auto-boot true
saveenv
/exit

then rebooting the phone (home+power). it's on 4.0 now, although now it crashes/hard resets every so often when I press the home button to exit an application.


edit: actually it will crash/reset even if i'm not touching it

wrong, why cant this be updated ?

Redsn0w 0.9.5B5-5 is the latest version of redsn0w that works for the 3g, if you use previous versions like the one mentioned here 0.9.5-3 then you will lose your MMS settings and Internet access.... why cause the old version of redsn0w made it impossible for the phone to update with new carrier settings thats why...


for a faq this is pretty misleading, when i jailbroke my 3g with the previous redsn0w i had nothing but problems

make sure you poiint them to the right redsn0w not the old one

New Safari/PDF JB

So with the new web based JB, where does that all fit in? I would like to upgrade my 3GS to 4.01 but following the flow chart tells me i cannot at this time. Anyone used the new JB?

New JB worked great for my 3GS running 4.0.1.
