The timing is off slightly on the count in the program, it takes a few tries if you're not used to it. As soon as you see the screen flicker to life, basically move on to step 2 with holding down the home button.
i recently uploaded a custom ipsw onto my 3gs. So now I have a jailbroken IOS4 3GS. I get a popup show up on my phone asking me to update my carrier settings. For now I have been postponing the update.
If i did update will it affect my ability to use the same custom ipsw if I ever needed to do a restore?

You can actually JB 3GS with iOS 3.13 with old bootrom that's already JB with spirit without SHSH 3.12 blobs. I did it this afternoon without a problem

JB+Unlocked using Dev Teams pwnage tool + ubersn0w.
Can't find how to enable multitasking, tethering, or wallpapers.
Read every post here and couldn't seem to find it.
Is the only way to achieve that functionality to use Redsn0w.

Unlocking 3GS iOS4 problems
Hello, I have a 3GS running iOS4. I'm trying to unlock it using Redsnow 9.5 5b5-4, but I keep getting the following error: unable to recognize specified ISPW. The file that I am selecting (which is the only file there) for the IPSW is called "iPhone2,1_4.0_8A293_Restore." What am I doing wrong? Is there any way to get past this? Thanks.

Redsn0w doesn't work on the 3GS. If you are on official iOS4.0 (which it sounds like you are) you are out of luck.... for now.
OMG are you serious? NOOOOOOO. Sorry, I'm a noob, so pardon my ignorance. Do you know if 3GS users running 4.0 will get to unlock anytime soon?
It's unknown at this time but I'm sure there will be a way to do it eventually.... all thanks to the dev teams hard work and hacking skillz

Yes, my iPhone is still on 3.0.1 and my Baseband is 04.26.08. Im sure there are plenty of iPhone's in my situation. Is there a way to Jailbreak now that the only Firmware available is 4.0? Really dont want to do this as it would update my baseband. Ive tried using Blackra1n and PwanageTool with nothing to show. It seems like this should be possible but im missing something. Can anyone elaborate and make this solution available to all?

Even if you update to iOS 4 following the methods on this thread, if you reach iOS 4 jailbroken, the unlock will work, because ultrasn0w works (for now) with all the iPhone 3GS basebands. For now, don't worry about updating your baseband, it won't give you problems. Hope this helps.
OK firstly HUGE aplogies if this info is elsewhere .. but .. Heres my situation .. I followed your advice and got my 3gs Old boot rom up and running 4.0 with jailbreak and luife was fantastic , then my "mate" borrowed my iphone and she didnt really know what she was doing but ending up doing an official Apple restore .. Now Im running into the ol 1600 and error when I try to re-jail break ... I even Managed to downgrade to Please tell me is there any way to rejail break it ? and is there hope for the future ? And what happened ? did it up dated the baseband and is that why jailbreak no longer works ? Im confused.. but TURLY appreciate ANY help cause to me an iphone just anit an iphone without the jailbreak lol

When your phone was restored to 4.0 official it restored iBoot, so your phone is no longer pwned. That's why you're unable to restore to your custom 4.0 firmware. Since it sounds like you have your SHSH on file and were able to downgrade to 3.1.2, you're golden. Just jailbreak your phone at 3.1.2 first using redsn0w, then upgrade to your custom 4.0 firmware.
And presumably you've learned your lesson about letting other people touch your iPhone?
Why must you jailbreak with redsn0w(0.9.3 or lower), which takes up to 15 minutes rather than Blackra1n, which takes a minute? I haven't found this information yet, but I've spent 8 hours to get the downgrade to work and don't mind spending 15 minutes rather than 1 minute. I'm just wondering what's wrong with Blackra1n. I just finished the jailbreak and all I see is Cydia running on my 3.1.2 firmware old bootrom 3GS. Why couldn't I do this with Blackra1n? I will probably screw up the PwnageTool, so any time saved would be great when I have to downgrade again. I see that PwnageTool only works on Mac, so I'll probably screw up using sn0wbreeze 1.6.1 now.
If I have two identical iPhones going through this process, do I have to create the same custom hactivated 4.0 ispw twice to go from jailbroken 3.1.2 to jailbroken 4.0 on 3GS old bootrom? Can I use the same ispw for all 3GS old bootroom? I hope this craigslist F-er who I sell this phone to uses the multitasking to download an S-load of porn with multitasking and one day finds a woman who produces a child who will make all this easier.
I just realized I had iTunes 9.1.1 installed to downgrade. I assume I have to upgrade to 9.2 and then downgrade if I ever have to downgrade the firmware again.

I see that you need your 3.1.3 shsh blobs saved, so the new sn0wbreeze won't help me and only a few other people who managed to jailbreak 3.1.3 with spirit before ios4 came out.
I just realized that I had my 3.1.3 blobs saved since I had my 3.1.2 blobs saved on this current iPhone. I think anyone still on 3.1.2 is in the minority and you should update the flow chart to avoid 8-hour mishaps. All I learned in those 8 hours is that the Firmware Umbrella never works on either of my computers anymore to run as a TSS server because forwarding port 80 TCP on the firewall and ending the Apache server process doesn't fix the issue.

I don't usually recommend blackra1n, since I've heard of many issues from people who jailbreak with it. On the other hand, since you are going to restore to 4.0 custom anyway and all you really want is to pwn iBoot, either should work.

Why would you need to downgrade just to downgrade your firmware? I've downgraded my 3GS with 9.2 installed. Just pwn it and immediately upgraded again.
I will not update the flow chart to include any version of sn0wbreeze. I actively recommend against sn0wbreeze, which is very buggy software written by a code thief and copyleft violator. Violating a copyleft is very bad form.
I thought the guy who does sn0wbreeze is just the regular Windows porter of the devteam's pwnagetool. Sorry, I wasn't aware of that.

I couldn't get my own custom firmware working, but I downloaded pwnagetool custom 4.0 and got everything setup working now without the iTunes restore error (2) unknown. I thought maybe I would have to rejailbreak it with redsn0w or blackra1n to get it out of the recovery screen, but that firmware saved me.
I have another question. Do you know anything about the spirit2 source? Can I use the same pwnagetool custom firmware that I used to upgrade to 4.0 from 3.1.2 redsn0w jailbroken? I don't want to mess around with sn0wbreeze if I don't have to. I also don't have my shsh blob saved for the 3.1.3 3GS iPhone in case I screw up. I could use my second 3.1.2 iPhone to upgrade to 3.1.3 to test the spirit2 4.0 jailbreak because I have the saved 3.1.2 shsh. The gambling side of me says to take the 3.1.3 iPhone and run the 4.0 custom firmware restore right away. I don't think I can spare another half hour at this point.

I noticed that the volume control remote on the earphones doesn't work after upgrading to 4.0. I can't doublecheck on another iPhone to see if it's a hardware issue though. I cleaned out the port with air, but that didn't do anything. The earpieces work fine but not the remote.
Well, guess what fixed it? Unplugging it and plugging it back in.
So I couldn't get the iPhone with the saved 3.1.2 shsh to update to activated 3.1.3. I kept getting the typical error 1604 where it just hangs on the "Preparing iPhone for Restore" screen. I had to go ahead and upgrade it to 4.0 jailbroken using the pwnagetool custom firmware. I'm about to upgrade my 3.1.3 spirit iPhone without the shsh to 4.0 using the same 4.0 custom firmware. Is that advisable? There's going to be a universal jailbreak in a couple weeks anyway, right? I just don't want to do it if there's a 100% chance of failure.

Unless I hear from someone I trust that it's safe, I won't be recommending it. flashing your NOR manually can be very dangerous.
ETA: Also, please do not triple-post. Or double-post, for that matter. It's against the forum rules.
The posts were 6 hours apart. Anyway, if you find out any more details about the old bootrom 3.1.3 jailbreak method, let me know. If the 4.0 jailbreak does come out in a couple weeks, this method could go extinct.
I click on the torrent in the dev-team blog and i get an error in my torrent client. Is there something wrong with the link or is it my client?
