Well...

I was very skeptical it would work....

...but it did. Perfectly.

The iClarified instructions to jailbreak
my 3GS under iOS4 worked flawlessly.

Now let's hope iPhone 4 can be just as
easily jailbroken.

Any reason you didn't include using pwnage tool w/ 3g.

w/o enabling multitasking and wallpapers, this thing is really fast

read this thread for why I didnt use WP or MT - https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/945465/

I think Redsn0w is much simpler, and for now there is no need to preserve baseband. I could add it in, I suppose. But Redsn0w does support disabling WP and MT, so I don't really see the point of restoring when you could just use Redsn0w.

Question for you.....

I've got a 3gs which was running 3.1.2 which was jailbroken using blackra1n quite some time ago I had SSSH on file on Cydia but somehow managed to upgrade to itunes 9.2 and upgrade my iphone to 4.0. Can I still jailbreak it and which method should I use ?

Sorry for not reading the entire thread to check first.

Can't follow the flow chart? What's confusing about it? I'm always trying to improve.

Anyway: You can downgrade to 3.1.2 using Saurik's method to bypass the Apple signature server, jailbreak with redsn0w, and then finally upgrade to a custom 4.0 firmware made with PwnageTool.

This worked for 3GS, 3.1.3, and NEW bootrom!

First off, thanks thelatinist, you are the MAN!

Just made my first phone call using Tmobile with my iPhone 3GS, 3.1.3, new bootrom. I am using a MacBook with iTunes 9.2.

But first, one minor clarification to the flow chart. I read that Spirit does not work with iTunes 9.2. So I went into my VMWare/ Windows XP, downloaded iTunes 9.1.1 and install it under Windows:

http://www.oldapps.com/itunes.php?old_itunes=57

You can also downgrade your iTunes 9.2 to 9.1 by going here:

http://www.oxyjan.com/oxyjan/forum/?vasthtmlaction=viewtopic&t=16.0

With the 3GS connected to iTunes 9.1, I was able to jailbreak with Spirit and unlock with ultraSn0w. This is the first time I've ever done this. Feels really good! Thanks.

All I need to do now is figure how to transfer all the info from my old iphone to this one. All that info with my old 3G phone is currently under iTunes 9.2. So will syncing my new 3GS under that iTunes mess up my JB?

You need to backup your old phone (the 3G) in any iTunes -- 9.2 is fine. Plug the JB 3GS into that computer and right-click on it in the "Devices" area in the right pane. Choose "restore from backup...' and your data will come over.

So I already have a backup of the old 3G. But I think that phone has the new iOS 4.

The new 3GS is currently 3.1.3 with the new bootrom, both jailbreak w/ spirit and unlock w/ ultrasn0w.

My goal is to only transfer contacts, calendars, settings, notes, media, applications, etc... without affecting the os version and mess up my jb and unlock.

Ok this might be a dumb question. I have a 3G that has 3.1.3 firmware. Do I upgrade to iOS4 through Itunes, then proceed with the jailbreak procedure? Thanks.

i downloaded red snow and i also downloaded the ispw of my 4.0 for 3g. i dont get how to browse and add my firmware for my 3g. thanks :d

That flow chart is awesome!

The flow chart is awesome, except no matter how many times I go through it, the damn thing keeps leading me and my 4.0 3GS back to 'Sorry You Cannot Upgrade to 4.0 and Jailbreak at this time' :D

thanks so much for this!

After i activated my iphone 4 i went straight to work to Jb and unlock my 3g. I've got the jb, but i cant unlock. Cydia says it cannot find the repository i need for ultrasnow. any ideas? It gets to the verifying URL screen and then pretty much appears to time out.

Thanks!

ok so i jailbreaked my iphone 3gs with no problems. But when I try to restore my iphone from backup it restores the whole phone but I lose all of cydia and other apps

Can you please help???

I have an old bootrom and i had 3.1.2 before i used Pwnage 4.0.1

I so knew this was going to be a busy thread.

Well it looks like geohot will not be doing anything soon and the dev team cant sort out the problems for 3gs new bootrom people just yet.
So I guess it is time to jailbreak my iphone with spirit and unlock with ultrasn0w thanks to thelatinist excellent flow chart.
However before I do, does anyone think that I should wait till these issues are sorted as I really want the ios4 to be able to run multiple apps in the background.
Also if I do jailbreak and unlock now do you think that by doing so will affect any future possibility of me getting ios4.
my one concern right now is that I put itunes 9.2 on my pc then removed it (completely I hope) and reinstalled 9.11. and just hope this would not affect the chance of unlocking.

Cheers everyone.

Dam I wish I could hypnotise my iphone into thinking it was a ios4...

Muchos gracias to thelatinist. Your help is invaluable.
For all those who are pressed for time, read the first post. It's obvious a lot of effort was made to help people such as myself, who are confused by the rapid developments going on in JB/unlocking. I'm still not sure what GM means in reference to JB, but I'll eventually figure it out.

Thanks again.

downgrading 3gs

ive been at this on my own for the last 6 hours with no luck, so now im seeking guidance.

i had a jailbroken 3gs running 3.1.2 and upgraded to 4.0 to play with it.
now im trying to get back to either 3.1.2 or 3.1.3 to re-jailbreak. can this be done? im going crazy!

have you save your shsh file for 3.1.3 or 3.1.2? if yes you can downgrade it. if not, cannot downgrade. the following link shows you hown to downgrade if you have the required shsh files : click here

does the iPhone 4 have the same bootrom as the later 3GS? if so then the same exploits may work for both.

I have updated the first post of this thread with a flow chart which explains as clearly as I can what phones can be upgraded to a jailbroken 4.0. It should cover all scenarios.

upgrade_flow.png

Thanks for posting that. I read some simplistic blog entry that stated iPhone 4.0 3GS could be jailbroken, so I just upgraded with what I thought was a custom firmware but was actually the original used to create the custom firmware. I guess I'm SOL for a few months. I should have stayed at the 3.13 unlocked version. I'll use the chart for my other phones.

i have saved them, i cant figure out how to "navigate to /etc" though

Interesting blurb from QWKPWN today about iPhone4:

1. iOS4 has code which sends updates to the user every 1-2 weeks and locks their system if they are not using AT&T as their carrier. AT&T and Apple both have 6 months of OTA’s in their server, according to the “Alpha” Apple employee.

2. Apple can check users’ baseband and carrier information and also see whether or not they are jailbroken when they call Apple Care Support. Apple staff has been instructed to void users’ warranty once they find out if they jailbreak iOS4. The full message that the Apple employee gave about the OTA is below:

“How it works is every 7 to 14 days We (Apple) and AT&T send a message to your iPhone that gathers some data from your iPhone without you knowing and we see what is running, baseband and firmware. We then send a following message. “There are optional updates for your iPhone, Would you like to install them now?” two options “Yes” or “Later”. Those are what would would call “OPTIONAL UPDATES” Now there are things called “MANDATORY UPDATES”. They tend to work the same way, grab data from the iPhones sends it to AT&T and us then back to your iPhone with the message, “Your iPhone (name of iphone) must be updated to the current AT&T standards to run”, your only option is to “Accept” Now you can try to work your way around it until you get the second mandatory message again “You must plug iPhone into iTunes and update” If you don’t do this you will then receive no Signal from the network anymore and your iPhone will potentially lock up with no signs of use until you update your iPhone via iTunes. You all agreed to this terms and condition when you installed iTunes 9.2 and then again once you updated to iOS4. With that being Said go ahead Try to unlock the iPhone it will only last 14 days max…”

3. On iPhone 4, when you use FaceTime Apple can check what two phones are communicating with each other and also see what location these phones are communicating from too. Here is what the Apple Employee said about FaceTime:

"I will let you off with one last bit of information if your gonna write a story on this and that is Facetime, the iPhone 4 to iPhone 4 Wifi video connecting. The issue is with Wifi is that anyone can get on a Wifi Signal and potentially see what the viewers and broadcasters are looking at without them know, now Apple will deny this and say its not our problem you where not on a secure connection, in my mind I think that its all ********.

People should be able to have some type of security during those calls. Worst yet is once a person connects to another person on FaceTime it for some reason non of us in the office can figure out, sends us APPLE a message and says those two people are connecting via Facetime and gives out their location to us. So for whatever reason we need that information just blows my mind. As a consumer why would you need to let Apple know that you are connecting with a person via FaceTime, its non of Apple’s business."

Interesting blurb from QWKPWN today about iPhone4:

MuscleNerd

How would AT&T send *any* OTA command to an iPhone4 on T-Mobile :) Rest of the silly "leak" goes downhill from there

That comes from twitter about 15 hours ago and hold on I'm in the UK or does at&t have access to networks worldwide?
