Sorry if I'm daft and this has been answered already but I upgraded my 3gs to 4.0. It does have the old bootrom BUT i did not back up the SHSH FILE. I do have in my possession ;) a jailbroken ipsw for the 3GS 4.0. Am I safe to restore it to that?

thanks so much for this!

After i activated my iphone 4 i went straight to work to Jb and unlock my 3g. I've got the jb, but i cant unlock. Cydia says it cannot find the repository i need for ultrasnow. any ideas? It gets to the verifying URL screen and then pretty much appears to time out.

Thanks!

The repository "should" have downloaded when you executed the Cydia app. Mine did.

Follow the directions HERE and HERE

Good luck.

Once upgraded to 4.0 it is too late to use a custom firmware unless you have saved your SHSH. Sorry, you'll have to wait for new tools.

I keep on getting an error message telling me the ispw file is not recognized it keeps on doing this everytime I select the file in Redsn0w. If someone can help it would be much appreciated. The file I am selecting is the official software update which is iphone1,2_4.0_80923_restore.ispw
Thanks in advance.
I am on Windows Vista.
And its a Iphone 3G.

Anybody have an answer to this?

It happened to me and I'm on Windoze XP. I ended up using Redsn0w 0.9.5b 5-2 and the iphone1,2_4.0_80923_restore.ispw without a hitch. Worked perfect and recognized the ISPW. WTF??

beta 5-2 recognizes the GM IPSW, beta 5-3 or higher recognize the official release from Apple. They may have been mixed up if someone had both floating around on their computer, or the download could have been corrupted.

You did not have the release version of the firmware, you had the GM candidate. It can be confusing because the files are named the same but contain different firmware.

Yes, if someone is getting that error, they either are using the wrong version of Redsn0w or the wrong version of the .ipsw. I always recommend downloading from the official link on the Dev-Team Blog and getting your firmware from The iPhone Wiki (this replaced Poorlad's iCommunity site) which has direct links to Apple's servers.

Thanks for the reply Neolithium.

I downloaded the actual GM thru Itunes. I didn't know how to direct Redsn0w0.9.5b 5-3 or 5-4 to the file wherever it ended up in my computer files BUT I did have the iphone1,2_4.0_80923_restore.ispw, which was supposed to be the exact file as the GM according to the web, already downloaded from a mirror from a couple days ago.

Hmmmm........anything to be concerned about since I used the 5-2 version?

Thanks for the reply thelatinist!;)

Since I'm bored and loved the challenge of jailbreaking and unlocking my phone, should I re-do it all with the GM and Redsn0w 0.9.5b 5-4 versions?:D

Thanks so much! I got it working with one last try.. my wireless conenction must've been a little wonky. However, I have no idea if it was a successful jailbreak. The number that phone was on was transfered to my new iphone 4. So right now it doesn't show any carrier logo. Is there anyway to tell if the jailbreak worked?

B-4 won't recognize the GM version ;) It needs to use the official release from Apple.

Bored so I just re-jailbroke it using the Redsn0w 5b 5-4 version since I was able to locate the OE restore IPSW in my Itunes folder on my computer. Smooth as glass in my attempt. ;)

I'm guessing since I "re-jailbroke" it, my unlock is still viable, correct?

The repo666.ultrasn0w.com is still showing a check mark in the Cydia program like it was installed, which it was of course.

Hmmmm.........after playing around with the re-jailbroken Redsn0w 5b 5-4 version in conjunction with the OE Restore IPSW, I notice alot more "fluid" movement in the sliding action and overall operation of my phone. Interesting. Guess there is/was an improvement in doing this with the latest flash.

many many thanks to thelatinist.. he helped me through pm's multiple times to get my 3gs jailbroken and unlocked on 4.0. i finally was able to test it this morning and its now unlocked! :) thanks again man!!

Very few people plan to restore their phones. Sometimes it just becomes necessary, especially when one is jailbroken.

It's ALWAYS necessary when one is jailbroken. No jailbreak remains stable and usable for more than a few months.

I'll apologize ahead of time if a similar situation has been brought up but I only read the first page of the 11 in this thread. A couple of days ago, I upgraded to iOS4 on my previously jailbroken 3G. After about a day without the JB (really miss A Better Tap to Unlock & SBSettings), I decided to start looking around for a JB. I went to iClarified.com & tried to follow their tutorial for JBing using RedSn0w. Unfortunately, I only made it toward the end of the second step.

For some reason, I kept getting an error message (1015) around the last 10% of the initial restore process. After it happened the first time, I canceled and restarted the restore process. Once it happened a second time, I decided to move onto step three and launch RedSn0w, hoping that I could move on through the process once I selected the firmware listed on their site (which was extracted on a folder on my desktop).

However, I then got an error message that RedSn0w didn't recognize the ispw I was trying to use; although I downloaded the exact one iClarified's site listed to use. Am I s.o.l. here or am I completely missing something? At this point, I may just end up waiting for Geohot to release a JB even though I would rather not. Thanks for the help.

Here's the tutorial I used for reference:

If it isn't recognizing the IPSW it may simply be the wrong version. I would suggest you try this:

Use the latest version of redsn0w.
Mac
Windows

And the official iOS4 IPSW
iOS4 for iPhone 3G

Are you manually putting it into DFU mode? Redsn0w doesn't do it automatically for you. http://www.iclarified.com/entry/index.php?enid=1034
