i have a JB 3gs on 3.0.1 with the old 04.28.xx baseband

to unlock it now can I just download ultrasn0w from the cydia repo and install it?

also newbie question: i'm on ATT so i don't NEED the unlock.. if i unlock it, will i still be able to use my ATT phone as I always do, or does the unlock make it so you HAVE to use a different sim card?

thanks everyone

Yes, you can unlock your phone now by installing ultrasn0w. It should not affect your AT&T service at all.

Just one more question: How do I wipe all of my personal information off my phone while keeping the 3.0.1 JB and 04.28.xx ultrasnow unlock?

iphone 3g

Hey guys,

I read the thread and it looks like the unlock tool for iphone 3g is not out yet, but the dev team will hopefully have it out later tonight. For background, I have a 16gb iphone 3g, version 3.1.3, modem firmware 5.12.01. I have never JBed the phone before.

I would like to install iOS4, jailbreak and get everything going, and be able to quickly sell the phone as soon as I get my new iphone4 in the mail on Thursday. So if I do that and maybe just add contact info (not email and such) for a few days, is there a way I can safely remove contacts/recent calls list without having to restore to factory defaults and JB/unlock again?

Thanks in advance!

Everything is the same.
The GM build is the same as what was released today.
I haven't found any differences between them.
Build number and firmware version are identical.

The one difference so far is that GameCenter didn't make it in to the released version.

thelatinist as usual you delivered the good, blinding post.

It is extremely useful having well written information located in one place

Yep... that appears to be the only difference so far.
I'm playing with two 3 GS iPhones (one with GM 4.0 and one with official 4.0 release)
So far everything else is identical.

Thanks for all the info and keeping it updated. I read before I posted and hopefully I'm not as big of a idiot as I though...

Jailbroken 3GS with Spirit on 3.1.3 and 5.12.01 baseband. I just downloaded the updated ultrasnow.

Is that it? It's unlocked? I remember in my 3G days the option was visible in the blackra1n "app".

Am I missing something here?

first of all, thanks for this very informative post.

I have to ask though, where is the risk of upgrading a 3GS 3.1.2 (jailbroken with blackrain) with earliest bootloader to the iOS4, even using the ordinary iTunes upgrade process? I have saved SHSHs (iBEC, iBSS, ECID) ages ago. My understanding is that no matter then baseband I can always go back to 3.x.x anyway.

So why should I not go and just update to iOS4 via iTunes, if I understand them correctly, jailbreak and unlock are DEFINITELY happening anyway, they're just prepping the tools to do so conveniently?

Why then do I read warnings NOT TO go and upgrade, don't get it, opinions are VERY contradicting. What am I missing here?

Remember, we risk our devices so you don’t have to (but this time anyone who has made a mistake upgrading their baseband firmware at 3.1.3 or 4.0 should be OK real soon ;) Now! :)

Hey guys, im pretty sure i currently cant jailbreak and unlock with my current phone but i just wanted to double check with people that know this stuff better than me.

I prematurely upgraded to the official OS 4 on my 3Gs today, its currently running the 5.13.04 firmware. So do i have to wait or can i jailbreak it and unlock it now? Also it has never been unlocked before. This would be the first time on this phone.

Thanks.

they dont have the tools, dont upgrade yet, just wait a few more days possibly until they are sure and have released the tools

you can jailbreak and unlock now but im not sure if redsnow works on the 3gs, the bigger news would be that unlock is possible on all basebands now.

asides from the redsnow .0.9.5 beta is there any other jailbreaking tool out there?

to unlock you need to jailbreak first, the tools though asides from redsnow i would like to know

I have installed ultrasn0w 0.93, but when i open cydia the damn thing stays in the "changes" category, offering me an update to 0.93 which i already have! What to do? I just hate that notification badge...

It appears that is a bug with the new Ultrasn0w. Just have to deal with it I guess.

I have a 3GS jailbroken with spirit and currently have itunes 9.2 installed. I am trying to update to the new iOS4.

I know I can't directly update to iOS4 with the jailbreak so I am trying to restore to a previous backup, however when I connect to itunes, and choose "Restore" a window pops up that says "Restore and Update".

I would prefer to ONLY restore to the pre-jailbreak backup I made a few months ago just to be safe but it isn't giving me the option to manually choose my backup, onle the "Restore and Update" option.

Has anyone with a jailbroken 3.1.3 phone with itunes 9.2 done the "restore and update" option with success?

I just want the new iOS and don't care about the jailbreak as I don't have any JB apps I need.

I have successfully updated it but only to find another problem, you have to use irecovery to exit the recovery mode loop, then disaster happen. The phone will automatically shut down and reboot after some time. Looks like it is still in the recovery mode loop somehow. :(

As long as you have your 3.1.2 SHSH on file or saved through Umbrella, you can do what you describe. But be aware that, while you will be able to go back to 3.1.2, you will not be able to get cell service on that version because of an incompatibility with the 05.13.04 baseband. You should soon be able to downgrade, jailbreak, and upgrade with PwnageTool, though, so if it's really important to you to try out 4.0 immediately...

I did it with the 3G twice correctly with no results (macrumors thread) stay away for a bit. I'm not risking it a third time.

wait. i posted that idea

1) make sure you have downloaded the correct GM release for your product

2) change computers. I had to switch. The first would always fail

3) shut down any anti viruses

4) download GM with Mozilla. Other browsers split the GM then reconstruct it at the end of d/l. this can corrupt it.

unlocked 3gs - but also have iphone 4

I have the 3gs unlocked and jailbroken - done for me by a shop in Markham. Now I am using it with a foreign SIM (NTT Docomo) in Japan.

fw 3.1.2,
iTunes at 9.1.1.12

I expect my iPhone 4 within 48 hrs, but not sure what to do with iTunes to ensure that I don't screw up the 3gs. I am not sure what kind of unlock was done, but when I open Cydia it says Cydia 1.0.3172. When I open Cydia it says there is an essential upgrade - but I don't use Cydia (just need the unlock).

Sorry if this has been answered - I reread this thread, and see it quite clearly stated to wait for official confirmation from the Dev-Team before upgrading to iTunes 9.2. Assuming that I need 9.2 for the iPhone 4, I may be in a bit of a bind here. I remember worrying about this when I got my iPad - and someone told me that the iTunes version doesn't matter - just don't click to update the iPhone 3gs - so I went ahead and updated iTunes and it seemed to work fine. Crossing my fingers that the same will happen with this iTunes update!

Awesome thread; and sound advice everyone! I've gone the route of torrents and non-iPhone-Dev Team jailbreaks, and I always found myself in trouble and in "panic-mode!" I know I'm not the only one to have lost sleep over an iPhone in the "constant Silver Apple mode" at 4:30am. I strongly suggest texting 40404 and enter: follow iphone_dev in the United States and it will automatically set you up to follow them on twitter...

I guess let me be more to the point...

Other than getting a T-Mobile sim how can you tell if the Ultrasnow unlock works???

Thanks in advance

From what I remember, Ultrasn0w fixes the bug that got rid of the AT&T logo on the iPhone. So what I did was turn Ultrasn0w off via the SBSettings Toggle and then restart my phone. When it reboots, there should not be anything between the signal and the wifi signal. Then I toggle SBSettings back on, reboot the phone and look for the AT&T logo, which I believe appears if Ultrasn0w is installed and working.

hey guys!
got some newbie questions for all of you...
I read all forum over and over and still couldnt find a clear answer...

I have a 3G S running on 3.1.2 JB and unlocked via blackra1n...
Since the guys from dev-team said all basebands are unlockable, can i just upgrade to 4.0 through iTunes and then JB using sprit/blacra1n or do I have to use a cutom IPSW already jailbroken?

One last question, will 4.0 firmware change my baseband ? mine is 05.11.07
thanks you guys!
Love the forum, you rock!!

Where is the option within SBS to toggle Ultrasn0w?

I've had a little look through but haven't really seen an answer.

I jailbroke my iPhone 3gs with spirit a few weeks ago.

Before I updated to iTunes 9.2 I restored to the backup prior to jailbreaking.

I do not plan on rejailbreaking my phone.

Should it be fine for me to update or will I encounter problems? When I jailbroke my phone I was under the impression that it would be fine if I did this, but I figured it was worth checking.

Thanks

To everyone asking about the 3GS: You cannot yet upgrade to 4.0 and then jailbreak your phone. Period.

There is not yet any tool that can jailbreak an iPhone 3GS once it has been upgraded to 4.0. You must wait until new tools are released.

From my understanding while reading the Dev-Team blog, 2g and 3g CAN update to iOS4 and still jailbreak then unlock?

This will be my first jailbreak, and I'm a little confused by all the INS and outs.

Thanks in advance!!
