The iOS 4 Upgrade, Jailbreak, and Unlock FAQ [Updated 8/2 - Updated Flow Chart]

Ok. Quick question. I have downloaded the latest version of redsn0w and have got the .ipsw file for the official iOS4. I've got a factory unlocked 3G and if I were to run redsn0w and jailbreak my iPhone, will there be any difference to how it was before? There are some options to tick such as 'enable battery %, enable multitasking, enable homescreen wallpaper', etc while running redsn0w. So does that mean my 3G will have the above features without installing other apps such as SBSettings, etc. or will it still require all that?

Jailbreaking for the first time. Thank you for your advice.
 
Just before I DO IT...can somebody please confirm the steps...

[my current phone]
iPhone 3G, 3.1.3, iTunes 9.2

[What I plan to do]
upgrade 3G 3.1.3 to iOS4 via iTunes --> Jailbreak with Redsn0w 0.9.5-3 beta --> unlock with ultrasn0w 0.93.

Does this seem right?

BTW, is there anyway I can check if the phone is properly unlocked (other than putting a T-Mobile Sim card)?
 
I am new to the whole jailbreaking/unlocking scene. I have a 16gb 3g running 3.13 with the 05.12.01 baseband. I have an iphone 4 coming june 23rd. All I want to do is jailbreak, unlock, swipe all my information from the phone and sell it. I apologize if this has been asked repeatedly, but how do I do this? I have been looking all over and I can only find out how to jailbreak it or how to unlock it or how to swipe all the data from it. Nothing that correlates with all three. I would appreciate any help that can be given. It is so frustrating I am about to rip my hair out! Thank you in advance.

I'm in the same boat as you. I did the redsn0w process three times. The second time I could actually change my background.

I then installed ultrasn0w but neither of my T-Mobile sim cards work on my iPhone. 3G has been turned off for months. I used to see a message about activation now it just shows 'no service'. Uninstalled and reinstalled ultrasn0w multiple times and JB the phone a third time for good measure. Ultrasnow doesn't seem to work??

fyi this 3G iPhone had never been JB let alone carrier unlocked before.


EDIT: I had Cydia do the reinstall instead of uninstalling and installing again and now both T-Mobile sims work in the iPhone.

check d sticky in this forum calles "tethering guide"...it has everythin u can ever wanna know...if u still have questions...then u can com bak by all means...

4) download GM with Mozilla. Other browsers split the GM then reconstruct it at the end of d/l. this can corrupt it.

1) I have official dev GM (and yday release) - I was just posting for everyone else's sake.

3) mm don't have an 'anti-virus'.

when i have finished updating to 4.0, it had a pop up asking me to carrier update. will this affect my baseband at all?? i dont want this msg to always pop up when i start itunes.

Proceed with the carrier update...it will not affect the baseband.

There is not yet any tool that can jailbreak an iPhone 3GS once it has been upgraded to 4.0. You must wait until new tools are released.

You should put this up in bold letters in your initial post so people start bugging you. I'll also wait for the dev-team guys to do their magic. Can't hurt.

You could shout as loud as you want Latinist with regards to the 3GS Jailbreak but sadly many people can’t/won’t hear you, mainly because they cannot read simple English or just plain impatient/ignorant!! :rolleyes:

Nevertheless, this is an excellent post (as usual) :)

Peeps - mind what the man said...there is no solution for the 3GS for the time being!!
 
Update JB 3gs with spirit

I'm using an Iphone 3gs with spirit JB. Itunes 9.2 (yes i know, i read the message to NOT update too late).

I want to update to ios 4. I dont need to jaibreak again after the update.
Has anyone succesfully upgraded in the situation listed above?

Quick question, after installing iTunes 9.2, we need to get iOS4.0 on the iphone (I have 3G). Can we download it in itunes itself, or do we need to put it on with Shift + restore?

If you're running 3.1.3 then you just click update, if you're running GM you will need to restore.
