Purify's Twitter account is purify_app

From a tweet posted on December 4: "just pushed a great Site Insight update to solve an issue of pages loading blank. If you can’t wait for auto-update, just launch the app!"

the first page yes, then try an internal link (any article): it opens a white page on both my iPhone and my iPad air ...
I've tried a bunch of links but they seem to work fine on my iPhone 6s Plus. I am using the new beta version of the app though.

I'll try it on my iPad later when I get the chance to see if there are any issues there. I feel bad even asking since I know you probably did already but... You're on the latest version of the blocklist, right?

Doesn't blocking depend on your ISP and regional filter settings. Depending on lour locations some sites serve a different webpage (ad elements) of the same site. Could that variation be the cause here?

I've followed this thread from the beginning and have tried most of the blockers mentioned. I'm still using Magic at this point. This does seem a bit like a "shiny penny" thread where we're all jumping on the newest blocker that comes out (not a gripe...I'm doing it too). However, I'm just wondering what everyone sees as bubbling to the top of the pile. Seems like Purify and Magic are still near the top. Any other opinions?

Mozilla has just released a new blocker iOS app (Focus). Works with Safari but not Firefox.

I've tried it for a few minutes. It's no better than others. Very nice slick design. A few configuration options. Nothing to indicate how the block list is updated (I don't know if it needs/uses background app refresh, or refreshes on opening).

Compared to Crystal (my installed blocker of choice) it's faster, but left white space where Crystal did not (example: theguardian.com) and failed to block some shopping ads (example: kotaku.co.uk). Doesn't have an EU cookie blocker option either.

A nice looking app, with decent performance, but needs work to be top rank.

I would like to know this as well, we need have a poll in this thread which is updated regularly. I am using Purify and its worked well for me, and better than magic.

I'm using a combination of Crystal and Cookie Box (EU cookie warnings). Purify was good but got worse for me; I'd consider it again though. Adblock Fast was good but doesn't seem to have been updated in a while. Magic didn't do that well for me. Focus I will try again if they address some of the gaps I've spotted so far.

Perhaps, but ultimately this isn't the thing being examined here. Max reported that he could not open any links when he went to that particular URL, rather than the fact that he was still seeing ads. If it was as simple as I did not see ads whereas he did, what you said might be the explanation.

I've considered the other possibility of it loading up an entirely different page due to region differences, as I think you may have been inferring, but I'm not sure of the practicality of that. I have tried going to the same websites I regular visit when I am here in China, after going home to Canada and while using a VPN tunnelled through the US and at least from what I could tell, I was getting the same page but with "regionalized" ads. The functionality of the websites never seemed to be affected either, whether I was using a blocker or not.

Im not using the beta
I understand, I just meant were you on the latest blocklist in general. I tried again just now on my iPad Mini 4 using the non-beta version of Magic on blocklist version 17 and it worked just as well as on my iPhone, albeit with a different layout. Not sure what to tell you...

Well jumping on the newest blocker can do good. If you're (not you specifically, but in the general sense) not completely satisfied with your current blocker, I see no reason why you shouldn't try a new one that comes out to see if it performs any better. I wasn't happy with Purify, which was why I then tried a bunch of other content blockers, including a couple while they were in beta, and eventually settled on Magic because it retained functionality in the websites I visited most often. However, as I had previously stated in the reviews thread, I understand that it wouldn't work for everyone because not everyone visits the same sites I do. This is evident in the post above by @spacemnspiff as he has had the complete opposite experience in comparison to myself.

It seems a bit more difficult to gauge what the general consensus is now that the initial "craze" has subsided and many people have likely found one that they are content with and moved on. I think you'll find arguments in favour of several different blockers, all of which will and won't work for other people.

Purify is definitely the fastest one I've used thus far but also the one to break functionality in the most websites I frequented, as well as having the developer seemingly go radio silent. I was also very disappointed to see no response to my submitted issues and having none of them fixed after several updates. Aside from it I have had positive experiences with Adblock Fast, Refine and Umbra, but I've been using Magic personally for the last month or so as it has worked the best for me. I've been meaning to go back and re-try Umbra since its update, but haven't yet found the time to do so.

i am loving FOCUS.

until now, i think it is even better than ADBLOCK FAST and PURIFY. (Magic is a little below these)

FOCUS is veryyyyy fast, and blocks even more trackers than the other two.

Whitelisting would be good.

Looks like Mozilla also joins the Adblock train with "Focus"
https://itunes.apple.com/app/id1055677337

Seems more of a tracker blocker than ad blocking. Tested it out on some site... not good at ad blocking.
Ad blocking is not its primary purpose. Ads are basically just "collateral damage" since many are also trackers.

When it comes to blocking trackers and protecting my privacy, I'd trust this app more than most others, since it's from Mozilla and uses the well-establish Disconnect.me block list (which is also used by the new content blocker function in Firefox 42).

Yes, seems to be a good one. By the description it sounded as if it would only block trackers, but it does a very good job at blocking ads. It even blocks that NASTY "download our app" banner at the top of EACH SITE of dailymail.co.uk.

If you were to choose the best content-blocker that can function reliably over a long period of time, your best bet is to choose those from companies that has enough financial and human resources to maintain and update the filter list frequently. In that case, Adguard, Mozilla, Eyeo, Mobotap (or perhaps Ghostery in the future) will have an advantage in this domain. It's almost impossible for lone developer to devote everyday of his life to answer to all user reports and update his filter list accordingly.

The second determining factor is their user support quality. Developers that respond to users' request promptly and make amendment to the filter list in a timely fashion (i.e. update within hours to a day) are more desirable than developers who ignore reports and spend days to weeks to update their filter list.

Lastly, you might want to check if you agree with the business model of the developer. Eyeo, for example, may have questionable business practice.

Anything else is secondary. If a developer is committed in their work and is able to respond responsibly to user reports in long run, the app will definitely catch up on speed and ad-blocking efficiency in no time.

So is this something we use in conjunction with an ad blocker? Or is it good enough to use as a stand alone?

Thanks.

Just tried Focus. It's fast, and it's blocking all ads from a few sites that I frequent recently (gaming sites with lots of ads). Good job By Mozilla!
