I have bad news, and good news!

The Bad News:

AdBomb 1.0 is still awaiting for review... Since September 11th!

Looks like a couple of hours of delay got AdBomb in the end of the list, and AppStore has flooded with "Minor changes to support iOS 9.0" Apps... as usual... I think they really should hire more people!

The good news:

I got approval for AdBomb 2.0 Beta!

Please note, version 2.0 is still a beta, and some things are not working, it's not a release candidate, so just toy around with it a bit.

If you want to joint the BETA bandwagon, please send an email, with your data:

FirstName, SecondName, em@il

In a line, with this format, with the commas. Please send to this e-mail: 87nelson@gmail.com

Notice you need Apple's TestFlight App installed in your device, just search for "TestFlight" on the AppStore.

Thank you.

Crystal is junk for me

blocks 0 ads for me (Ipad mini) and blocks out videos to site I want to watch.

If you using the original iPad mini 1 crystal won't work. I believe it has something to do about the iPad mini being 32 bit. If you go to any blocker apps they don't list the iPad mini, they list the iPad mini 2 and beyond.

I bought Ad Block Multi https://appsto.re/gr/ven29.i
In conjunction with Purify (best to date), Peace (to open Twitter feed links in Safari Web View) now with its toggles I can also block malicious domains, EU cookie law notices (I live in Greece), anti-dblock killers thanks to this app (I keep ad blocking and tracking toggles off so that Purify can handle that task).

First site I tried this on, it allowed a few ads to get through.

I prefer the free Adblock Plus browser. It blocks all ads and especially the ones Ad Block Multi let through.

I've purchased Peace (refund after the Marco debacle), Crystal, Blockr and Purify. I've also installed some of the free content blocking apps mentioned in the thread.

Purify, thus far, is the best of the lot. It just handles web pages better, loads faster and picks off those sponsored ads. To me, it's just more polished.

It's more expensive than the rest, but worth it in my opinion. Whatever this developer is doing with his app, it's done better than the rest.

Though I'm glad I purchased Crystal and Blockr, because I think they'll improve over time.

I requested a refund for Peace using the report a problem link. The refund was automatically applied as it was within 14 days of purchase.

I got Crystal for free so I can't compare to others. Adblock Plus is going to release an app soon (it's in review process by Apple) and it's going to be free. They have a list even better than Ghostery so I guess it's going to be the best around.

AdMop seems to be working well. Maybe BasicGreatGuy can review that one as well. :)

The maker of "Peace" (who has decided to remove from the store) used Ghostery's list. He made a point which at least seems to make sense. That is, in the effort to search for every possibility - which can be 7000 or more things - you can slow things down more than you speed things up. He liked Ghostery's list because it hit the main problems without overdoing it. I think their list is around 2000.

Is there any ad blocker that blocks those sponsored "suggested posts" on Facebook as well? Pretty much the only thing I'm seeing on Facebook mobile now with Crystal.

I had posted this on another thread. My impressions, FWIW:

I downloaded Purify ($3.99), 1Blocker (free and the $2.99 pro version) and Blockr ($.99). Of the three, I much prefer Purify. Pages loaded the fastest with Purify over the others. Purify also has a whitelist feature. The second best is 1Blocker, but, on average, pages load somewhat slower than Purify. Also, some pages were broken and you cannot whitelist them under 1Blocker. Coming in third is Blockr, which loads the pages the slowest of the three and let a couple of ads slip by.

All do the job and I'd take any one of them over having no content blocker. The ads were becoming so ridiculous that it took away some enjoyment from using Safari on my iPhone6 and iPad Air. It comes down to a matter of preference and Purify is my favorite. Now web browsing is fast and there are no more annoying ads! Just make sure to whitelist such sites as YouTube if, for example, you want to watch YouTube videos on Safari. It's simple and straightforward to do.

[Edit 2015-09-20: You’ll find a revised version of this post on my blog.]

I made a quick test to roughly compare the ad-blocking capabilities of the content blockers I have downloaded until now…

add_blocking.png

The winners so far are:
  • Blockr
  • Purify
  • Silentium

Some notes on these three:
  • Purify and Silentium had some rendering problems on elements on the first test site; Blockr was fine. (But this may be different on other sites …)
  • Blockr and Silentium allow it to activate ad blocking and privacy (tracker blocking) independently from each other. Purify is all or nothing.
  • Blockr and Silentium have very detailed and useful settings extensions, while with Purify you have just a whitelisting switch. See screenshots:

extensions-350px-r.png

And finally each of the three has a different set of additional blockers:

additional_blockers.png

At the end it’s a hard decision and it depends on which features are most important for you. For the moment I go with Blockr, because I like to have cookie and image blocking on certain sites, and all in all it’s a very well-rounded content blocker.

But I could also imagine to go for example with Purify (or Silentium) and Blockr, enabling just the complementary features. (But somehow I prefer the idea of having only one content blocker…)

In every-day use bugs will appear, inconveniences and conveniences will become clearer, the apps will be developed further and the whole picture most certainly will change.
