Nice!!! Wonder if that explains some of those landmarks that are more detailed than others (like Alcatraz Island, for example).

Looking forward to seeing what comes from this!
They also mention road features, so I'm guessing bridges and other stuff will now have detailed 3D views. It seems as though landmarks are on obvious one they have done, but I've noticed shopping centers and airports seem to be coming up more since they are large gathering places with multiple POI's. 3D detailed buildings REALLY help in those cases.

For sure! Not sure if they were responsible for the model, but as an example of an airport, take a look at SFO. It doesn't have the indoor maps (which is STILL odd to me) but the 3D model of the building is more detailed than other airports.

In my experience, ever since the new Maps came around, Apple has definitely been ahead of Google for me. I'll consider it the "complete" experience once Look Around expands to my area (I'm just outside of Chicago's coverage). Also waiting on cycling. But those two things aside, once you add to it this level of 3D detail and it will just push it even further ahead, in my opinion!

Agreed...we are fortunate to live in the USA, so I get where a lot of folks really prefer Google. I would too if I had no other option.

But to me, Apple's UI, graphics, routing, LookAround, etc. are all ahead of Google's offerings. They have a long way to go to catch up from an "information" standpoint, but they are catching up fast. Again, more so in the USA than anywhere else, but they are obviously in this now for the long haul and it gets better every day.

One aspect (or two) I will push back on; functionality vs pretty and the ability to plan or route a trip. When Apple gets to that point it will likely become more than a test object for me.

Oh, when I get all the current pieces too ;)

Well...I was trying to be fair to users outside of the USA.

Functionally AND visually, Maps works nearly perfect for me (or at least as good as Google from a functional standpoint). I can't remember the last time it didn't give me the correct location or info for a POI I was looking for...and routing is always spot on. Maybe I'm just lucky??

Here ya go! Justin O'Bierne posted a writeup about it! Take a look at the footnotes and you'll see his question about indoor maps for malls and airports. He also mentions an easy way to see which buildings are more detailed. They're darker and display at an earlier zoom level.

Yeah...Justin gets all of his info from me... /s

LOL. Apple must have had an NDA in their contract with Virtuos. Their posts “have been quietly removed”.

You don’t mess with the Fruit Company!

I’m wondering if Apple is working on bringing the feature in iOS 14.5 (beta) where you can report incidents, hazards and speed checks to more countries, which currently only appears to be working in the United States. Today I’m able to tap on accidents and hazards on the map here in Sweden and see the option to mark them as cleared or still there. I wasn’t able to do this a few days ago. I tried starting turn-by-turn navigation but Siri didn’t mention the new reporting feature. I also tried swiping up on the navigation card to see if the report button was there but it wasn’t (it was replaced by the overview button). I also tried using Siri but it told me that the feature isn’t available in Sweden. Are others outside the US also starting to see these options now when they tap on accident or hazard icons on the map?

I doubt it…others would already be seeing it in the beta in those countries I would guess.

It’s not appearing for me anymore.

Exactly the same behavior for me here in Czech Republic. Yesterday morning I was able to mark road accident as “Still here” or “No more here”, but since yesterday afternoon it appears again as pre 14.5

(But reporting of new accidents was never available here)

Sounds like an accident where they released the new icon/features for accidents outside of the USA.

I really wish Apple would say something and give us a roadmap (ha!) of countries to be released next. I have this strange feeling that we aren’t going to hear anything about new releases until WWDC and that seems like a missed opportunity to me. They could get a LOT done between now and then...

So, I don’t know if this is the right thread, but it seems logical to me.

Does the Share ETA feature work for anyone? I can select it, and maps tells me I’m sharing it with the person, but the don’t get anything. Is it supposed to be an iMessage? Maps notification?
What and how is this supposed to work?

I know that if you send ETA to someone who is NOT on an iPhone, they get a regular text message with your ETA. And they get another text message when you arrive, or if your ETA drastically changes due to traffic.

If you're sending your ETA to someone on an iPhone, and they're on iOS 13 or later....I'm honestly not sure what happens. I've sent my ETA to people, who later told me that they had no idea I had done so. And no one has ever sent their ETA to me.

Also, Maps' issues with standard road abbreviations seems to be spreading. Now when I do a voice search in Apple Maps for a POI, Siri might say something like...okay, I'm drawing a blank. I can't remember what Siri normally says following a search. But she'll usually announce the location of the nearest one, and say it's on "39th Avenue". But lately, with the search result using the standard abbreviation of "39th Ave", Siri has been pronouncing Avenue as "Ahv".

You're not using the beta if I recall correctly from earlier in the thread so it can't be because of that, correct?

Correct, no betas for me. Maps wasn't doing that weeks ago, so I don't know what's up. Must be a server-side thing.

My bank just sent me an e-mail warning me *not* to update to iOS 14.5, because their mobile app isn't compatible yet. Interesting.

I have a feeling the public release is a while off, especially if you go by the build number. The most recent beta ends in an h...which is actually farther from an “a” build than we were on the beta before the current one.
