I took a long drive through New Jersey today. Couldn't help but notice that it sounded like Siri was speaking my directions a bit different today. Some of her pronunciations and spacing of words was a bit better than usual, especially in areas close to home where I'm used to her speaking certain roads or bridges a certain way.

Makes me wonder if something was updated on the server in preparation for iOS 14.5 to come out this week.

Ratings and photos added to the UK....one feature where international is way ahead of the USA.
Can’t say for certain, but I thought I heard somewhere that the countries that have the ratings and photos, are countries that Yelp doesn’t generally cover (or does, but not a lot). Not sure if that’s accurate at all, but if it IS...it could explain why the US doesn’t have this feature.

I’ve heard there are also legal reasons as well.

Not really. Yelp is not popular in hk, and crowdsourced photos and reviews are not available to hk users.

HK is also not close (as far as we know) to having Apple Map data.

The countries that have seen recent addition of photos and reviews either do or are on the short list (EU, Australia, etc) to get new Maps data.

I’m assuming Apple has to support the POI side of data to make this work properly.

just wonder any vast difference in the search algorithm between google map and apple map.

apple map gives me a feel that it still works in a traditional approach, that is requiring the street addr to look for a location, and it relies heavily on the table mapping the locations to street addr (what you guys named it POI), while google map seems work not based on street addr.

due to the reliance in poi mapping, it troubles the map integration with other native apps like contact and calendar, in which require proper street addr to locate the contact/meeting place addr. Poi does not work in both contact and calendar app.

Back to the map update progress, I am skeptical that apple would still like to update the map info and look around in hk, given the political status has been changed dramatically last year.

interestingly, I read mapking Facebook page dated 2017, it said 3D view of map for hk was available in apple map but currently not found in apple map of ios14.

I can see 3D buildings in standard view. Is it 3D satellite imagery (Flyover) you're thinking about?

attached the mapking Facebook page dated 2017 and the current map view.

note from the fb page, there was a button (next to the arrow button) to toggle 2d /3D map view in 2017, however the toggle button is now missing in the current implementation.

The 2D toggle button only appears when viewing from a 3D perspective. To access the 3D perspective, you either swipe with both fingers, or switch to satellite view, select 3D, and switch back to the map.

in the current implementation of map view, neither 2d nor 3D toggle button would appear. It would only appear in satellite view.

could you show me a screen capture of the map view of hk showing the toggle button? Like the one in the mapking Facebook.

Reminds me about how good Hong Kong looks in 3D view. It has many extremely detailed buildings because of the many shopping centres that support the indoor maps feature. It probably holds the record within that category with Singapore being the runner-up. It would certainly look amazing with Apple's own map data. Here's hoping Apple will be able to pay Hong Kong a visit in the future.

Here’s an interesting little find: the terms and conditions page for the new ratings feature doesn’t have a section for the Americas yet.

Also, here in Ireland the roll out has continued but it still doesn’t cover all types of businesses/locations. Someone said it’s rolling out first in places with little Yelp coverage, and for the record Ireland certainly fits that mark.

Big expansion of real-time public transportation data. Apple has also added indoor maps to 5 more airports. Guadeloupe also has support for turn-by-turn navigation now. Apparently lane guidance is also no longer supported in South Africa. I made a list of all the updates over on the subreddit.

Ha, and here I was lately saying it seems like they've slowed things down. This is actually pretty significant!

Of course when I was taking about slowing down, I was referring to the new area releases and Look Around. But still! This is nice to see, especially considering there might be more travel going on this year.

Siri started saying some new things during navigation for me. She was saying something like “go through this light and then turn right at the second set.” Never heard that before!

I got that too this weekend…I can’t remember exactly, but something like what you said.

I thought mine said, “Go through this light and turn right at the next one.”

So, I don’t know if this is the right thread, but it seems logical to me.

Does the Share ETA feature work for anyone? I can select it, and maps tells me I’m sharing it with the person, but the don’t get anything. Is it supposed to be an iMessage? Maps notification?
What and how is this supposed to work?

I know that if you send ETA to someone who is NOT on an iPhone, they get a regular text message with your ETA. And they get another text message when you arrive, or if your ETA drastically changes due to traffic.

If you're sending your ETA to someone on an iPhone, and they're on iOS 13 or later....I'm honestly not sure what happens. I've sent my ETA to people, who later told me that they had no idea I had done so. And no one has ever sent their ETA to me.

If you are on iOS 13+ you get a notification that the other person is sharing with you and a link to Maps where you can follow their progress. You also get periodic notifications if their ETA changes by more than about 5 minutes, more or less.

I use this frequently with family members and it works every time. My wife has sent these to me a few times as well. Also works as indicated. Hi
